Book excerpt: The aim of this work is to advance the knowledge on the behavior of fluids in porous materials. Wicking, or imbibition, is a spontaneous penetration of liquid into porous media due to capillary forces. Due to the challenges of the capillary transport of cryogenic liquids, the wicking of liquid nitrogen subjected to evaporation was of a special interest for this research. For that, a novel test facility was built to perform experiments in a one-species system under pre-defined non-isothermal conditions. Two one-dimensional macroscopic wicking models were proposed to evaluate the impact of the porous sample superheat, geometrical and structural characteristics as well as the impact of the vapor flow created due to evaporation. In the second part of this work, the capillary transport abilities of porous ceramic monoliths of anisotropic structure were studied. The polymer-derived ceramic samples fabricated with the freeze-casting method were characterized via vertical wicking tests. In the third part, the capillary transport properties of porous media and the wicking process were examined using the computational fluid dynamics software. The results of benchmark microscopic and macroscopic simulations may serve as a basis for further numerical investigations of fluid flow problems in porous media.

This book, composed of two volumes, develops fluid mechanics approaches for two immiscible fluids (water/air or water/oil) in the presence of solids (tubes, joints, grains, porous media). Their hydrodynamics are typically dominated by capillarity and viscous dissipation. This first volume presents the basic concepts and investigates two-phase equilibria, before analyzing two-phase hydrodynamics in discrete and/or statistical systems (tubular pores, planar joints). It then studies flows in heterogeneous and stratified porous media, such as soils and rocks, based on Darcy’s law. This analysis includes unsaturated flow (Richards equation) and two-phase flow (Muskat equations). Book excerpt: An experimental program was conducted to develop techniques for determining the wicking characteristics of nonrigid materials for potential use in heat pipes. The principal quantities of interest are effective pore size (to calculate a driving potential for capillary pumping of liquids) and permeability (to establish resistance to liquid flow). Compressible wicking materials do not readily lend themselves to some of the more conventional procedures used for determining flow properties as, e.g., in measuring permeability by forcing a liquid through a rigid, porous material after which flow rate and pressure drop measurements are used to calculate permeability. Consequently, other methods were investigated. Experiments were conducted with woven sleeving to determine the wicking characteristics mentioned above. Results of these tests are presented and compared with performance predicted from theory. (Author).
