Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insightful and interdisciplinary, this book considers the movement of people around the world and how contemporary artists contribute to our understanding of it In this timely volume, artists and thinkers join in conversation around the topic of global migration, examining both its cultural impact and the culture of migration itself. Individual voices shed light on the societal transformations related to migration and its representation in 21st-century art, offering diverse points of entry into this massive phenomenon and its many manifestations. The featured artworks range from painting, sculpture, and photography to installation, video, and sound art, and their makers--including Isaac Julien, Richard Mosse, Reena Saini Kallat, Yinka Shonibare MBE, and Do Ho Suh, among many others--hail from around the world. Texts by experts in political science, Latin American studies, and human rights, as well as contemporary art, expand upon the political, economic, and social contexts of migration and its representation. The book also includes three conversations in which artists discuss the complexity of making work about migration. Amid worldwide tensions surrounding refugee crises and border security, this publication provides a nuanced interpretation of the current cultural moment. Intertwining themes of memory, home, activism, and more, When Home Won't Let You Stay meditates on how art both shapes and is shaped by the public discourse on migration.

Book The Ungrateful Refugee

Download or read book The Ungrateful Refugee written by Dina Nayeri and published by Canongate Books. This book was released on 2019-05-30 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'A vital book for our times' ROBERT MACFARLANE 'Unflinching, complex, provocative' NIKESH SHUKLA 'A work of astonishing, insistent importance' Observer Aged eight, Dina Nayeri fled Iran along with her mother and brother, and lived in the crumbling shell of an Italian hotel-turned-refugee camp. Eventually she was granted asylum in America. Now, Nayeri weaves together her own vivid story with those of other asylum seekers in recent years. In these pages, women gather to prepare the noodles that remind them of home, a closeted queer man tries to make his case truthfully as he seeks asylum and a translator attempts to help new arrivals present their stories to officials. Surprising and provocative, The Ungrateful Refugee recalibrates the conversation around the refugee experience. Here are the real human stories of what it is like to be forced to flee your home, and to journey across borders in the hope of starting afresh.

There’s a reason Alison Green has been called “the Dear Abby of the work world.” Ten years as a workplace-advice columnist have taught her that people avoid awkward conversations in the office because they simply don’t know what to say. Thankfully, Green does—and in this incredibly helpful book, she tackles the tough discussions you may need to have during your career. You’ll learn what to say when • coworkers push their work on you—then take credit for it • you accidentally trash-talk someone in an email then hit “reply all” • you’re being micromanaged—or not being managed at all • you catch a colleague in a lie • your boss seems unhappy with your work • your cubemate’s loud speakerphone is making you homicidal • you got drunk at the holiday party Praise for Ask a Manager “A must-read for anyone who works . . . [Alison Green’s] advice boils down to the idea that you should be professional (even when others are not) and that communicating in a straightforward manner with candor and kindness will get you far, no matter where you work.”—Booklist (starred review) “The author’s friendly, warm, no-nonsense writing is a pleasure to read, and her advice can be widely applied to relationships in all areas of readers’ lives. Book America for Americans

Download or read book America for Americans written by Lee Dobry and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2020-02-21 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America for Americans is Dobry's attempt to explain some of the basic concepts of America, things that the schools are not allowed to teach nowadays. Basic things like what is the idea of America? What makes this country unique in the history of the world? Where does money come from, and who decides how much each country gets? We hear about everyone's "Constitutional Rights," but what are they? Why would anyone in their right mind want to destroy the Constitution, the one document that guarantees our protections against a tyrannical government. What is socialism, at least today's version of it? Can socialism really work long term in America? What is the cost of socialism? What is the socialist agenda? What is the conservative agenda? These are things that all Americans need to understand well, what we have and what we stand to lose. America is at a critical point right now. What we do in the 2020 elections will not only determine what kind of life we will have, but also what kind of life our children and grandchildren and their children will have, and we need to be keenly aware of that. Will they live free, or will they live as subjects under an all-controlling government? We need to consider that very carefully because your freedom is like your life: once you give it up, you won't get it back. We all need to be well-informed with the truth before we make decisions that will have irreversible consequences for the future generations of Americans. We have the right to throw away our own freedoms if we so choose. We do not have the right to throw away theirs. And it's not just about the 2020 elections. It won't end there. The fight to keep socialist forces from taking away Americans' freedom will go on until either they win or we defeat them. There can be no compromise between freedom and slavery. It's one or the other. There is no middle ground.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Georgia has produced some of the major figures of modern literature, including Carson McCullers, Erskine Caldwell and, most notably, Flannery O'Connor. While such writers are firmly established in American literary history, all too few readers are aware of how the state's tradition of literary excellence persists in the present day. The thirty stories in After O'Connor were written during the past fifteen years by authors who were born in Georgia or spent a significant part of their lives and careers in this state. Embracing the social, cultural, and ethnic variety in today's Georgia, After O'Connor both advances and helps redefine the great southern storytelling tradition.

