Book Sweetening the Pill

Download or read book Sweetening the Pill written by Holy Grigg-Spall and published by John Hunt Publishing. This book was released on 2013-10-07 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Millions of healthy women take a powerful medication every day from their mid-teens to menopause - the Pill - but few know how this drug works or the potential side effects. Contrary to cultural myth, the birth-control pill impacts on every organ and function of the body, and yet most women do not even think of it as a drug. Depression, anxiety, paranoia, rage, panic attacks - just a few of the effects of the Pill on half of the over 80% of women who pop these tablets during their lifetimes. When the Pill was released, it was thought that women would not submit to taking a medication each day when they were not sick. Now the Pill is making women sick. However, there are a growing number of women looking for non-hormonal alternatives for preventing pregnancy. In a bid to spark the backlash against hormonal contraceptives, this book asks: Why can't we criticize the Pill? ,

Book Without Condoms

Download or read book Without Condoms written by Michael Shernoff and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-22 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After years of activism, risk awareness, and AIDS prevention, increasing numbers of gay men are not using condoms, and new infections of HIV are on the rise. Using case studies and exhaustive survey research, this timely, groundbreaking book allows men who have unprotected sex, a practice now known as "barebacking," to speak for themselves on their willingness to risk it all. Without Condoms takes a balanced look at the profound needs that are met by this seemingly reckless behavior, while at the same time exposing the role that both the Internet and club drugs like crystal methamphetamine play in facilitating high-risk sexual encounters. The result is a compassionate, sophisticated and nuanced insight into what for many people is one of the most perplexing aspects of today's gay male culture and life style. Michael Shernoff digs deep and forces us to see that the AIDS epidemic is not over. We must now ask the hard questions and listen to the voices that answer. The stakes are too high to ignore.

Book Let s Talk About Why You Don t Want to Use Condoms During Sex

Download or read book Let s Talk About Why You Don t Want to Use Condoms During Sex written by Scott Daniel Morrison and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study tests the potential benefits of addressing response costs in a fear appeal message. Response cost content acknowledges and counters drawbacks commonly associated with a proposed behavior. Response costs are not considered in the EPPM. Study participants were shown a fear appeal message from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention on sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and the effectiveness of male latex condoms in preventing STI transmission. Participants randomly assigned to the experimental case were then shown additional content addressing response costs associated with condom use, while the control group was shown a message instructing them to proceed to the next block of questions. Results of independent samples t-tests reported no significant relationship between this manipulation and intention to use male condoms during sex in the future. Meanwhile, the results of a multiple linear regression found that response costs significantly increased predictive power. Taken together, this study suggests response costs remain a useful variable when considering fear appeal development, but perceptions of response costs may not be easily manipulated.

Book Just Get on the Pill

Download or read book Just Get on the Pill written by Krystale E. Littlejohn and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2021-08-31 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The average woman concerned about pregnancy spends approximately thirty years trying to prevent conception. She largely does so alone using prescription birth control, a phenomenon often taken for granted as natural and beneficial in the United States. In Just Get on the Pill, Littlejohn draws on interviews to show how young women come to take responsibility for prescription birth control as the "woman's method" and relinquish control of external condoms as the "man's method." She uncovers how gendered compulsory birth control-in which women are held accountable for preventing and resolving pregnancies in gender-constrained ways-encroaches on women's reproductive autonomy and erodes their ability to protect themselves from disease. In tracing the gendered politics of pregnancy prevention, Littlejohn argues that the gender division of labor in birth control is not natural. It is unjust"--

  • Pages : 274 pages

Download or read book Brothel written by Alexa Albert and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2011-11-09 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What began as a public-health project by a Harvard medical student evolved into an intimate, ambitious, six-year study of the brothel ecosystem and a book that puts an unforgettable face on America’s maligned and caricatured subculture. “A fascinating glimpse into a hidden lifestyle.... It's an instantly gratifying page-turner.... It emerges as a personality-filled memoir about an unforgettable group of women." —Seattle Weekly Not a single legal prostitute in Nevada had contracted HIV since testing began in 1986. Why? Harvard medical student Alexa Albert traveled to Nevada in search of answers. Gaining unprecedented access to the infamous and notoriously secretive Mustang Ranch, Albert reveals a fascinatingly insular world where the women share their experiences with unexpected candor. There’s Dinah, Mustang’s oldest prostitute, who turned her first trick years ago at age fifty-one. And Savannah, a woman who views her work as a “healing” social service for needy men. Nevada’s legal brothels are an incredibly rich environment for examining some of this nation’s thorniest social issues. From problems of class and race to the meaning of family, honor, and justice—all are found within this complex and singular microcosm. And in a country where prejudice is a dirty word—but not as dirty as hooker—these social issues are compounded and deepened by the stifling stigma that has always plagued the profession. But in the end, all of Mustang’s working girls are just women trying to earn their way to happiness. Brothel is a landmark work that probes beyond the veil of desire and fantasy in which the sex trade shrouds itself—and uncovers the naked humanity at its core.
