Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Keeping the stories relating to childhood sexual abuse and violence secret within families seems core to the traumatic effect such abuse has on the lives of not just the person who has been abused, but also on their children and even their children’s children. This book demonstrates the uses of narrative practices both as a means to explore, through a collaborative research process, the effect of this traumatic legacy within families, and also the use of narrative as a dynamic therapeutic process which finds creative ways for people to break through the silence and live beyond being defined by abuse and violence. The contributors to this volume range in age, background and experience, but are linked through the common theme of inter and transgenerational trauma.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These poems sketch the rainbow colors of life as I see them. To some people, life is a cycle of events that are depicted by an array of emotions. To me, life is like a rainbow. This rainbow is composed of several colors very similar to any rainbow. Yet this rainbow is representative of human life, which is ever influenced by the meaningful events that color our days. Ive divided my book into four basic colors that reflect upon emotional reactions to everyday events. These colors are: yellow, which represents the bold and dynamic events that might reflect happiness. blue, which represents the mysterious and dreamy periods in our lives. gray, which represents the lonely, depressing feelings possessed by each of us at one time or another in our daily existence. red, which represents deep passion and love, emotions that are necessary for all living beings in order to thrive and grow from day to day. You are about to experience some of my personal perceptions of these periods in our lives and the emotions and feelings connected with them. The philosopher who coined the ironic phrase There is no substitute for experience has certainly shared many of these emotions and feelings. Perhaps you will relate to some of these all-too-familiar feelings and emotions while reading these poems.
Download or read book Elia Kazan A Life written by Elia Kazan and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2011-10-16 with total page 1387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ONE OF THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER'S 100 GREATEST FILM BOOKS OF ALL TIME • In this amazing autobiography, Kazan at seventy-eight brings us the undiluted telling of his story—and revelation of himself—all the passion, vitality, and truth, the almost outrageous honesty, that have made him so formidable a stage director (A Streetcar Named Desire, Death of a Salesman, All My Sons, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Tea and Sympathy), film director (On the Waterfront, East of Eden, Gentleman’s Agreement, Splendor in the Grass, Baby Doll, The Last Tycoon, A Face in the Crowd), and novelist (the number-one best-seller The Arrangement.) “This is the best autobiography I’ve read by a prominent American in I don’t know how many years. It is endlessly absorbing and I believe this is because it concerns a man who is looking to find a coherent philosophy that will be tough enough to contain all that is ugly in his person and his experience, yet shall prove sufficiently compassionate to give honest judgment on himself and others. Somehow, the author brings this off. Elia Kazan: A Life has that candor of confession which is possible only when the deepest wounds have healed and honesty can achieve what honesty so rarely arrives at—a rich and hearty flavor. By such means, a famous director has written a book that offers the kind of human wealth we find in a major novel.” —Norman Mailer Kazan gives us his sense of himself as an outsider (a Greek rug merchant’s son born in Turkey, an immigrant’s son raised in New York and educated at Williams College). He takes us into the almost accidental sojourn at the Yale Drama School that triggered his commitment to theatre, and his edgy, exciting apprenticeship with the new and astonishing Group Theatre, as stagehand and stage manager—and as actor (Waiting for Lefty, Golden Boy) . . . his first nervous and then successful attempts at directing for theatre and movies (The Skin of Our Teeth, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn) . . . his return to New York to co-found the Actors Studio (and his long and ambivalent relationship with Lee Strasberg) . . . his emergence as premier director on both coasts. With his director’s eye for the telling scene, Kazan shares the joys and complications of production, his unique insights on acting, directing, and producing. He makes us feel the close presence of the actors, producers, and writers he’s worked with—James Dean, Marlon Brando, Tennessee Williams, Vivien Leigh, Tallulah Bankhead, Sam Spiegel, Darryl Zanuck, Harold Clurman, Arthur Miller, Budd Schulberg, James Baldwin, Clifford Odets, and John Steinbeck among them. He gives us a frank and affectionate portrait of Marilyn Monroe. He talks with startling candor about himself as husband and—in the years where he obsessively sought adventure outside marriage—as lover. For the first time, he discusses his Communist Party years and his wrenching decision in 1952 to be a cooperative witness before HUAC. He writes about his birth as a writer. The pace and organic drama of his narrative, his grasp of the life and politics of Broadway and Hollywood, the keenness with which he observes the men and women and worlds around him, and, above all, the honest with which he pursues and captures his own essence, make this one of the most fascinating autobiographies of our time.

Download or read book Grandmother s Secrets written by Rosina-Fawzia al-Rawi and published by Interlink Publishing. This book was released on 2012-11-15 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Come, sit by me," says Grandmother. "Take this chalk in your hand. Now draw a dot and concentrate all your energy into this one dot. It is the beginning and the end, the navel of the world." So Fawzia Al-Rawi describes her grandmother's first lesson about the ancient craft of Oriental dance. Grandmother's Secretsalways circles back to this grandmother and this young girl, echoing the circular movements of the dance itself. Al-Rawi has written a strikingly graceful and original book that blends personal memoir with the history and theory of the dance known in the West as "belly dancing." It is the story of a young Arab girl as she is initiated into womanhood. It is a history of the dance from the earliest times through the days of the Pharaohs, the Roman Empire, to the Arab world of the last three centuries. It is a personal investigation into the effects of the dance's movements on individual parts of the body and the whole psyche. It is a guide to the actual techniques of the dance for those who are inspired to put down the book and move. Al-Rawi conveys in this book not only the history and technique of grieving and mourning dances, pregnancy and birth dances, but the spirit of these age-old rituals, and their possibilities for healing and empowering women today.
Download or read book Unconventional Wisdom written by June Boyce-Tillman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early Christianity saw women in positions of authority and a fluid theology that included feminine figures in the notion of the Divine. However, for centuries a male trinity has dominated theology with the characteristics of triumphalism, clarity, order, eternality and unity. Unconventional Wisdom examines the attempt within the last half of the twentieth century to unearth the hidden theological tradition of feminine Wisdom. The book presents the work of influential theorists, notably Foucault, Belenky and Dorothy Smith. The recovery of the feminine in the divine is linked with the rediscovery of subjugated value systems and what this might mean for ecclesiology.
