Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pig N Whistle restaurants operated from 1908 to 1968 at more than 40 locations on the West Coast, from Los Angeles to Seattle. These elegant lunch rooms in San Francisco, Oakland, Beverly Hills, Pasadena, and elsewhere were born out of the great 1906 San Francisco Earthquake when hotelier John H. Gage left Hotel America and the rubble on Market Street to make a fresh start. He opened a soda fountain next door to Los Angeles City Hall in 1908 and soon returned to San Francisco to open a second in the newly rebuilt White House Department Store. Dutch immigrant Sidney Hoedemaker became the chains president, and under his direction, Pig N Whistle added Melody Lane, one of the first L.A. restaurants to open a cocktail bar, a development mirrored in the Hollywood film noir classic, Mildred Pierce.Restaurateur Chris Breed and partner Alain Hajjar reinvigorated the memory of the Egyptian Theatre Pig N Whistle by reestablishing the classic franchise in 2001 on Hollywood Boulevard.

Book excerpt: I shall tell you a story—it is the tale of a journey. Gather round, young and old, for the moving and amusing tale of Adam, a most curious and unique little whistle-pig. Adam is different from the rest of his group from birth. Those in the Whistle-pig Clan do not think deep thoughts. They do not laugh. They cannot even smile! But Adam does these things. Adam plays when the others do not. He explores where the others do not. He protects when others will not. And for all his differences, he is shunned from the group and finds a home, alone, a short distance away from where he grew up. Adam is mostly pleased with his solitary life, but he can't help longing for someone to share his thoughts with. A prisoner in his own mind, he sometimes finds it easy to make a bad choice. But, as he is different than any other whistle-pig, he begins to feel emotions that whistle-pigs and others in the animal kingdom do not feel. These emotions leave him conflicted, until the arrival of Agnus, a strangely kind two leg. A story of redemption and hope, The Awakening of Adam is an allegorical treasure that will inspire your heart and touch your spirit.

Book The Impossible

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mark Jago
  • Publisher : OUP Oxford
  • Release : 2014-04-24
  • ISBN : 0191019151
  • Pages : 306 pages

Download or read book The Impossible written by Mark Jago and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-04-24 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mark Jago presents an original philosophical account of meaningful thought: in particular, how it is meaningful to think about things that are impossible. We think about impossible things all the time. We can think about alchemists trying to turn base metal to gold, and about unfortunate mathematicians trying to square the circle. We may ponder whether god exists; and philosophers frequently debate whether properties, numbers, sets, moral and aesthetic qualities, and qualia exist. In many philosophical or mathematical debates, when one side of the argument gets things wrong, it necessarily gets them wrong. As we consider both sides of one of these philosophical arguments, we will at some point think about something that's impossible. Yet most philosophical accounts of meaning and content hold that we can't meaningfully think or reason about the impossible. In The Impossible, Jago argues that we often gain new information, new beliefs and, sometimes, fresh knowledge through logic, mathematics and philosophy. That is why logic, mathematics, and philosophy are useful. We therefore require accounts of knowledge and belief, of information and content, and of meaning which allow space for the impossible. Jago's aim in this book is to provide such accounts. He gives a detailed analysis of the concept of hyperintensionality, whereby logically equivalent contents may be distinct, and develops a theory in terms of possible and impossible worlds. Along the way, he provides a theory of what those worlds are and how they feature in our analysis of normative epistemic concepts: knowledge, belief, information, and content.

Book Sacred and Mythological Animals

Download or read book Sacred and Mythological Animals written by Yowann Byghan and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2020-03-11 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the household cat to horses that can fly, a surprisingly wide range of animals feature in religions and mythologies all across the world. The same animal can take on different roles: the raven can be a symbol of evil, a harbinger of death, a wise messenger or a shape-changing trickster. In Norse mythology, Odin's magical ravens perch on his shoulders and bring him news. This compendium draws upon religious texts and myths to explore the ways sacred traditions use animal images, themes and associations in rituals, ceremonies, texts, myths, literature and folklore across the world. Sections are organized by the main animal classifications such as mammals, birds, reptiles, fish, amphibians and insects. Each chapter covers one significant grouping (such as dogs, cats or horses), first describing an animal scientifically and then detailing the mythological attributes. Numerous examples cite texts or myths. A final section covers animal hybrids, animal monsters and mythical animals as well as stars, constellations and Zodiac symbols. An appendix describes basic details of the religions and mythologies covered. A glossary defines uncommon religious terms and explains scientific animal names.
