Download or read book Theory for a Towed Wheel in Soil written by John L. McRae and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report deals with one small phase of the problem of mobility for cross-country vehicles, namely a wheel being towed through soft soil. A new concept in soil mechanics is sought which will cope with the problem of the behavior of soil when massive displacements are involved, as occurs when a wheel cuts a deep rut in soft material. It is suggested that such movement of a soil is more in the nature of a flow phenomenon, and an energy-per-unit-volume concept is hypothesized in which the total energy spent (area under the load-sinkage curve) is divided by the net volume of soil displaced by a penetrating element. Download or read book Controlling Differential Settlement of Highway Soft Soil Subgrade written by Hanhua Zhu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-05-25 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on years of practical on-site experience, this book presents a new method for controlling "bridge-head bumping" in soft soil ground. Based on deformation compatibility and control theory of structure, it proposes strategies for improving the design method of soft soil ground and the effective "bridge-head bumping" control method. Soft soil ground is chiefly characterized by a large void ratio, high compressibility, high water content, low impermeability, low strength, strong structure and high sensitivity. As a result, it has pronounced rheological properties, and controlling "bridge-head bumping" in soft soil ground is essential to control the amount of soil rheology-induced unstable successive settlement. The book offers extensive information on this and related topics, making it a valuable guide for engineers in Civil Engineering and Geotechnical Engineering alike.

Download or read book Advances in Space Science and Technology written by Frederick I. Ordway and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-12-02 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Space Science and Technology, Volume 9 provides information pertinent to the science and technology of space flight. This book presents the technological aspects of astronautics and reviews the concepts of lunar transportation. Organized into six chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the varied requirements of life forms on Earth. This text then examines the possible chemical composition of the soil as well as air pressure, radiation, light, and atmospheric composition. Other chapters consider the intriguing theory that fossil life exists on or beneath a hypothetical buried frozen ocean. This book discusses as well the problems of conducting meaningful measurements with fly-through, fly-by, and lander probes. The reader is also introduced to the possible interior composition of the other planets. The final chapter examines the composition of the Sun both theoretically and spectroscopically. This book is a valuable resource for astronomers, astrogeologists, scientists, research workers, and engineers.
Download or read book Bicycling Science third edition written by David Gordon Wilson and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2004-03-19 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new, updated edition of a popular book on the history, science, and engineering of bicycles. The bicycle is almost unique among human-powered machines in that it uses human muscles in a near-optimum way. This new edition of the bible of bicycle builders and bicyclists provides just about everything you could want to know about the history of bicycles, how human beings propel them, what makes them go faster, and what keeps them from going even faster. The scientific and engineering information is of interest not only to designers and builders of bicycles and other human-powered vehicles but also to competitive cyclists, bicycle commuters, and recreational cyclists. The third edition begins with a brief history of bicycles and bicycling that demolishes many widespread myths. This edition includes information on recent experiments and achievements in human-powered transportation, including the "ultimate human- powered vehicle," in which a supine rider in a streamlined enclosure steers by looking at a television screen connected to a small camera in the nose, reaching speeds of around 80 miles per hour. It contains completely new chapters on aerodynamics, unusual human-powered machines for use on land and in water and air, human physiology, and the future of bicycling. This edition also provides updated information on rolling drag, transmission of power from rider to wheels, braking, heat management, steering and stability, power and speed, and materials. It contains many new illustrations.