Book excerpt: In Lost on the Mountain Laya Whisten sat and watched the life fade from her husband Cal as he was dying with scarlet fever. She was left to run a 2000 acre spread, called the Swinging W Ranch. Shed made a solemn promise to herself when Cal died that she would never get married again and she had kept that promise for 8 years. Until she met sheriff Cole Walters, of Butte Montana. She had risen on a cold December morning, made a circle on the window pane to see out, finding a menagerie of snow and ice cycles everywhere. She was headed to her cabin in the mountain and knew she had to get there before nightfall. She spent every winter there gather stray cattle, holding them in the barn until she could bring them back down the mountain during the spring. She saddled Nick, her favorite horse and headed into the timber line. When she was about three miles from home the snow became heavier making it difficult to see where she was going. She had heard a whimper coming from a bush near the trail. She slid off her hoarse to investigate and found it to be a baby wolf. The little wolf refused to let her pick him up until she had fed him several biscuits from her saddle bag. They formed a bond of love, which would last on through the years. He protected her, and found her, when she was lost in a blinding snow storm in the mountains. Her and the wolf pup encountered a grizzly bear on the way back to the cabin, as they were coming from sheltering Nick in the barn when they first arrived. During the night as she dozed in her rocking chair in front of the fireplace, she awoke to a noise outside the cabin. Thinking the grizzly had returned, she grabbed the gun from over the fireplace and silently eased to the window. She saw a silhouette of a man over the saddle of his horse. Laya found a bullet lodged in his right shoulder and knew that she had to get it out. She later finds out he is sheriff Cole Walters of Beatue, Montana and he had been chasing the outlaw who had burned his home three years earlier, with his wife and child trapped inside. Both died in the fire. Cole fell in love with Laya the minute he opened his eyes and saw her sitting by his bed waiting for him to regain consciousness. Even stressed from her administration of taking the bullet from his shoulder, she was the most beautiful person Cole had ever laid eyes on. It took a long time to win Laya over and return his love, but Cole refused to give up. He had to have her.

Book Southern Frontier Humor

Download or read book Southern Frontier Humor written by Thomas Inge and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2010-05-12 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If, as some suggest, American literature began with Huckleberry Finn, then the humorists of the Old South surely helped us to shape that literature. Twain himself learned to write by reading the humorists’ work, and later writers were influenced by it. This book marks the first new collection of humor from that region published in fifteen years—and the first fresh selection of sketches and tales to appear in over forty years. Thomas Inge and Ed Piacentino bring their knowledge of and fondness for this genre to a collection that reflects the considerable body of scholarship that has been published on its major figures and the place of the movement in American literary history. They breathe new life into the subject, gathering a new selection of texts and adding Twain—the only major American author to contribute to and emerge from the movement—as well as several recently identified humorists. All of the major writers are represented, from Augustus Baldwin Longstreet to Thomas Bangs Thorpe, as well as a great many lesser-known figures like Hamilton C. Jones, Joseph M. Field, and John S. Robb. The anthology also includes several writers only recently discovered to be a part of the tradition, such as Joseph Gault, Christopher Mason Haile, James Edward Henry, and Marcus Lafayette Byrn, and features authors previously overlooked, such as William Gilmore Simms, Ham Jones, Orlando Benedict Mayer, and Adam Summer. Selections are timely, reflecting recent trends in literary history and criticism sensitive to issues of gender, race, and ethnicity. The editors have also taken pains to seek out first printings to avoid the kinds of textual corruptions that often occur in later versions of these sketches. Southern Frontier Humor offers students and general readers alike a broad perspective and new appreciation of this singular form of writing from the Old South—and provides some chuckles along the way.
