Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The era is 1200 CE, when the intruders from the west ravaged Bharat; a small kingdom in its eastern part was entering its golden period. The kingdom of Kalinga though a maritime superpower remained secluded and reclusive to the other nations of Bharat. This was not by chance, but by choice, as this holy land was fulfilling a prophecy that could become the basis of existence for the entire humankind after the Kali Yuga ends. The first book of the Konark Secret Duology is the tale of Bishnu Maharana, the chief architect of the Konark Temple. This is his journey about how he became a master architect and the secrets he unravels while constructing this shrine. Was this temple just a grand monument or were there secrets behind its construction? Why was an unusual technique being used for its creation, when there were tried and tested methods? Did this monument hold some secret within itself? Was Bishnu Maharana an architect or a man of secrets?

Book Memory of a Stream Gandhabati

Download or read book Memory of a Stream Gandhabati written by Piyush Das and published by Copal Publishing Group. This book was released on 2017-07-07 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the request of Himalaya, Ganga decided to flow in certain parts of Ekamra Kshetra (Bhubaneswar). By constantly carrying the fragrance of many scented flowers, the river is called as Gandhabati. Gandhabati, now-a-days called as gandha nala (a drain which stinks), has immense religious/mythological, ecological significance. Its association to various other tangible and intangible resources are also significant. But today this river/stream has been abandoned to a status of a drain. Rather than looking into histriography of a place, it is more relevant to look into the memory of the same. In this process one tries to see and understand various layers of time and its byproducts overlapped with different perceptions. In the case of this water stream, one can disintegrate its memory into natural system memory, mythological memory, associational memory and built memory. Once disintegrated, one can see overlaps of various attributes of memory in the form of diverse ranges of tangible and intangible heritage resources. This book is an attempt to map and document various tangible and intangible heritage resources associated to the Gandhabati stream. In the process the sacred cultural landscape of Ekamra Kshetra (Bhubaneswar) is understood.

Book Women Wellbeing and the Ethics of Domesticity in an Odia Hindu Temple Town

Download or read book Women Wellbeing and the Ethics of Domesticity in an Odia Hindu Temple Town written by Usha Menon and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a detailed ethnography of traditional, predominantly upper-caste, sequestered Hindu women in the temple town of Bhubaneswar in Odisha, a state in eastern India. It elaborates on a distinctive paradigm of domesticity and explicates a particular model of human wellbeing among this category. Part of the growing literature in “third wave” or “multicultural feminism”, it seeks to broaden the parameters of feminist discourse by going beyond questions of individual liberty or gender equality to examine the potential for female empowerment that exists in the context of these women’s lives. Its aims are twofold: first, to represent these women in ways that they themselves would recognize; and, second, to interpret, rather than merely “translate”, the beliefs and practices of the temple town such that their underlying logic becomes readily accessible to readers, even those unfamiliar with the Hindu world.

Book excerpt: Government Initiatives In Bus Transport Services Are Helping Commuters Efficient and affordable transport services are the lifeline of any region anywhere in the world. It goes without saying that this holds true for Odisha as well, particularly when it comes to the use of buses for commuting. Private bus operators provide good connectivity on many routes but recent government initiatives like Mo Bus have changed the scenario. Read our Cover Story to find out more. There was a time when sports and academics were considered to be poles apart. That belief has changed in recent years. Nobody can articulate this better than Odisha’s Sports and IT Minister Tusharkanti Behera who is an alumnus of IIT Kharagpur. The minister, who is our Cityzen for the edition, discusses this and more. He also talks about how Odisha has emerged as the ultimate sports destination of India over the past years, with facilities like the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar and the JN Indoor Stadium in Cuttack hosting major international and national sporting meets. The most recent one, the Khelo India University Games, was also held in Bhubaneswar, mostly at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), proving once again that Odisha is indeed the sports capital of India. There is a little bit of poetry in everybody’s life. Nobody knows it better than singer-musician Harpreet. Even as a child, he had understood that music, and poetry, would be his calling in life. He talks about this and lot more in Transit Lounge during his third, and most recent, visit to Odisha. The section also features Mahina Khanum and Avishai who have travelled the world to take Odissi to new audiences. What makes their journey so interesting is that Mahina is not from India to begin with and Avishai was introduced to Odissi by her. The government is working to restore and promote iconic tourist destinations like the Sun Temple in Konark. My City Links takes a close look at the plans, efforts on the ground, and listens to some dissonant voices to bring you the big picture in City Beat. Odisha-born cinematographer Piyush Putty is going places. His upcoming film is being produced by Shahrukh Khan’s production house. Get all the details in ScreenShots.
