Download or read book Cassell s Dictionary of Slang written by Jonathon Green and published by Sterling Publishing Company, Inc.. This book was released on 2005 with total page 1600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With its unparalleled coverage of English slang of all types (from 18th-century cant to contemporary gay slang), and its uncluttered editorial apparatus, Cassell's Dictionary of Slang was warmly received when its first edition appeared in 1998. 'Brilliant.' said Mark Lawson on BBC2's The Late Review; 'This is a terrific piece of work - learned, entertaining, funny, stimulating' said Jonathan Meades in The Evening Standard. But now the world's best single-volume dictionary of English slang is about to get even better. Jonathon Green has spent the last seven years on a vast project: to research in depth the English slang vocabulary and to hunt down and record written instances of the use of as many slang words as possible. This has entailed trawling through more than 4000 books - plus song lyrics, TV and movie scripts, and many newspapers and magazines - for relevant material. The research has thrown up some fascinating results

Book The Secret Five and the Stunt Nun Legacy

Download or read book The Secret Five and the Stunt Nun Legacy written by John Lawrence and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2010 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comic novel, a surreal parody of children’s adventure stories aimed at adult readers in which, unnervingly, the time-travelling characters are aware of their place in the narrative, and the author treats them with curmudgeonly disdain. The plot, creaky and with more holes than a Swiss cheese, is the vehicle for the quirky and unusual humour which is packed onto every page. Our young-adult heroes, Betty, Daniel, Ricky, Amy and their dog Whatshisname, think that they live life on the edge, dominated by secret passwords and meetings. They have a tetchy relationship with Whatshisname, who might just be cleverer than they think; they also have a tetchy relationship with the author, who definitely isn’t. The characters sometimes become uncontrollable. Ricky walks out of the book at one stage and, at another critical point, Daniel demands that his character should wear spectacles. A feeble attempt by the author to kill off his characters fails miserably. This book for adults is crammed with humour, occasionally a little cheeky, never offensive, but always unashamedly silly.

Book Whatshisname

  • Author : Wes Butters
  • Publisher : Tomahawk Press
  • Release : 2010
  • ISBN : 9780955767074
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Whatshisname written by Wes Butters and published by Tomahawk Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At last - the definitive biography of Charles Hawtrey! From Wes Butters, Sony award winning broadcaster and author of Kenneth Williams Unseen, comes an extensively researched and compelling book almost fifteen years in the making, featuring scores of exclusive interviews, including Hawtrey's inner circle and surviving descendents, never-before-seen photographs, and private documents and correspondence. The result is the first definitive account of a life Hawtrey himself was keen to see evaporate into the mist of history. Years before, Hawtrey started out as a child actor in silent films, he was England's leading boy soprano and worked alongside a positive who's who of the thirties and forties. He had directed films and produced West End shows, starred in three hit TV series and was a prolific radio actor for the BBC. Yet he was never content and spent his life desperately searching for stardom and success, which, in his own deluded way of thinking, always failed to live up to expectations. He wasn't the least bit interested in his reputation or leaving a legacy, growing old disgracefully in Deal, the Kent seaside town he lived in for the last twenty years of his life: collapsing in pubs; swearing at autograph-hunting children; and, taking home teenage rent boys (one of whom set fire to Hawtrey's cottage, with Hawtrey still inside it). He died in 1988. Nine people were at his funeral.

Book Stories for in the Campfire

Download or read book Stories for in the Campfire written by Ronaldo Siète and published by Editorial Perdido. This book was released on 2017-02-01 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 New Joke Times Bestseller @Ronaldo7Siete is serious about only one thing: he thinks he's the funniest writer at Wattpad. Of course, everybody laughs about that, but… doesn't that mean that he has a point? In 9 tragedies Ronaldo warns us about writing; he tells about his experiences and advises us: "Don't try this at home, kids." In 9 comedies you can read what happens if you don't follow that advice: you'll become the joke of the day, the absolute number 1 at the New Joke Times Bestseller list. Is Ronaldo7 really the funniest writer at Wattpad or is anyone crazy enough to accept the challenge? Is this really a bundle of 18 short stories or did Ronaldo7 trick his readers? He is, in fact, a novel writer, and he does write great plots. You have a choice: read the book, or burn it (at Fahrenheit 451 degrees). Disclaimer: The writer of this work of fiction does not accept responsibility for physical or emotional maladies that these stories might cause to readers. When you laugh so much that your face hurts, or when you fall off your chair of laughter, or even when you laugh yourself to death, the author of these stories will not pay the bills of your medical service. No animals were hurt in this book: no chicken or sparrow or mocking jay, not one of the three little pigs, not that bird that cleans and cooks in "50 Shades of Snow White", not even the Dragon in the story "How To Kill A Dragon".

Book Proper Names

Download or read book Proper Names written by Stefano Predelli and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stefano Predelli defends a semantics of proper names which has simplicity and common sense in its favour: proper names are non-indexical devices of rigid and direct reference. He grounds this view in accounts of the shape and form of names, and of their introduction within language use, and he responds to widespread misconceptions and objections.

Book The Wizard Knight Companion

Download or read book The Wizard Knight Companion written by Michael Andre-Driussi and published by Sirius Fiction. This book was released on 2009-09-01 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE WIZARD KNIGHT COMPANION is a brief alphabetical dictionary for Gene Wolfe's two-volume THE WIZARD KNIGHT series. Its entries identify the characters in the novel, dive into the mysteries in the text, and explore the Norse, Celtic, and Arthurian sources for names and words in the novels. It includes a map of the region, a cosmology, and a synopsis of the narrative. Nominated for a World Fantasy Award, THE WIZARD KNIGHT has received high accolades from critics and fans. Many reviews highlight its rich use of European mythology; many also comment on its puzzles and mysteries. In a starred review, Booklist calls the series "a complex, even convoluted tale, with so many characters and subplots that a proper summary would far exceed the limits of a Booklist review. . . . There is hardly a piece of northern European heroic literature from which Wolfe doesn't borrow with his usual scholarly flair and in his exquisitely turned prose. . . . Arising from the same sources as Lord of the Rings, THE WIZARD KNIGHT is one of the few fantasies that can justly be compared with it." Kirkus Reviews mentions that "Wolfe likes to spin spiderwebs of plot and counterplot inside his impressively constructed universe." In The Washington Post, Bill Sheehan calls THE WIZARD "a satisfying, wide-ranging novel that contains enough marvels and mysteries (not all of which are resolved or explained) to populate an entire series." Marvels and mysteries, subplots and spiderwebs? If you love THE WIZARD KNIGHT and wish to enjoy it even more, THE WIZARD KNIGHT COMPANION is your perfect guidebook.
