Book Composing Research

Download or read book Composing Research written by Cindy Johanek and published by . This book was released on 2000-04 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cindy Johanek offers a new perspective on the ideological conflict between qualitative and quantitative research approaches, and the theories of knowledge that inform them. With a paradigm that is sensitive to the context of one's research questions, she argues, scholars can develop less dichotomous forms that invoke the strengths of both research traditions. Context-oriented approaches can lift the narrative from beneath the numbers in an experimental study, for example, or bring the useful clarity of numbers to an ethnographic study. A pragmatic scholar, Johanek moves easily across the boundaries that divide the field, and argues for contextualist theory as a lens through which to view composition research. This approach brings with it a new focus, she writes. "This new focus will call us to attend to the contexts in which rhetorical issues and research issues converge, producing varied forms, many voices, and new knowledge, indeed reconstructing a discipline that will be simultaneously focused on its tasks, its knowledge-makers, and its students." Composing Research is a work full of personal voice and professional commitment and will be a welcome addition to the research methods classroom and to the composition researcher's own bookshelf. 2000 Outstanding Scholarship Award from the International Writing Centers Association.

Book Research on Written Composition

Download or read book Research on Written Composition written by George Hillocks (Jr.) and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reflecting changes in the focus and methodology of writing research over the past 20 years, this book provides a meta-analysis of studies on teaching approaches and focuses on composition instruction at the elementary, secondary, and college levels. The first chapter of the book examines general studies of the composing process, studies of process in classrooms, and studies of planning, production factors, revision, and writing apprehension. Summaries of the limitations and key findings of the research on process are included. The second chapter explores research on the repertoire of lexical, syntactic, or rhetorical forms which writers call upon in their writing. The third chapter examines criticisms of experimental studies and the difficulties in doing them, then explains the techniques used in the meta-analysis of such studies, the selection of studies, and the variables examined. The next four chapters analyze the studies in the areas of modes of instruction, grammar and the manipulation of syntax, criteria for better writing, and invention. The eighth chapter presents the results of the meta-analysis for the dimensions examined: grade level, duration of treatment, mode of instruction, focus of instruction, revision, and feedback. The final chapter discusses the compatibility of results of treatment or method studies with those of processes studies, and offers recommendations for future research. (HTH)

Book English Grammar for Today

Download or read book English Grammar for Today written by Geoffrey Leech and published by Palgrave. This book was released on 2005-10-28 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by a team led by a world authority in English grammar, English Grammar for Today has established itself as a rich educational experience for both native- and non-native-speaking students. This engaging and stimulating coursebook enables students to learn grammar not just for its own sake, but also for the pleasure of exploring, appreciating and understanding the way language communicates in written text and spoken discourse. Throughout, the emphasis is on using grammar in present-day English. After an introduction placing grammar in its educational and cultural context, the authors present a 'toolkit' for analysing sentences. The second part of the book demonstrates how to apply this toolkit to spoken and written language, using a wide range of real textual materials. Each chapter ends with a set of carefully-designed exercises and tasks to aid understanding, with answers provided at the end of the volume. Now thoroughly revised and updated to meet the needs of today's students, this new edition features: - a new Foreword by the English Association - an additional introductory chapter, 'Getting Started with Grammar', which introduces the subject for those with no prior knowledge - improved and extended diagrams, exercises and answers - up-to-date textual passages and examples Lively and approachable, this indispensable guide is ideal for both students and teachers who are looking for their first serious engagement with - or wishing to rediscover- English grammar.
