Book Foundations of Russian Military Flight 1885 1925

Download or read book Foundations of Russian Military Flight 1885 1925 written by James K Libbey and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2019-05-15 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foundations of Russian Military Flight focuses on the early use of balloons and aircraft by the Russian military. The best early Russian aircraft included flying boats designed by Dimitrii Grigorovich and large reconnaissance-bombers created by Igor Sikorsky. As World War I began, the Imperial Russian Navy made use of aircraft more quickly than the army. Indeed, the navy established a precursor to the aircraft carrier. The Imperial Russian Army came to respect over time the work of aircraft that evolved from reconnaissance and bomber to fighter planes. Over 250 army pilots during the war received awards of high distinction for their wartime flights. After the 1917 revolution, both the new Bolshevik government and the reactionary White forces created air arms to combat each other. In the 1920s, the Soviet Union and Germany negotiated agreements that allowed Germany to violate the Treaty of Versailles by building military aircraft and training German military pilots in the USSR. This provided the Soviet Union access to the latest aviation technology and prevented them from falling too far behind the West in this crucial sphere.

Book Aircraft Fatigue Management

Download or read book Aircraft Fatigue Management written by Lorrie Molent and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2024-01-23 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue occurs under cyclic loading and can significantly degrade the operational capability and safety of metallic aircraft components and structures. This book provides summaries of some metallic aircraft structural integrity issues, innovative but established examples of maintaining operational capability—airworthiness, and assessments of safe in-service fatigue lives. These topics are based on a through-life fatigue management philosophy that ensures safe and continued operation, including during life extensions that are almost inevitably required. This philosophy is underpinned by observations of the behaviour of fatigue cracks in actual structures subjected to realistic service loading conditions. The book includes topics like aircraft design requirements, individual aircraft fatigue loads monitoring, airframe fatigue testing, sources of fatigue-nucleating discontinuities, and prediction of fatigue crack growth from these discontinuities. All these aspects contribute to discussing methods of assuring the structural integrity and operational capability of realistically cracked structures. The book also discusses the exponential behaviour of lead or dominant cracks—those leading to first failure—and the practical significance of differences between fatigue fracture topographies produced under constant amplitude and variable amplitude loading. The book can be a valuable reference for researchers and professionals interested in aircraft fatigue management and allied fields.

Book Taking Flight

Download or read book Taking Flight written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1997-03-14 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The commercial aviation industry is a major part of the U.S. transportation infrastructure and a key contributor to the nation's economy. The industry is facing the effects of a reduced role by the military as a source of high-quality trained personnel, particularly pilots and mechanics. At the same time, it is facing the challenges of a changing American workforce. This book is a study of the civilian training and education programs needed to satisfy the work-force requirements of the commercial aviation industry in the year 2000 and beyond, with particular emphasis on issues related to access to aviation careers by women and minorities.

This book takes that comparison seriously and examines process theology's claim to do better than classical theism. Jakeman tells the story of the people and events behind the establishment of the segregated flight training program at Tuskegee. He begins by recounting Tuskegee Institute's first tentative efforts to enter the field of aviation during the mid 1930s and concludes with the graduation of the first class of black pilots in early 1942.
