Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bonds and Stocks: The Elements of Successful Investing Consols were selling at 112, or thereabouts, and they have since dropped to around 50. When we consider that practically the best investment in the world can behave in this manner, are we not some times justified in being sceptical in regard to the securities which are being offered at the present day? The British Consols are not the only securities, of course, which have shown this decline, since practically all the conservative bonds have dropped in a similar manner. The cause of this great decline is that the investing public seeks securities which pay a greater income than 3 and The field which has naturally opened up to them is that of Public Utilities which, a few years ago, were considered anything but conservative. There are many securities of electric railways, lighting, telephone, industrial, and water power properties which today form a very desirable form of invest ment. One, however, must be thoroughly informed on the fundamental principles underlying the secu rity of these newer issues, as well as other classes of investments, before making any purchases. Book Why Bonds Are Safe Investments

Download or read book Why Bonds Are Safe Investments written by Harris Trust Savings Bank and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Why Bonds Are Safe Investments The average person perhaps does not realize to what an extent he is now indirectly investing in bonds, and enjoying the advantages which bonds have made possible. The insurance company in which he, his family or his property is insured invests its funds largely in bonds. So very likely to a considerable degree does the bank in which he deposits his money. The school where he sends his children has probably been built from the proceeds of a bond issue, as have many of the other public improvements of his community, the local electric light plant, the waterworks, the railroads which developed the country nearby, the trolley lines on which he rides, etc. Many of the greatest conveniences of the present day would have been impossible if bonds had not been considered safe investments by a very large number of people. It is the purpose of this pamphlet to explain the elements of safety which have made this class of securities so popular with careful investors. Certain details of the handling, however, are the result of a series of discussions of the subject before the bond salesmen of The Equitable Trust Company of New York, serving to focus attention upon points as to which information is particularly desired at the present time, on the part alike of investors and of those engaged in the bond business. The author wishes to express his appreciation of the encouragement and assistance rendered by Mr. Morris K. Parker, in charge of the Bond Department of The Equitable Trust Company and the members of his staff. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Investment Bonds

Download or read book Investment Bonds written by Frederick Lownhaupt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Investment Bonds: Their Issue and Their Place in Finance, a Book for Students, Investors, and Practical Financiers Some months past a prominent banker of this city delivered an address touching largely on Investment Bonds, in the course of which he was requested to mention a work devoted entirely to that subject. The reply was that he knew of no book of this nature and he believed that none existed; and a review of current financial literature confirmed this belief. That inci dent, together with numerous similar inquiries that have come to the attention of the author, is responsible for the present volume. Nearly every other branch of finance has received an adequate measure cf attention. There are for instance, fully a score of good works on the various aspects of banking and on kindred subjects. It is a singular fact, however, that Investment Bonds, taken as a separate subject, have had scant consideration. The published information at present available on the subject is scarcely more than passing mention in some financial works, one or two small volumes which are little else than reference works, and the advertising pamphlets of banking houses. This material is so scattered as to preclude the possibility of obtaining from it any satisfactory amount of trustworthy in formation. Only a few, comparatively, such as those whose daily association with this branch of finance affords them opportunity for its study, are in a position to learn of its many phases. Book The A B C of Bond Buying

Download or read book The A B C of Bond Buying written by G. C. Selden and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The A B C of Bond Buying: How the Ordinary Judge Bond Values The principal object of these chapters is to aid the average investor in getting a working knowledge of the principles of bond buying which will be a practical help to him in making his investments. At the same time a number of points are brought out which are not without an element of novelty. They have occurred to other students of the subject but have not been emphasized and in some instances have not previously found their way into print. In order to make the book as comprehensive as possible some chapters have been very much condensed but it is believed that they will be easily intelligible to the careful reader. Generally speaking, the book is based more on the writer's actual experience in dealing with investors than upon the researches of other students of the subject. Excerpt: ...of results may as well leave these bonds which have an extra high current income to other investors who place exceptional weight on that point. The bonds having a low current annual income but a higher yield according to the bond tables are more to his advantage in the end. Or, to come at the matter from the opposite direction, bonds paying a low rate of interest are likely to be a better bargain than bonds paying a high rate of interest but showing the same yield. A 4% bond yielding 6% is likely, other things being equal, to be a better bond than a bond yielding 6%. A 4% bond yielding 6% is probably entitled to as good an investment rating as a 6% bond yielding 5.75% or even less. The investor will of course bear in mind that this is only one element in bond values. I have discussed it rather fully because it has heretofore been neglected. Especially, the reluctance of many investors to buy bonds selling considerably above par sometimes has an influence directly opposite to that here discussed. Effect of Taxation on Bond Values The state of affairs in regard to the taxation of bonds, considering the country as a whole, can only be described as a disgraceful mess. In nearly all states bonds are considered as intangible personal property and as such are subject to_ the regular personal property tax, which is sometimes so high that it becomes an important factor. But many owners of bonds have a way of forgetting that bonds are personal property when the tax assessor comes around--in fact, there are very few subjects in regard to which memory is more treacherous. It is also to be borne in mind that the rate per cent. of the personal property tax in any locality, when taken alone, does not tell what the taxes are. The rate of assessment is...
