Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE PEACEMAKER AWARD Surrounded by ranches, farms, and precious metal mines, the town of Dover Station, Montana is ripe for the plucking. It’s up to Sheriff Aaron Mackey to keep the peace—and keep the dregs of humanity from trying to make a killing . . . WHERE THE BULLETS FLY, VENGEANCE REIGNS If anyone can smell an investment opportunity, it’s railroad men and big city bankers. They’re not the kind of folks that Sheriff Mackey is used to dealing with. But greed is greed, and if anyone knows how money can drive men to murder, it’s the sheriff of a boomtown like Dover Station. But when Mackey is forced to gun down a pair of saloon rats, it brings a powderkeg of trouble—with a quick-burning fuse of vengeance named Alexander Duramont. This bloodthirsty psychopath wants to kill the sheriff for killing his buddies. And he plans to get his revenge using a highly combustible mix of fire, fear, and dynamite . . . Mackey’s not sure how he’s going to stop this blood-crazed lunatic. But it’s going to be one heck of an explosive and very violent showdown . . . “Hard to put down . . . because of the gritty and stylish narrative, the virtually nonstop action.” —Publishers Weekly on Terrence McCauley’s Sympathy for the Devil

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When it comes to writing weapons, most authors shoot from the hip--and miss. The Writer's Guide to Weapons will help you hit your target every time. Firearms and knives have starring roles in a wide range of genres--crime, thriller, war, mystery, Western, and more. Unfortunately, many depictions of weapons in novels and film are pure fiction. Knowing the difference between a shotshell and a slug, a pistol and a revolver, or a switchblade and a butterfly knife is essential for imbuing your story with authenticity--and gaining popularity with discerning readers. Inside you'll find: • An in-depth look at the basics of firearms and knives: how they work, why they work, what they look like, and how to depict them accurately in your stories. • The biggest weapons myths in fiction, TV, and film. • A surefire guide for choosing the correct weapon for your characters, no matter their skill level, strength, or background. • A review of major gun and knife laws, weapons safety tips, and common police tactics. • "The Hit List," showcasing the most popular weapons for spies, detectives, gunslingers, gangsters, military characters, and more. • Examples highlighting inaccurate vs. accurate weapons depictions. • An insightful foreword by David Morrell, the award-winning creator of Rambo. Equal parts accessible, humorous, and practical, The Writer's Guide to Weapons is the one resource you need to incorporate firearms and knives into your fiction like a seasoned professional.

Book excerpt: In an instant, the shock of a shooting death or injury from a violent crime can tear families apart. The unalterable changes which come about from random or intentional acts of shooting turn many lives upside down and incite both moral and spiritual challenges. In this, his first novel, When Bullets Fly, Ronald McKeever skillfully explores the colorful life of a community which undergoes challenges to their beliefs about family and friends, their individual relationships to God and God's love, and their responsibilities to each other. Struggle and hard work have always been a part of life for Chris and Shante Watson. However, they also have a strong faith in God. But, when the shock from a shooting so close to home challenges their love and trust, their family bonds will be potentially shattered forever. Lives get turned upside down when the changes begin, good and bad, and it feels just like they are being shot by the bullet, again. Weaving through this realistic and compelling story are three shootings which challenge family members, friends, and neighbors who must now find new ways to interact in each other's lives. Each person has to choose whom they will serve- God or the devil. They must gain enough spiritual strength to have faith and trust in a God they have never seen, and they must want Jesus Christ to be in their lives. Their only way to solve this dilemma is a return to God by restoration from the fuel of jealousy, drugs, alcohol, hatred, and fear, which ignited the shootings in the first place and which now threatens to rip them all apart. The battle will test their love for each other and their faith in God by having to trust above all understanding. When Bullets Fly compels readers to examine their own beliefs as they are subtly drawn through a full range of emotions. This book will be discussed over and over as the characters' relationships, which include spouses, children, siblings, classmates, best friends, sweethearts, sworn enemies, and God are carefully considered. It's a book which won't soon be forgotten.

Download or read book Marie Fran oise Huc written by Ian Bruce Robertson and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2016-04-21 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marie Françoise Huc was born in 1765 in Boucherville, Quebec. At the age of fifteen she married the surgeon Herman Melchior Eberts, a member of an Austrian regiment brought to Quebec by the British to help them quell the American Revolution. They had several children before Herman was banished from Quebec for committing a crime in the eyes of the Catholic Church. He went to far-off Detroit, still a British outpost. Marie and the children managed to follow him five years later, delayed by the Indian wars in the United States. The family grew and prospered in this rough frontier town as the American army took over. Then in 1805 Detroit burned to the ground, and the Eberts family was forced to move back to Upper Canada. They settled in happily, but in 1812 the historic war between British North America and the United States broke out. By mid-1813 Marie’s husband and four of her sons were involved in the fighting. Her home was sacked by the Americans that fall, and she fell ill. She died in December, a victim of the war. Marie Françoise Huc is an historical novel based on her true life story. She lived a good life, but also a hard life, tossed by the sadness of losing four of her eleven children in childhood, and by war, the side-effects of war, or the constant threat of war. Her story is the story of early Canada.

Book Delusions of Grandeur

Download or read book Delusions of Grandeur written by Joey Franklin and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2020-10 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Delusions of Grandeur Joey Franklin examines the dreams and delusions of America's most persistent mythologies--including the beliefs in white supremacy and rugged individualism and the problems of toxic masculinity and religious extremism--as they reveal themselves in the life of a husband and father fast approaching forty. With prose steeped in research and a playful, lyric attention to language, Franklin asks candid questions about what it takes to see clearly as a citizen, a parent, a child, a neighbor, and a human being. How should a white father from the suburbs talk with his sons about the death of Trayvon Martin? What do video games like Fortnite and Minecraft reveal about our appetites for destruction? Is it possible for Americans to celebrate bootstrap pioneer history while also lamenting the slavery that made it possible? How does the American tradition of exploiting cheap labor create a link between coal mining and plasma donation in southeast Ohio? Part cultural critique, part parental confessional, Delusions of Grandeur embraces the notion that the personal is always political, and reveals important, if sometimes uncomfortable, truths about our American obsessions with race, class, religion, and family.
