Book WHOI Cable V2 0

Download or read book WHOI Cable V2 0 written by Jason I. Gobat and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes version 2.0 of a numerical program for analyzing the statics and dynamics of cable structures commonly encountered in oceanographic engineering practice. The numerical program, WHOI Cable, features a nonlinear solver that includes the effects of geometric and material nonlinearities, bending stiffness for seamless modeling of slack cables, and a model for the interaction of cable segments with the seafloor. The program solves both surface and subsurface single- and multi-point mooring problems, systems with both ends anchored on the bottom, and towing and drifter problems. Forcing includes waves, current, wind, ship speed, and pay-out of cable. The programs that make-up WHOI Cable run under Unix and Windows. There is a familiar graphical interface available for Windows platforms. The report includes detailed instructions for formulating problem input files and running the programs.

Book WHOI Cable Time Domain Numerical Simulation of Moored and Towed Oceanographic Systems

Download or read book WHOI Cable Time Domain Numerical Simulation of Moored and Towed Oceanographic Systems written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents a numerical framework for analyzing the statics and dynamics of cable structures commonly encountered in oceanographic engineering practice. The numerical program, WHOI Cable, features a nonlinear solver that includes the effects of geometric and material nonlinearities, bending stiffness for seamless modeling of slack cables, and a model for the interaction of cable segments with the seafloor. The program solves both surface and subsurface single-point mooring problems, systems with both ends anchored on the bottom, and towing and drifter problems. Forcing includes waves, current, ship speed, and pay-out of cable. The programs that make-up WHOI Cable run under Unix, DOS, and Windows. There is a familiar Windows style interface available for Windows 95 and Windows NT platforms. In the report, the mathematical and numerical framework for WHOI Cable is described, followed by detailed instructions for formulating problem input files and running the codes. Examples are included in an appendix to highlight the range of problems that WHOI Cable can solve.

Book SecNav

Download or read book SecNav written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the summer of 2002, six surface moorings and one subsurface mooring were deployed south of Martha's Vineyard, Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The moorings were deployed from June to September 2002 to collect meteorological and oceanographic data This was done both to support the Coupled Boundary Layer Air-Sea Transfer Low wind (CBLAST-Low) cooperative experiment and to address the question of regional predictability in the littoral regime under research supported by a Secretary of the Navy/Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Chair. The aim was to capture the mesoscale development and response of inner shelf waters to local synoptic atmospheric, tidal and larger scale oceanic forcing under predominantly low wind conditions. This report covers the operational aspects of the 2002 experiment, including deployment, recovery, and mooring setups, as well as basic data returns.

Book Introduction to Geophysical Fluid Dynamics

Download or read book Introduction to Geophysical Fluid Dynamics written by Benoit Cushman-Roisin and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2011-08-26 with total page 850 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to Geophysical Fluid Dynamics provides an introductory-level exploration of geophysical fluid dynamics (GFD), the principles governing air and water flows on large terrestrial scales. Physical principles are illustrated with the aid of the simplest existing models, and the computer methods are shown in juxtaposition with the equations to which they apply. It explores contemporary topics of climate dynamics and equatorial dynamics, including the Greenhouse Effect, global warming, and the El Nino Southern Oscillation. - Combines both physical and numerical aspects of geophysical fluid dynamics into a single affordable volume - Explores contemporary topics such as the Greenhouse Effect, global warming and the El Nino Southern Oscillation - Biographical and historical notes at the ends of chapters trace the intellectual development of the field - Recipient of the 2010 Wernaers Prize, awarded each year by the National Fund for Scientific Research of Belgium (FNR-FNRS)

Book Methods of Seawater Analysis

Download or read book Methods of Seawater Analysis written by Klaus Grasshoff and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-07-30 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the book first appeared in 1976, Methods of Seawater Analysis has found widespread acceptance as a reliable and detailed source of information. Its second extended and revised edition published in 1983 reflected the rapid pace of instrumental and methodological evolution in the preceding years. The development has lost nothing of its momentum, and many methods and procedures still suffering their teething troubles then have now matured into dependable tools for the analyst. This is especially evident for trace and ultra-trace analyses of organic and inorganic seawater constituents which have diversified considerably and now require more space for their description than before. Methods to determine volatile halocarbons, dimethyl sulphide, photosynthetic pigments and natural radioactive tracers have been added as well as applications of X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and various electrochemical methods for trace metal analysis. Another method not previously described deals with the determination of the partial pressure of carbon dioxide as part of standardised procedures to describe the marine CO2 system.

Book Ocean Circulation and Climate

Download or read book Ocean Circulation and Climate written by Carl Wunsch and published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The World Ocean Circulation Experiment drove the development of estimates of the decadal scale time evolving general circulation that are dynamically and kinematically consistent. A long timescale, and a goal of estimation rather than prediction, preclude the use of meteorological methods called “data assimilation (DA).” Instead, “state estimation” methods are reviewed here and distinguished from DA. Results from the dynamically consistent family of solutions from the project Estimating the Circulation and Climate of the Ocean based upon least-squares Lagrange multipliers (adjoints) are used to discuss the determination of the dominant elements of the circulation in the period since 1992—which marked the beginning of the satellite altimetric record. Significant changes documented in the Arctic in recent decades now mandate consideration of the coupled ocean-cryospheric state.
