Book excerpt: Sorrel, a Frenchman, writes horror novels. Recording what he sees in his mind’s eye onto paper comes naturally. But with unrelenting pressure to outdo his latest work, Sorrel becomes addicted to his current manuscript. Despite his success, negative experiences in Sorrel’s life had darkened the lens of his mind’s eye. Blackened as if coated by hell’s infernal ashes. This did not prevent him from seeing through to the other side. It only changed how he saw it. And the need to take what he saw and materialize it on this side of the lens seemed reasonable to him. How far will Sorrel go to materialize them? Acts carried out in real life with equally real consequences? No writer would have the audacity to stage a scene to capture it on the page. Surely, Sorrel wouldn’t. Or would he?
Download or read book Where Do Cities Come From and Where Are They Going To Modelling Past and Present Agglomerations to Understand Urban Ways of Life written by Francesca Fulminante and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2021-01-25 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last decade, there has been a surge of interest in urbanization and economic development, sparked by the realization that making urban life sustainable is one of the greatest challenges facing us in the 21st century (this is now one of the core sustainable development goals of the United Nations). This has exerted considerable pressure on researchers to come up with more scientific ways of studying urbanism and economic activity over the long run, which has resulted not only in the development of new theoretical frameworks, but also in the collection of vast amounts of data from a range of settings. This has led to the realization that, although there are significant differences between settlements in different settings, there are nonetheless important regularities and commonalities between a diverse group of settlements in range of geographical and historical contexts, including both ancient and modern ones. This suggests that a common feature of settlements is their ability to generate increased social connectivity, greater division of labour and specialization, and enhanced technological invention and innovation, albeit with costs to levels of equality, quality of life, and standards of living, as well as impacts on the environment, which cannot be separated from the emergence of confederations and states and the creation of settlement systems, hierarchies and networks. We believe that this field of enquiry now stands at a critical juncture. Although it is now feasible to talk about many aspects of ancient and modern urbanism with relative confidence, such as the numbers of cities or their sizes, much of the discussion of these themes within historical and archaeological circles has been on a discursive or qualitative level, while it is often difficult to harmonize the different models that have been applied to date into a consistent empirical and theoretical framework. A new approach to settlements throughout different contexts should now be within our grasp, however, thanks to both the ease with which information can be disseminated and the facilities that recent developments in IT offer us to model, analyse, and statistically test data.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are you going to do when they come for you is a question that should be asked of every human being as they journey in this life time, because the majority of the human race will experience the introduction of oppression and depression. Some people will experience being in this state longer than others. What are you going to do when they come for you? Was the ultimate question after her experiences with several levels and episodes of oppression and depression. After experiencing healing and deliverance through revelation in the word of God, Minister Allen was commissioned by God to share this information with others. God wants us to be healed, delivered and set free from this disorder. He wants us to ultimately identify the true source of the matter and to walk in the liberation where Christ has already made us free. This is also the prayer of Minister Delores A. Allen for her generational lineage and for others as well. This book will minister to the temporal as well as the spiritual needs of Gods people. [email protected]

The producing power per man has fallen off from fifteen to twenty percent. We have all been keen on developing consumption. We have devoted nine-tenths of our thought, energy and effort to developing consumption. This message is to beg of every reader to give more thought to developing production, to the reviving of a desire to produce and the realization of joy in production. –Foreword
Download or read book When They Come for You written by David Kirby and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2019-10-29 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revealing book about how government, law enforcement, and bureaucratic interests are seizing our property, our children, our savings, and our fundamental American rights—and how to fight back. Liberty and justice for all is the bedrock of American democracy, but has America betrayed our founders’ vision for the nation? In When They Come For You, New York Times bestselling author David Kirby exposes federal, state, and local violations of basic constitutional rights that should trouble every American, whether liberal, conservative, or libertarian. Free speech, privacy, protection from unreasonable search and seizure, due process, and equal protection under the law are rights that belong to every American citizen, but are being shredded at an alarming rate all across the country. Police and prosecutorial misconduct, overzealous bureaucrats with virtually unchecked power, unwarranted searches, SWAT-style raids on the homes of innocent Americans, crackdowns on a free press and the right to protest, removing children from their parents without cause, “debtors prisons," restricting freedom of health choice, seizing private assets for government profit, and much more demonstrate how deeply our rights and our national values are eroding. When They Come For You uses true stories of everyday citizens to reveal how our federal, state, and municipal governments, police, lawmakers, judges, revenue agents, unelected power brokers, and even government social workers are eviscerating our most fundamental liberties. And, it shows how people are fighting back—and winning.

Book excerpt: 2019 First Novelist Award from the Black Caucus of the American Library Association An “urgent and heartrending novel about an America on the brink” (Matt Gallagher, author of Youngblood), They Come in All Colors follows a biracial teenage boy who finds his new life in the big city disrupted by childhood memories of the summer when racial tensions in his hometown reached a tipping point. It’s 1968 when fourteen-year-old Huey Fairchild begins high school at Claremont Prep, one of New York City’s most prestigious boys’ schools. His mother had uprooted her family from their small hometown of Akersburg, Georgia, leaving behind Huey’s white father and the racial unrest that ran deeper than the Chattahoochee River. But for our sharp-tongued protagonist, forgetting the past is easier said than done. At Claremont, where the only other nonwhite person is the janitor, Huey quickly realizes that racism can lurk beneath even the nicest school uniform. After a momentary slip of his temper, Huey finds himself on academic probation and facing legal charges. With his promising school career in limbo, he begins to reflect on his memories of growing up in Akersburg during the Civil Rights Movement—and the chilling moments leading up to his and his mother’s flight north. With Huey’s head-shaking antics fueling this coming-of-age narrative, the novel triumphs as a tender and honest exploration of race, identity, family, and homeland, and a work that is “emotionally acute…eye-opening and rewarding for a wide range of readers” (Library Journal, starred review).
