Download or read book Justice Prevailed at Last written by Prashna Narayana Rai and published by Exceller Books. This book was released on 2024-09-18 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This novel is the English translation of the Kannada novel "Katheyadhale Kavayithree," originally published in March 2022 by author Prashna Narayana Rai. From the lofty perch of Themis, blindfolded and wielding the scales of justice, the triumph of equity is an axiom. Yet, as Sudhathri, raised on such idealistic tales, discovered during her baptism by fire in the courtroom, the scales often tip precariously. Justice isn't guaranteed to outweigh transgression; rather, brute force frequently prevails. This disillusionment sparked a fire within her: a determination to bolster the weight of justice. Enter Mugil, a childhood friend wasting away in the clutches of addiction under the thrall of Quarter Kariyappa, the gang leader. Ayesha, another childhood friend, exhausts herself in vain attempts to pull him back from the precipice. Desperate, she turns to Sudhathri, a college junior whose fictional narratives have captivated audiences. Sudhathri, wielding the power of pen and prose, crafts a poignant love story mirroring Mugil's life. The lines between fiction and reality blur, and Sudhathri finds herself enmeshed in the narrative she weaves. Set against the backdrop of a modern world, "Justice Prevailed at Last" interweaves the celestial love story of Earth and Sky with the intricate tapestry of Sudhathri, Mugil, and a cast of compelling characters. It delves deeper, questioning the impact of humanity's relentless reshaping of the world. Does nature, the primeval force of creation, countenance this disruption? Does humankind, in its hubristic efforts to mold the five elements to its will, recognize the potential consequences? This novel is a poignant exploration of justice, love, and the delicate balance between human intervention and the natural world.

Download or read book Six Amendments written by John Paul Stevens and published by Hachette+ORM. This book was released on 2014-02-18 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time ever, a retired Supreme Court Justice offers a manifesto on how the Constitution needs to change. By the time of his retirement in June 2010, John Paul Stevens had become the second longest serving Justice in the history of the Supreme Court. Now he draws upon his more than three decades on the Court, during which he was involved with many of the defining decisions of the modern era, to offer a book like none other. Six Amendments is an absolutely unprecedented call to arms, detailing six specific ways in which the Constitution should be amended in order to protect our democracy and the safety and wellbeing of American citizens. Written with the same precision and elegance that made Stevens's own Court opinions legendary for their clarity as well as logic, Six Amendments is a remarkable work, both because of its unprecedented nature and, in an age of partisan ferocity, its inarguable common sense.
Download or read book The Bible Justice and Public Theology written by David J. Neville and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-10-09 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public theology is a developing field of discourse concerned to address matters of pressing public concern in theological perspective for the common good. Themes of ecology, poverty, human rights, and especially justice feature prominently in its discourse. Although justice is also a prominent theme in the Bible, there is no single perspective on what constitutes justice in the Bible and no single view on how biblical perspectives on justice should contribute to contemporary discussion regarding the meaning and implementation of justice. Informed and inspired by Christopher Marshall's landmark work on Compassionate Justice (Cascade Books, 2012) in dialogue with Jesus' parables of the Good Samaritan and the Prodigal Son, this collection of studies addresses various interrelations between the Bible, justice, and public theology. Marshall himself proposes that certain parables of Jesus are paradigmatic for public theology, and some contributors respond to different dimensions of his treatment of the parables of the Good Samaritan and the Prodigal Son in terms of restorative justice. Other contributors, by contrast, examine broader related concerns such as justice in biblical, theological, and philosophical perspective, the hermeneutics of engagement for justice, the relation between feminist theology and restorative justice, biblical resources for public theology, and popular culture as both a conversation partner with and a medium for public theology.
Download or read book Stand Your Ground written by Douglas Brown, Kelly and published by Orbis Books. This book was released on 2015-05-05 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The 2012 killing of Trayvon Martin, an African-American teenager in Florida, and the subsequent acquittal of his killer, brought public attention to controversial "Stand Your Ground" laws. The verdict, as much as the killing, sent shock waves through the African-American community, recalling a history of similar deaths, and the long struggle for justice. On the Sunday morning following the verdict, black preachers around the country addressed the question, "Where is the justice of God? What are we to hope for?" This book is an attempt to take seriously social and theological questions raised by this and similar stories, and to answer black church people's questions of justice and faith in response to the call of God. But Kelly Brown Douglas also brings another significant interpretative lens to this text: that of a mother. "There has been no story in the news that has troubled me more than that of Trayvon Martin's slaying. President Obama said that if he had a son his son would look like Trayvon. I do have a son and he does look like Trayvon." Her book will also affirm the "truth" of a black mother's faith in these times of stand your ground."--
Download or read book The Shape of Things to Come written by Markandey Katju and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2019-07-10 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India is in the throes of transition--from a primarily feudal agrarian society to a modern, industrial one. For the transition to be successful, however, Markandey Katju says that the country needs to rid itself of the ills of the feudal days. But perturbed by the growing incidents of communalism, racial and lingual strife, corruption and persisting issues of poverty, casteism and unemployment, he is sceptical of the change arriving anytime soon. He argues that this turbulent transition might last for another twenty-odd years. In this timely collection of his views, Katju suggests that influential politicians and their governance are not enough, but a scientific mission for national reconstruction is the need of the hour to bring India into its own as a developed and egalitarian society. In his trademark no-holds-barred approach, the author holds up a mirror to the citizens of India and where they could be headed--so that from the dark times emerges a shining vision of the nation its people deserve. His forthright and unreserved views in The Shape of Things to Come give an important perspective to judge India's future.

Download or read book Europe s Justice Deficit written by Dimitry Kochenov and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-04-30 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The gradual legal and political evolution of the European Union has not, thus far, been accompanied by the articulation or embrace of any substantive ideal of justice going beyond the founders' intent or the economic objectives of the market integration project. This absence arguably compromises the foundations of the EU legal and political system since the relationship between law and justice-a crucial question within any constitutional system-remains largely unaddressed. This edited volume brings together a number of concise contributions by leading academics and young scholars whose work addresses both legal and philosophical aspects of justice in the European context. The aim of the volume is to appraise the existence and nature of this deficit, its implications for Europe's future, and to begin a critical discussion about how it might be addressed. There have been many accounts of the EU as a story of constitutional evolution and a system of transnational governance, but few which pay sustained attention to the implications for justice. The EU today has moved beyond its initial and primary emphasis on the establishment of an Internal Market, as the growing importance of EU citizenship and social rights suggests. Yet, most legal analyses of the EU treaties and of EU case-law remain premised broadly on the assumption that EU law still largely serves the purpose of perfecting what is fundamentally a system of economic integration. The place to be occupied by the underlying substantive ideal of justice remains significantly underspecified or even vacant, creating a tension between the market-oriented foundation of the Union and the contemporary essence of its constitutional system. The relationship of law to justice is a core dimension of constitutional systems around the world, and the EU is arguably no different in this respect. The critical assessment of justice in the EU provided by the contributions to this book will help to create a fuller picture of the justice deficit in the EU, and at the same time open up an important new avenue of legal research of immediate importance.
