Book excerpt: More than 70 percent of women with children under the age of 18 work. And that's why I found it so astounding that when I searched for a book that explained to my toddler what I was doing all day after he was peeled from me, crying, at daycare, I couldn't find a thing. There was plenty out there about separation anxiety or going to school, but so little about what mommy did when she disappeared for the day. I had grown up without a role model for a working mother myself. Raised by a wonderful stay-at-home mom, I worried that I wouldn't know how to reconcile my career ambitions with my love for my family. Like many moms dissatisfied with what is available to them, I decided to make my own, and that's when I created Mommy Goes to Work. My goal is twofold: to facilitate the conversation between mother and child about what we moms are doing all day long in a relatable way, and to help employers signal to their employees that their workplace is family-friendly by giving them a copy of this book.I envision Mommy Goes to Work as a building block in your relationship with your child and with your colleagues and tribes. I hope it provides a conversation starting point where you can share with your little one the important things that you do all day when you're not with them--a foundation to be an incredible working mom role model. And I hope that it allows you to find your tribe of fellow working moms who will welcome you with open arms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A little girl stays home with Mama when Mommy goes off on a work trip in this tender, inviting story that will resonate with every child who has missed a parent. For one little girl, there’s no place she’d rather be than sitting between Mama and Mommy. So when Mommy goes away on a work trip, it’s tricky to find a good place at the table. As the days go by, Mama brings her to the library, they watch movies, and all of them talk on the phone, but she still misses Mommy as deep as the ocean and as high as an astronaut up in the stars. As they pass by a beautiful garden, the girl gets an idea . . . but when Mommy finally comes home, it takes a minute to shake off the empty feeling she felt all week before leaning in for a kiss. Michael L. Printz Award winner Nina LaCour thoughtfully renders a familiar, touching story of a child who misses a parent, illustrated by Kaylani Juanita, whose distinctive style brings charm and playfulness to this delightful family of three.

Book Overcoming Loss

Download or read book Overcoming Loss written by Julia Sorensen and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 2008-06-15 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Overcoming Loss is a photocopiable resource that addresses childrens' feeling of loss, which can arise from changing communities, schools, moving house, divorce or the death of a parent or grandparent. Children are limited to a vocabulary of broad emotions like 'happy', 'sad' and 'angry', and are often unable to articulate their grief in words. This can impair their long-term emotional development. The activities in Overcoming Loss use the power of play and creative arts to give the grieving child the language to identify subtle feelings, such as shame, despair and jealousy. Designed to encourage social and emotional learning, these exercises employ play, art and story-telling to access the ways in which children naturally express their feelings, and offers opportunities for parents and professionals to direct the child towards understanding their emotions. Parents, teachers, counsellors and anyone working with children between the ages of 4 and 8 who are dealing with a loss will find this resource a practical and effective tool.
