Book The Most Outrageous Alligator Poachers

Download or read book The Most Outrageous Alligator Poachers written by Barbara Tyner Hall and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2021-02-15 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is going to take you deep into the heart of the Everglades before it became a national park. This journey will give you a great insight into how the laws of the land changed and how it affected the people of the area. This story is plunging deep into the swamplands whose people learned to live off the land as a way to survive in this harsh terrain. Many are commercial fishermen and stone crabbers, and as the I was from the area, it took me a year or so before I learned that they were ex-moonshiners, and their fathers were plume hunters. The best guides in the area are, in fact, the best alligator poachers and hunters known to this area, and the best of all is known to be the men depicted in this story. Behind all the complicated waterways, there is a root system like no other just like a brain of a computer, and behind that is a maze of rivers that are some of the most complicated known to man. People have lost their lives trying to maneuver through the shallow waterways. The new park rangers that were now assigned to this area had to appeal to the local fisherman to show them how to get out if Chokoloskee Bay and a few other waterways so they could patrol the area and return safely that evening to their families. Most of the families and early settlers were related to each other and would clan up like the Indians and did not like outsiders. When the information that was provided to the first park rangers were not at all accurate, the locals, as well as Peg Brown and his friends, enjoyed toying with the rangers as much as possible. They would lay out some routes for the park rangers to follow, and let’s just say there were always some significant points missing. With that the temperament of the poachers grew more mischievous than ever, which led the authorities on highly action-packed chases and exciting adventures and escapades throughout the dangerous maze of the Ten Thousand Islands. Everglades natives believe that the animals in the national park belong to them, and they should be allowed to use animals as they saw fit, much of the same way a developing nation controls its oil. The local people were not all that upset about the widespread killings of the alligators. Most alligators were a nuisances, but they believed in the hidden supply theory, which was said that an unlimited supply of alligators would always emerge from the swamps to replace the ones that were poached and made into shoes, belts, and purses for some of the wealthiest people who could afford to buy them.

Book excerpt: Claude is the story of the California Academy of Sciences' beloved albino alligator, from his birth in Louisiana to his present day life in his swamp at the Academy. "Ultimately, Claude’s hopeful tale is a celebration of individuality and the joy in finding those who appreciate you for exactly who you are."--Booklist Claude is a celebrity alligator and the mascot for San Francisco's California Academy of Sciences. His story started almost 25 years ago in Louisiana, where he hatched out of his egg to discover he looked different from the other hatchlings. They were green and Claude was white. The other hatchings avoided him, and his color made him vulnerable to predators. So Claude went to a special zoo that cared for alligators where he lived in a pen by himself. Now he was safe--but alone. One day, scientists at the California Academy of Sciences heard about him and asked the zoo if he could come and live in the Academy's swamp. He made a 2,800 mile journey to his new home, where he had a surprise--he would share his swamp with Bonnie, an alligator who the scientists hoped would be a friend for Claude. Unfortunately, Bonnie didn't like Claude's differences either, so she was moved to another home. But then Claude was alone again--or was he? With Bonnie gone, Claude began to interact with the five enormous snapping turtles who shared his swamp. The turtles didn't mind at all that Claude was different! And neither do the millions of people who visit him every year. They know that Claude's differences are exactly what makes him special. Claude includes back matter with answers to frequently asked questions about the famous alligator, including information about albinism in animals.

Download or read book America s Alligator written by Doug Alderson and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-04-01 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People have long been fascinated by the American alligator. Ever since humans arrived on the continent more than 15,000 years ago, the American alligator has been both feared and revered, celebrated and scorned, and often hunted for food and hide. Once tourism began to take hold in the South as a real industry, especially in Florida, the alligator took on iconic and even mythical status. “One of the most picturesque features of Florida has always been that uncouth and fierce-looking reptile called the alligator,” wrote Nevin O. Winter in 1918. “Everybody who comes down here to the peninsula has an ambition to see one in the wild.” Seminole Indians wrestled alligators for show. Alligator souvenirs and mascots often took what people feared—a sharp-toothed predator—and made it into something cute and cuddly. Alligator-themed songs were recorded and released, including “See You Later Alligator” by Bill Haley and His Comets. Hollywood into created alligator-themed movies such as Alligator People. Alligators were also reportedly kept in the White House under two presidencies. And perhaps the most unusual alligator story was one that helped to nab Ma Barker and her son Fred when they were hiding out along Florida’s Lake Weir. America’s Alligator examines the colorful and sometimes conflicted relationship our species has had with Alligator mississippiensis. Doug Alderson explores the country’s rich alligator mythology and how it inspired various forms of art, stories, photography, tourism and even humor.
