Download or read book When We Walked on Frozen Rivers written by Elisabeth Weigand and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2023-09-26 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frozen Rivers is another spellbinding memoir in Elisabeth Weigand’s YukonWild Series. In our times of pain and suffering, this series brings to the reader something beautifully positive. A life when lived with purpose and virtue can be long enough. Each chapter is steeped in the author’s love of wilderness, her desire for adventure and her familiar intimacy with the land. Weigand orients the reader to the merits of slowing down the pace of life and reflecting on the significance of the smallest of our decisions. Frozen Rivers takes people to one of the purest places in Canada’s northern landscape: A distant fly-in trapline where Weigand and her partner spend the first of their winters understanding and exercising traditional life skills, adjusting to nature’s regulations and discovering the bliss of shared seclusion and the satisfaction when less is more. Her writing is evocative and poetic, humorous and informative, held together with atmospheric descriptions of the untamed heart of the Yukon Territory. A land that is bigger than us.
Download or read book Walking Home From Mongolia written by Rob Lilwall and published by Hodder & Stoughton. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting in the Gobi desert in winter, adventurer Rob Lilwall sets out on an extraordinary six-month journey, walking almost 5000 kilometres across China. Along the way he and his cameraman Leon brave the toxic insides of China's longest road tunnel, explore desolate stretches of the Great Wall and endure interrogation by the Chinese police. As they walk on through the heart of China, the exuberant hospitality of cave dwellers, coal miners and desert nomads keeps them going, despite sub-zero blizzards and the treacherous terrain. Rob writes with humour and honesty about the hardships of the walk, reflecting on the nature of pilgrimage and the uncertainties of an adventuring career. He also gives a unique insight into life on the road amid the epic landscapes and rapidly industrialising cities of backwater China.
Download or read book North Korean Migrants in China written by Hyoungah Park and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2024-04-05 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: North Korean Migrants in China follows the journey of North Koreans who escaped from North Korea and traveled to China and eventually to South Korea. Hyoungah Park interviews fifty-eight North Korean migrants in China and analyzes their stories, exploring why they decided to escape North Korea despite the risks, how they escaped, and their experiences being victimized by human trafficking. Many of these migrants were deceived, forced, and coerced by traffickers—they were sold as brides to unknown males in China, had to work in brothels and video chat rooms, and had to endure labor exploitation. Fear of being deported, language barriers, geographic unfamiliarity, and lack of knowledge made these individuals vulnerable to human trafficking. By parsing through contributing factors to these victimizations, Park is able to present policy implications to prevent future human trafficking.

This book was released on 2024-03-05 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daniela Rus, a leading roboticist and computer scientist, explores how we can use a new generation of smart machines to help humankind. There is a robotics revolution underway. A record 3.1 million robots are working in factories right now, doing everything from assembling computers to packing goods and monitoring air quality and performance. A far greater number of smart machines impact our lives in countless other ways—improving the precision of surgeons, cleaning our homes, extending our reach to distant worlds—and we’re on the cusp of even more exciting opportunities. In The Heart and the Chip, roboticist Daniela Rus and science writer Gregory Mone provide an overview of the interconnected fields of robotics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning, and reframe the way we think about intelligent machines while weighing the moral and ethical consequences of their role in society. Robots aren’t going to steal our jobs: they’re going to make us more capable, productive, and precise. At once optimistic and realistic, Rus and Mone envision a world in which these technologies augment and enhance our skills and talents, both as individuals and as a species—a world in which the proliferation of robots allows us all to be more human.
