Book Growing Up in the Lone Star State

Download or read book Growing Up in the Lone Star State written by Gaylon Finklea Hecker and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2021-04-06 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gaylon Finklea Hecker and Marianne Odom began the interviews for this book in 1981 and devoted a professional lifetime to collecting the memories of accomplished Texans to determine what, if anything, about growing up in the Lone Star State prepared them for success. The resulting forty-seven oral history interviews begin with tales from the early 1900s, when Texas was an agrarian state, and continue through the growth of major cities and the country’s race to the moon. Interviewees recalled life in former slave colonies; on gigantic ranches, tiny farms, and sharecropper fields; and in one-horse towns and big-city neighborhoods, with relatable stories as diverse as the state’s geography. The oldest interviewees witnessed women earning the right to vote and weathered the Great Depression. Many remembered two world wars, while others recalled the Texas City explosion of 1947 and the tornado that devastated Waco in 1953. They witnessed the advent of television and the nightly news, which helped many come to terms with the assassination of a president that took place too close to home. Their absorbing reflections are stories of good and bad, hope and despair, poverty and wealth, depression and inspiration, which would have been different if lived anywhere but Texas.

Dude McLean Class of 1965 ********** When we went through spring workouts in 1965 there were a few turds that should not have been out there and we would hit them hard and try to run them off. John Nilson Class of 1966 ********** After the first game under Coach Stallings in 1965 against LSU .. We ran over 100 wind sprints of around 100 yards each and this killed our legs for the rest of the season. Book Courage Beyond the Game

Download or read book Courage Beyond the Game written by Jim Dent and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2011-08-16 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jim Dent, the award-winning, New York Times bestselling author of The Junction Boys, returns with a powerful Texas story which transcends college football, displaying the courage and determination of one of the game's most valiant players. Freddie Steinmark was a small but scrappy young man when he arrived at the University of Texas in 1967. A tenacious competitor, Freddie became UT's star safety by the start of the 1969 season, but he'd also developed a crippling pain in his thigh. Freddie continued to play, helping the Longhorns to rip through opponents like pulpwood. His final game was for the 1969 national championship, when the Longhorns rallied to beat Arkansas in a legendary game that has become known as "the Game of the Century." Tragically, bone cancer took Freddie off the field when nothing else could. But nothing could extinguish his irrepressible spirit or keep him away from the game. Today, a photo of Freddie hangs in the tunnel at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, where players touch it before games en route to the field. With Courage Beyond the Game, a Brian's Song for college football, Jim Dent once again brings readers to cheers and tears with a truly American tale of bravery in the face of the worst odds.

Book Lone Star Nation

Download or read book Lone Star Nation written by Richard Parker and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-11-04 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To most Americans, Texas has been that love-it-or-hate it slice of the country that has sparked controversy, bred presidents, and fomented turmoil from the American Civil War to George W. Bush. But that Texas is changing—and it will change America itself.Richard Parker takes the reader on a tour across today's booming Texas, an evolving landscape that is densely urban, overwhelmingly Hispanic, exceedingly powerful in the global economy, and increasingly liberal. This Texas will have to ensure upward mobility, reinvigorate democratic rights, and confront climate change—just to continue its historic economic boom. This is not the Texas of George W. Bush or Rick Perry.Instead, this is a Texas that will remake the American experience in the twenty-first century—as California did in the twentieth—with surprising economic, political, and social consequences. Along the way, Parker analyzes the powerful, interviews the insightful, and tells the story of everyday people because, after all, one in ten Americans in this century will call Texas something else: Home.

Book More Tales from Aggieland

Download or read book More Tales from Aggieland written by Brent Zwerneman and published by Sports Publishing LLC. This book was released on 2005 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More Tales From Aggieland, a compelling collection of stories and anecdotes compiled by Zwerneman, who has covered the Aggies for a decade, offers readers insight and plenty of humor on a wide range of A&M sports and events, including Parker's splendiferous leap. On the heels of Zwerneman's successful Game of My Life: 25 Stories of Aggies Football, More Tales from Aggieland relates entertaining narratives from athletes over the decades who dearly love Texas A&M and also reveals intriguing stories to the Aggies faithful. For example, read about the recent discovery, deep in the bowels of Kyle Field, of a long-lost Sugar Bowl trophy, an elegant momento from A&M football's lone national championship season in 1939. People had their minds on things other than athletics, said Jim Sterling, a member of the 1939 team--speaking of the Great Depression and the impending world war, and why the trophy probably was lost in the first place. Now, from out of the dungeons of old Kyle, that sterling silver reminder of A&M football's most glorious day is basking in the light of Aggieland once again. Read about this and other fascinating and often fun chronicles from Texas A&M sports in More Tales from Aggieland.
