Book Talking about Naval History

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NOTE: NO FURTHER DISCOUNT ON THIS PRINT PRODUCT-- OVERSTOCK SALE -- Significantly reduced list price Twenty essays selected from the writings of John B. Hattendorf, Ernest J. King Professor of Maritime History at the U.S. Naval War College, between 2001 and 2009. They represent a wide historical perspective that ranges across nearly four centuries of maritime history. A number of these pieces have been published previously but have appeared in other languages and in other countries, where they may not have come to the attention of an American naval reading audience. This collection is divided into parts that deal with four major themes: the broad field of maritime history; general naval history, with specific focus on the classical age of sail, from the mid-seventeenth century to the end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815; the wide scope of American naval history from 1775 to the end of the twentieth century; and finally, the realm of naval theory and its relationship to naval historical studies. They are reprinted, with only minor alterations, as they originally appeared. This work may appeal to general history readers, scholarly and general adult readers of history especially naval and maritime, plus students pursuing coursework in military science degree programs. Book The Parent s Guide to the U S Navy

Download or read book The Parent s Guide to the U S Navy written by Thomas J Cutler and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2017-02-15 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Military ways can be enigmatic, resulting in an alien world where acronyms often replace words and where “1330” is a time of day. Add to that, the Navy is not only military, it is nautical, which adds centuries of sea-going terminology and practices to the confusion. While the young men and women who sign on to become sailors in the United States Navy receive extensive indoctrination and training, their parents do not. As their sons and daughters are becoming uniformed, the parents remain uninformed. This book is both a translation manual and a cultural guide to their son’s or daughter’s chosen new world. Alongside chapters covering uniforms, ranks, ships, and aircraft, are explanations and guidance as to what to expect when their child first joins the Navy, the many benefits their sailor will enjoy, and what families should bring and do when visiting their sailors in their new and somewhat alien world. Designed to be an easy read as well as a useful reference work, The Parent’s Guide to the U.S. Navy is essential reading for those parents whose children have chosen to “go down to the sea in ships.

Book This Life s Tempestuous Sea

Download or read book This Life s Tempestuous Sea written by Douglas Charles Toland and published by Author House. This book was released on 2013-06 with total page 553 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a weak moment, I have written a book. -Margaret Mitchell This book is a multilayered creation that touches on a wide array of topics, many of them drawn from personal experiences. Indeed, you the lucky reader will be blessed with enough material for at least three books within one cover. Why would I want to write such a multi-themed book? It wasn't my original intention. Maybe I've learned an important lesson and won't do so next time. Like many older folks, I wanted to share what I have learned to be true and useful and couldn't seem to stay with a single topic. I've lived long enough to confirm an important realization: the gleanings from a well-lived life are at least as important as knowledge gained vicariously through reading and classroom attendance. But I think most people don't fully appreciate the value of their life lessons and end up taking most of them to the grave. I want to counter that pattern and use this book to share as many of my gleanings as I can. I also recognize several imminent dangers facing this nation and our planet and feel compelled to share these concerns. Just as important: I want my wife, children, and grandchildren to know more about who I was and who I've come to be. I hope they will have occasions to use some of my wisdom.

His initiation into the navy cadets comes with some unexpected—and dangerous—complications… and Graham quickly learns that there’s no substitute for self-respect and being true to yourself.
