Book Life Is Magic

Download or read book Life Is Magic written by Jon Dorenbos and published by Avid Reader Press / Simon & Schuster. This book was released on 2020-11-03 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Jon Dorenbos is a magical person. Life Is Magic shows how we can all choose happiness in the face of overwhelming odds.” —Ellen DeGeneres An extraordinary and empowering story of resilience, forgiveness, and living a life of purpose in the face of unfathomable obstacles. You may know him as an NFL All-Pro or as a world-class magician who made the finals of America’s Got Talent, but Jon Dorenbos says that what he does is not who he is. He is someone who coached himself, at the most tender of ages, to turn tragedy to triumph. One morning in August 1992, when Jon was twelve years old and living a seemingly idyllic childhood in suburban Seattle, he woke up for baseball camp. His dad waved goodbye. Later that day, Jon heard the news: his father had murdered his mother in the family’s three-car garage. In an instant, his life had shattered. He’d essentially been orphaned. Thrust into foster care while his father stood trial for murder, Jon struggled. Left to himself, he discovered an unlikely escape performing magic tricks. If you found a way to alter your reality, after your dad—your hero—killed your mom, wouldn’t you cling to it too? Then came football, which provided a release for all of his pent-up anger. Together, magic and football saved him, leading to fourteen NFL seasons on the gridiron and raucous sleight of hand performances to packed houses across the globe. In 2017, he was diagnosed with a life-threatening heart condition leaving him with a choice. To either break down or—as he’d by now long taught himself—bounce back. “Life Is Magic shows how we can all choose happiness in the face of overwhelming odds” (Ellen DeGeneres) and provides a roadmap for overcoming even the darkest of times. Jon’s story is poignant and powerful, told by a charismatic and optimistic man who has overcome life-or-death challenges with grace, persistence, a childlike sense of wonder…and jaw-dropping card tricks.

It is a very important study." -- Rosette Lamont, Queens College and Graduate School, City University of New York "By treating Wiesel's novels as literary-spiritual stages in the development of Wiesel's larger experience, as a survivor-witness-writer, Dr. Fine's book takes on an inherently dramatic character which makes it alive and exciting as well as instructive." -- Terrence Des Pres, Colgate University "Fine clarifies Wiesel's intentions, especially illuminating the complex variations on the themes of speech and silence, fathers and sons, escape and return--in short, the ideas around which Wiesel organizes his literary universe. No one has done this before so thoroughly." -- Lawrence Langer, Simmons College

Book Evil Madness and Truth

Download or read book Evil Madness and Truth written by Anthony Fry and published by Ethics International Press. This book was released on 2024-03-29 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evil, Madness, and Truth uses a fictional narrative to present a number of ethical issues that will challenge readers. It centres on the autobiography of Gerda, the fictional illegitimate daughter of an actual, and infamous, female Nazi concentration camp guard, never named, who was tried and executed as a war criminal. Taken from her mother when she was a few weeks old, Gerda only discovered who her mother was when she was twelve years old – this by being told by her mother’s sister, who adopted her and whom she believed was her mother. She is devasted by this news. Finding out the details of her mother’s life and crimes becomes an obsession, and what she learns has a huge impact on her psychologically, emotionally and socially. It directs the journey of her life, including an intellectual path that sets her career as a philosopher preoccupied with evil and madness. Underpinning the narrative, and informing it, is an exercise in the philosophical inquiry in how evil has been understood. The book is an unusual hybrid of fact, fiction and philosophy

Book The Journey Continues from Groaning to Dancing

Download or read book The Journey Continues from Groaning to Dancing written by Richard Jones and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2022-01-24 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a pure pleasure for me to be writing again. Fourteen years of being involved in teaching and school administration have claimed most of my hours and focus. My desire to write turned into thoughts of “someday...” or “next year I’m gonna...”. With departure from the business of the classroom, I once again have the freedom to commit myself to putting pen to paper (or I should say, “fingers to keyboard”). William Faulkner wrote, “It is the writer’s privilege to help man endure by lifting his heart.” That is my desire, and I appreciate your allowing me to be a small part of the “heart-lifting” process in your life. Since my last project, I have had several requests to write a sequel, a second prayer devotional. A discussion with my late father ended with a commitment to do so. It is with pleasure that I honor that commitment. Much of what I write is never seen by anyone but the Lord and me, but written words can live on as long as there are readers to see them. Michael Straczynski called it “immortality by proxy.”

Book The Day Will Pass Away

Download or read book The Day Will Pass Away written by Ivan Chistyakov and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-08-08 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rare first-person testimony of the hardships of a Soviet labor camp—long suppressed—that will become a cornerstone of understanding the Soviet Union. Originally written in a couple of humble exercise books, which were anonymously donated to the Memorial Human Rights Centre in Moscow, this remarkable diary is one of the few first-person accounts to survive the sprawling Soviet prison system. At the back of these exercise books there is a blurred snapshot and a note, "Chistyakov, Ivan Petrovich, repressed in 1937-38. Killed at the front in Tula Province in 1941." This is all that remains of Ivan Chistyakov, a senior guard at the Baikal Amur Corrective Labour Camp. Who was this lost man? How did he end up in the gulag? Though a guard, he is a type of prisoner, too. We learn that he is a cultured and urbane ex-city dweller with a secret nostalgia for pre-Revolutionary Russia. In this diary, Chistyakov does not just record his life in the camp, he narrates it. He is a sharp-eyed witness and a sympathetic, humane, and broken man. From stumblingly poetic musings on the bitter landscape of the taiga to matter-of-fact grumbles about the inefficiency of his stove, from accounts of the brutal conditions of the camp to reflections on the cruelty of loneliness, this diary is an astonishing record—a visceral and immediate description of a place and time whose repercussions still affect the shape of modern Russia, and modern Europe.
