Download or read book Land of the Bear written by Denny Geurink and published by Strategic Book Publishing. This book was released on 2014 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating book relates all the excitement, mystery, danger, and adventure of living and traveling in Siberia. It all started back in 1991, when I received an invitation via the Gorbachev government, in conjunction with a mining company working with the Soviet Union, to visit, write about, photograph, and film what the country had to offer American tourists and hunters. This was the era of "Glasnost" and "Perestroika." Gorbachev wanted to bring in American tourists to bolster the sagging economy. That first expedition led to 22 years traveling back and forth to the former Soviet Union - now Russia - where I hung out with the KGB, met numerous dignitaries, and lived in tents and trappers' cabins in Siberia with the local natives. We were attacked by bears, wild boars, and moose! Among those traveling with me were Apollo Astronaut Jim McDivitt, who was stalked by a Russian bear, and a four-star air force general, Earl O'Loughlin, who used to fly spy plane missions over the former Soviet Union. This made for a very interesting confrontation with the KGB. During my time in Siberia, I got to know many of the native people, who relayed numerous sad and harrowing stories of encounters with giant bears. The book is jam-packed with historical perspective of what was happening at this time in Russia, including how the people lived, worked, survived, and what they thought of Americans. While framed by hunting, this book is as much about the people and the culture of Siberia. About the Author Now retired, Michigan native Denny Geurink was previously a teacher and the Midwest editor for Field & Stream magazine. He wrote a weekly newspaper outdoor column for nearly forty years. Publisher's website: http: //sbprabooks.com/DennyGeurink

Book The Literary Works of Ou yang Hsui 1007 72

Download or read book The Literary Works of Ou yang Hsui 1007 72 written by Ronald C. Egan and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-01-09 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is a literary study of one of the greatest of Chinese writers, Ou-yang Hsiu. He was a major writer in each of several genres: prose, poetry, rhapsodies, and tz'u 'songs'. The striking diversity of his work presents an opportunity to investigate how one man's literary talent is manifested in different genres. Ou-yang Hsiu's achievements in each genre are examined, and set in the context of his age. Topics include the broad shift between T'ang and Sung dynasty prose styles that Ou-yang Hsiu helped to effect, his contributions to the new poetic values of the Northern Sung, and his place in the evolution of Sung dynasty songs (together with a reconsideration of a group of supposedly spurious songs). An appendix provides additional translations of Ou-yang Hsiu's prose.

Book excerpt: The Pied Flycatcher is one of Europe's best-studied species. The first detailed work on it was begun in the 1930s by German ornithologists, but it was Lars von Haartman's Finnish study that both established long-term research on the species and founded many of the central themes of modern ornithology. Soon after, in the late 1940s, Bruce Campbell set up an intensive project in southwest England, which also still runs to this day. Many other eminent ornithologists followed and in 1979 Arne Lundberg and Rauno Alatalo started their own work in Sweden, Finland and latterly the north of England. A Palaearctic migrant, the Pied Flycatcher is notable for its very variable male plumage and complex territorial and polygynous breeding system. They take readily to nest boxes and have provided excellent opportunities for the study of a wide range of biological problems. This broad review of the species provides not only a detailed biology of this fascinating little bird, but a commentary on many of the most interesting problems in bird behaviour and ecology. Illustrated by Tomas Part.

Book Two Thousand Zhuang Proverbs from China with Annotations and Chinese and English Translation

Download or read book Two Thousand Zhuang Proverbs from China with Annotations and Chinese and English Translation written by Zhou Yanxian and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2016-11-24 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China is home to one of the largest and oldest societies in the world, and presently contains fifty-six ethnic groups. Among them is the Zhuang, the largest of the minority populations, which partakes in a very long history of preliterate oral traditions. This volume presents an introduction to Zhuang language and culture in Zhuang proverbs. The two thousand proverbs explored in this text bear the weight of Zhuang history and culture, and embody the wisdom collected from publications, manuscripts, and the speeches of the people who live in Zhuang villages. These proverbs are grouped into nine sections: Truths; Morality; Family; Everyday Life; Social Life; Labor; Nature; Customs; and Politics. Together, they form an essential distillation of the Zhuang history, tradition, philosophy, and most importantly, its legacy. This accessible introduction – which includes translations in Zhuang Pinyin letters, Mandarin, and American English for each proverb – provides an important corpus for the study of the Zhuang ethnic group by scholars, students, and others who are interested in Zhuang language, culture, folklore and oral traditions, and proverbs.
