Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Whist Sketches: Review and Sketches of the First American Whist Congress, Held in Milwaukee, April 1891 Whist Sketches in book form are in recognition of requests for Free Presses in which they first appeared that far outran the supply. No claim is made for them. They are but the chroniclings of the fiends at their virgin Congress, with some running commentary. The new matter prepared for Part Second, of the Clubs in attendance upon the Congress, the personal of their members, the sketch of Mr. Trist, about whom too little has been known, that of Mr. Henry Jones, "Cavendish," with the reminiscences of that keystone in the solid arch of the game, the late James Clay, may have more than a passing interest for the whist world. The writer thanks the friends who kindly sent him data of their Clubs, Mr. C. D. P. Hamilton for his efficient aid, "Cavendish" for his good will to American whist players, shown by his voluntary contribution of the paper on "Whist Contrasts," and Mr. Jones and Mr. Trist for their portraits, which, through their faithful reproduction in the "Sketches," enables the fraternity of whist fiends to see these cranks of high degree just as they are. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The highly competitive and globalized software market is creating pressure on software companies. Given the current boundary conditions, it is critical to continuously increase time-to-market and reduce development costs. In parallel, driven by private life experiences with mobile computing devices, the World Wide Web and software-based services, peoples’ general expectations with regards to software are growing. They expect software that is simple and joyful to use. In the light of the changes that have taken place in recent years, software companies need to fundamentally reconsider the way they develop and deliver software to their customers. This book introduces fundamentals, trends and best practices in the software industry from a threefold perspective which equally takes into account design, management, and development of software. It demonstrates how cross-functional integration can be leveraged by software companies to successfully build software for people. Professionals from business and academia give an overview on state-of-the-art knowledge and report on key insights from their real-life experience. They provide guidance and hands-on recommendation on how to create winning products. This combined perspective fosters the transfer of knowledge between research and practice and offers a high practical value for both sides. The book targets both, practitioners and academics looking for successfully building software in the future. It is directed at Managing Directors of software companies, Software Project Managers, Product Managers and Designers, Software Developers as well as academics and students in the area of Software and Information Systems Engineering, Human Computer Interaction (HCI), and Innovation Management.

Download or read book Open Evaluation written by Jörg Haller and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-10 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selecting new product or service ideas that are worthwhile to be exploited has always been a major challenge to firms of all kinds. Recent developments, however, add a new facet to the evaluation challenge. Initiatives such as innovation contests, in which interested users may submit their ideas or solutions to firm relevant problems, frequently lead to several tens of thousands of submissions. Consequently, solutions are needed that help identifying the most promising ideas. The book “Open Evaluation” proposes a potential solution: integrating external stakeholders into the assessment of product and service ideas by means of IT, i.e. open evaluation. Based on both qualitative and quantitative research, the author examines design options, strategies, and the capacity of open evaluation to efficiently and effectively support decision-making for innovation.

Book A Mug Up with Elisabeth

Download or read book A Mug Up with Elisabeth written by Melissa Hayes and published by Down East Books. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anyone who has come under the spell of Elisabeth Ogilvie's novels to bound to wonder about this writer who, for more than fifty years, has crafted one memorable book after another: historical fiction, mysteries, young adult stories, even a gothic novel. Most are set in Maine or the Scottish Highlands, and for many readers it is Ogilvie's beautifully realized settings that make them pick up her novels again and again. Equally fascinating are her characters: vivid, individual, appealingly imperfect, deeply rooted in their families and home ground. Now, at last, we have a book about this prolific yet unassuming author who would rather live quietly on her Maine island than seek the limelight. A Mug-Up with Elisabeth is the definitive resource on her life, her work, her characters, and her settings--including Criehaven, the inspiration for Bennett's Island, which is arguably one of the most evocative locales in American fiction. On Bennett's Island, many a tale is told and many a crisis resolved around the kitchen table while the islanders pause for a "mug-up" of coffee. In these pages, readers can enjoy a mug-up with Elisabeth Ogilvie herself.
