Download or read book Who s Who in American Sports Classic Reprint written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-14 with total page 982 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Who's Who in American Sports Sports editors, college and high school coaches athletic directors, alumni secretaries, in fact a veritable army Of well-wishers and helpers, as well as the entire staff Of the National Biographical Society set to work in the early summer Of 1927 to compile a list Of eligibles for this publication. At that time there were no available records suitable for presentation. More than names were collected, arranged and classified. Questionnaires were sent to all of these, and over responded with partial or complete data. After careful consideration sketches were approved for inclu sion in this volume. The publishers realize that many sketches worthy Of this distinction have been omitted. This is by no means an oversight, as it has been exceedingly difficult to trace and contact a large number who are not only eligible, but who are among the outstanding athletes Of the nation. In a few instances we have given pictorial recognition without the accompanying sketches. As rapidly as these men and women can be reached, their names and records will be filed for future editions. Book The Great American Sports Page A Century of Classic Columns from Ring Lardner to Sally Jenkins

Download or read book The Great American Sports Page A Century of Classic Columns from Ring Lardner to Sally Jenkins written by John Schulian and published by Library of America. This book was released on 2019-04-30 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A first-of-its-kind celebration of the newspaper scribes who made sportswriting a glorious popular art, and immortalized America's greatest games and athletes Spanning nearly a century, The Great American Sports Page presents essential columns from more than three dozen masters of the press-box craft. These unforgettable dispatches from World Series, Super Bowls, and title bouts for the ages were written on deadline with passion, spontaneity, humor, and a gift for the memorable phrase. Read avidly day in and day out by a sports-mad public, these columnists became journalistic celebrities in their home cities, their coverage trusted and savored, their opinions hotly debated. Some even helped change the games they wrote about. Gathered here in a groundbreaking anthology, their writings capture some of sport's most enduring moments and many of its all-time greats: Babe Ruth, Jackie Robinson, Muhammad Ali, and Michael Jordan among them. But the best American sportswriters also found ways to write powerfully about lesser-known athletes and to convey, often with heartbreaking honesty and insight, the less glamorous and more tragic facets of the games we love. In its survey of the finest American sportswriting from Ring Lardner to Thomas Boswell, from Red Smith and Jimmy Cannon to Bob Ryan and Michael Wilbon, The Great American Sports Page takes the measure of the human richness, complexity, and competitive spirit of sports and the athletes who continue to fascinate and inspire us.

Book The Sports and Pastimes of American Boys

Download or read book The Sports and Pastimes of American Boys written by Henry Chadwick and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sports and Pastimes of American Boys: A Guide and d104-Book of Games of the Play-Ground, the Parlor, and the Field, Adapted Especially for American Youth OW that the spirit of the age favors the plan of a judicious combination of physical recreation with mental culture, it is timely to prepare a text-book of sports and pastimes for boys, which will best tend to promote this system of paying due attention to physical as well as mental education. An old writer says, Let me make the songs of a people, and I care not who makes their laws. This rule is as applicable to the structure of the sports of a people as it is to the com position of their songs. The pastimes of boys of all nations partake largely of the peculiar character of the people whose youth engage in them. The boys of a war like nation find their chief recreation in sports in which feats of brutal courage, and of endurance of fatigue and pain, are marked characteristics. On the other hand, the youths of a peaceful people enjoy those pastimes best which most com pare in their character with the national life of their progenitors. Differences in climate necessarily have their relation to the character of national sports but it is more in the essential character of the people themselves that their national pastimes differ, and this is especially noticeable in the receative sports of boys. It is in this respect that the games of American boyhood are different, as a rule, from those of English youths. Of course, there is a certain degree of similarity in most of them, arising from their English origin but there is scarcely an imported game that is at all open to improvement, which has not of late years been essentially Americanized witness the evolution of our manly national game of base-ball from the old English schoolboy game of Rounders. Book The Revolt of the Black Athlete

Download or read book The Revolt of the Black Athlete written by Harry Edwards and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2017-05-02 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Revolt of the Black Athlete hit sport and society like an Ali combination. This Fiftieth Anniversary edition of Harry Edwards's classic of activist scholarship arrives even as a new generation engages with the issues he explored. Edwards's new introduction and afterword revisit the revolts by athletes like Muhammad Ali, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Tommie Smith, and John Carlos. At the same time, he engages with the struggles of a present still rife with racism, double-standards, and economic injustice. Again relating the rebellion of black athletes to a larger spirit of revolt among black citizens, Edwards moves his story forward to our era of protests, boycotts, and the dramatic politicization of athletes by Black Lives Matter. Incisive yet ultimately hopeful, The Revolt of the Black Athlete is the still-essential study of the conflicts at the interface of sport, race, and society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Richter's History and Records of Base Ball: The American Nation's Chief Sport Without boast or apology is laid before the base ball-loving public of America, by the undersigned, Founder and Editor of Sporting Life, the oldest and best organ of the great sport of Base Ball, this History and Records of Base Ball. This volume is designed to supply the growing need of a concise, yet complete, record of our National Game, from its remote inception and humble beginning to the present period of magnificent develop ment to real national stature. It is also designed to serve this purpose in such form as to make it valuable, possibly indispensa ble, as a book of special information, of ready reference, and of general interest to all lovers and students of the great game. This book is also designed to preserve in compact form the invaluable playing records of the sport, heretofore so scattered and so neglected that they were in danger of becoming obscured, reduced to mere tradition, or lost altogether. From this stand point this History and Records of Base Ball I believe to be necessary, timely, and unique; and it is therefore submitted with out apology. Of the merit of my work I make no boast, leaving the reader to judge that; and no further comment than to state that if it meets with public approval I shall feel deeply grateful, as well as amply rewarded for what has been to me a labor of love for, and devotion to, a sport to which I have given the willing service of a lifetime. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cabinet of Natural History and American Rural Sports, Vol. 3 If we examine the Opinions of men on this subject, we see at once how deeply wrong impressions have become rooted by pondering over the fictitious histories of the Beaver, - or more particularly being influenced, in early youth, by the fabulous stories of the animal, framed as truth, and admitted into the various seminaries of learn ing. Here we find the Beaver placed at the head of all inferior creatures for sagacity and intelligence, and eu dowed with intellectual qualities superior to many nations or tribes of human beings. This undoubtedly is error, and to overturn it must be the work of time and truth, by the introduction, into schools and families, of authentic histories of the animal. It is, however, no trifling undertaking, to establish truth on prejudicial error, or. Attack the writings of the learned and eloquent, which have filled the world With theories or false statements, wrought up by ingenuity to almost sublimity.
