Book excerpt: A call to arms by the former presidential candidate that combines personal anecdotes and cultural critiques to remind liberals of their ideological compass and restore confidence. George McGovern has been a leading figure of the Democratic Party for more than fifty years. From this true liberal comes a thoughtful examination of what being a Democrat really means. McGovern admonishes current Democratic politicians for losing sight of their ideals as they subscribe to an increasingly centrist policy agenda. Applying his wide- ranging knowledge and expertise on issues ranging from military spending to same-sex marriage to educational reform, he stresses the importance of creating policies we can be proud of. Finally, with 2012 looming, McGovern's What It Means to Be a Democrat offers a vision of the Party's future in which ideological coherence and courage rule.

Book The Parties Versus the People

Download or read book The Parties Versus the People written by Mickey Edwards and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2012-08-22 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An urgent and engaging look at how American politics have become the founding fathers’ worst nightmare” (The Daily Beast). America’s political system is dysfunctional. We know it, yet the problem seems intractable—after every election, voters discover yet again that political “leaders” are simply quarreling in a never-ending battle between the two warring tribes. As a former congressman, Mickey Edwards witnessed firsthand how important legislative battles can devolve into struggles not over principle but over party advantage. He offers graphic examples of how this problem has intensified and reveals how political battles have become nothing more than conflicts between party machines. In this critically important book, he identifies exactly how our political and governing systems reward intransigence, discourage compromise, and undermine our democracy—and describes exactly what must be done to banish the negative effects of partisan warfare from our political system and renew American democracy. “Overcoming tribalism and knee-jerk partisanship is the central challenge of our time. Mickey Edwards shows why and how in this fascinating book filled with sensible suggestions.” —Walter Isaacson, New York Times–bestselling author of Leonardo da Vinci “Many Americans, whether Democrats, Republicans, independent or otherwise, would welcome a few more like [Edwards] in office.” —The Boston Globe

Book Homegrown Democrat

Download or read book Homegrown Democrat written by Garrison Keillor and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2004-07-15 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thoughtful, deeply personal work, one of the nation's best-loved voices takes the plunge into politics and comes up with a book that has had all of America talking. Here, with great heart, supple wit, and a dash of anger, Garrison Keillor describes the simple democratic values-the Golden Rule, the obligation to defend the weak against the powerful, and others- that define his hard-working Midwestern neighbors and that today's Republicans seem determined to subvert. A reminiscence, a political tract, and a humorous meditation, Homegrown Democrat is an entertaining, refreshing addition to today's rancorous political debate. * A New York Times bestseller * Updated and revised with a new introduction for the 2006 midterm elections * A Featured Alternate Selection of the Book-of-the-Month Club

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the election of Ronald Reagan in 1980, conservatives have sought to impose an ideology upon the American people that has not intentionally, but inherently oppressed the middle class. As Newton proposed For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction, while conservative political initiatives have uplifted the so called job creators, they have naturally stepped on the middle class in order to do so. Jesus Was a Democrat illustrates how American businesses have outsourced manufacturing jobs to third-world countries, and how the destruction of privatesector collective bargaining has forced middle-class workers to accept lower wages and loss of benefi ts, creating a buyers market for todays employers. Jesus Was a Democrat shows how Republicans ignorance of the past has led to economic, military and political failure today. Dan DeFreest has crafted a book that examines how Republicans have failed to understand their own moral dichotomies and connects the dots between their oppressive ideology and todays income and wealth disparity. Using a historical perspective, he shows how conservatives have stolen the future from our middle class and brought this country to the brink of political revolution.

Book Steadfast Democrats

Download or read book Steadfast Democrats written by Ismail K. White and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-02-25 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Over the last half century, there has been a marked increase in ideological conservatism among African Americans, with nearly 50% of black Americans describing themselves as conservative in the 2000s, as compared to 10% in the 1970s. Support for redistributive initiatives has likewise declined. And yet, even as black Americans shift rightward on ideological and issue positions, Democratic Party identification has stayed remarkable steady, holding at 80% to 90%. It is this puzzle that White and Laird look to address in this new book: Why has ideological change failed to push black Americans into the Republican party? Most explanations for homogeneity have focused on individual dispositions, including ideology and group identity. White and Laird acknowledge that these are important, but point out that such explanations fail to account for continued political unity even in the face of individual ideological change and of individual incentives to defect from this common group behavior. The authors offer instead, or in addition, a behavioral explanation, arguing that black Americans maintain political unity through the establishment and enforcement of well-defined group expectations of black political behavior through a process they term racialized social constraint. The authors explain how black political norms came about, and what these norms are, then show (with the help of survey data and lab-in-field experiments) how such norms are enforced, and where this enforcement happens (through a focus on black institutions). They conclude by exploring the implications of the theory for electoral strategy, as well as explaining how this framework can be used to understand other voter communities"--

Book A Christian and a Democrat

Download or read book A Christian and a Democrat written by John F. Woolverton and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2019-08-06 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Franklin Delano Roosevelt, when asked at a press conference about the roots of his political philosophy, responded simply, “I am a Christian and a Democrat.” This is the story of how the first informed the second—how his upbringing in the Episcopal Church and matriculation at the Groton School under legendary educator and minister Endicott Peabody molded Roosevelt into a leader whose politics were fundamentally shaped by the Social Gospel. A work begun by religious historian John Woolverton (1926 2014) and recently completed by James Bratt, A Christian and a Democrat is an engaging analysis of the surprisingly spiritual life of one of the most consequential presidents in US history. Reading Woolverton’s account of FDR’s response to the toxic demagoguery of his day will reassure readers today that a constructive way forward is possible for Christians, for Americans, and for the world.

Book 8 Reasons Why I am No Longer A Democrat

Download or read book 8 Reasons Why I am No Longer A Democrat written by Dr. Glenn Pinckney Sr and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2016-11-21 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is written in this manner, size, and style to easily show the biblical relevance of our civic actions, as well as improving our daily relationship with our Lord. My utmost desire is that Born-Again Believers embrace the truth of Christ-like living, not religiously, but in reality. A reality that transcends tradition, customs, and we've-always-done-it-this-way kind of thinking. I grew up in the South where traditions and customs run deep. However, God's Word inspired me to think about many of these customs. For example, many Southern Black people, regardless of academic achievements, pronounces the word "ask" as "axe," without thinking about why. Also, many vote for Democrats their entire lives without any regard to the Democratic Party's Platform, the Candidate's stand on abortion, homosexuality, lesbianism, or any other social issues. Yet on Sundays, they will worship and praise God. Then on Tuesdays, they will vote in direct contradiction to the very God they worshipped and praised just a few days before. We simply vote as Democrats as if it's in our DNA, not giving thought to how our vote will enable the enemy of our soul to move against our beliefs, our church, even our Salvation. Is that biblically correct? Well, as Believers in Jesus, the Redeemer of mankind, our DNA has been transformed. Shouldn't we reflect that change in our daily lives as well as in our civic responses to social issues in our community and our country? It is my prayer that the reader will get answers to these and other questions that confront a child of God traveling through this journey of life with the Savior.
