Book excerpt: Excerpt from What Vivisection Has Done for Humanity It is not too much to say that Dr. Keen, of Philadelphia, is universally regarded to-day in the world of surgery as the foremost of living American surgeons. The leading universities and academies of science of the United States, England, France' and Germany have honored him with their degrees and honorary titles, and the published works on surgery, written and edited by him, are accepted as standard authorities by the profession in which he has gained such eminent distinction. Dr. Keen is, therefore, as well, if not better, qualified to to present the advantages of Vivisection as any American writer on the subject - the edi tors of the ladies'-home Journal. Book The Vivisection Question Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Vivisection Question Classic Reprint written by Albert Leffingwell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Vivisection Question I. By Vivisection is meant experimentation of any kind, painful or painless, made upon a living creature for an alleged scientific purpose. II. Within certain limitations and to a certain extent, the utility of animal experimentation makes it justifiable and right. III. The abuses to which the practice is liable are so great, that vivisection should be regulated by law, and placed under the control and supervision of the State. In order to prove need of the legal regulation here advocated, it has been necessary to refer to cruelties and abuses, incident to the practice as now carried on. The revelation of these has induced criticism; but I cannot see how otherwise, there could be adduced any proof of necessity for legal control. In one respect, the task made necessary by controversy on this subject has been exceedingly distasteful. It is by no means a pleasant literary employment to point out the inaccuracies or to demonstrate the blunders made bv men of national repute in their opposition to the regula tion of experimentation. But no fact is more clearly apparent than that too eager laudation of vivisection without control has evoked a carelessness of statement. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vivisection: The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the Royal Commission The Royal Commission countenance Vivisection for teaching purposes when the experiments are performed without pain. No doubt reasons were given to them by professors in favour of this practice, though other teachers thought it unimportant. It would seem hardly wise to familiarise young students with illustrations of mutilated living animals. Such an exhibition is suggestive, to say the least, of an easy way by which to give force to a dilettante evening séance in a private parlour laboratory. With the exception of the above two points, the Royal Commission have consented to all the provisions of the Society's Bill. Book Report of the American Humane Association in Vivisection in America

Download or read book Report of the American Humane Association in Vivisection in America written by American Humane Association and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-09 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the American Humane Association in Vivisection in America: Adopted at Minneapolis, Minn., September 26, 1895 The second view, however, is capable of considerable subdivision. One person may favor vivisection provided it be limited to absolutely painless experiments. Another would not condemn it if the pain were slight, and the possible utility to humanity very great. Four statements of Opinion were carefully formulated, and to these a fifth was finally added, which was sent, however, as hereafter noted, to but very few others than members of the medical profession. But even these could by no means express all the shades of differing Opinion which seem to exist in regard to this subject. Some few persons indeed could find nothing in either statement to endorse or condemn, while others, reading with extreme and careful discrimina tion, indicated by erasures and changes in ph'raseology their variance of Opinion. But that the statements, as drawn, do fairly represent existing Opinions is evinced by the fact, that, without'any erasures or changes, each one received the signatures of men of national reputation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twenty-Seventh Annual Report of the American Anti-Vivisection Society for the Total Abolition of All Vivisectional Experiments on Animals and Other Experiments of a Painful Character, for the Year 1909 T is generally conceded that reports of recording secre taries, abounding as they necessarily must in data and statistics, are only interesting to those already interested. Even with this limitation, however, we can count each year on an increased number of readers, for the roll of the interested grows apace and Nineteen nine has seen the most remarkable addition to their ranks. It is impossible to avoid repetition in these annual records, so the opening paragraphs here are quite similar to those of last year when dealing with the same subjects. First of these is the accounting for office activities. A large - we might almost say, a vast - amount of enlightening literature has been widely distributed during the twelve months just ended, a new and most valuable medium of distribution being the Exhibits, of which we shall speak later. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animal experimentation has been one of the most controversial areas of animal use, mainly due to the intentional harms inflicted upon animals for the sake of hoped-for benefits in humans. Despite this rationale for continued animal experimentation, shortcomings of this practice have become increasingly more apparent and well-documented. However, these limitations are not yet widely known or appreciated, and there is a danger that they may simply be ignored. The 51 experts who have contributed to Animal Experimentation: Working Towards a Paradigm Change critically review current animal use in science, present new and innovative non-animal approaches to address urgent scientific questions, and offer a roadmap towards an animal-free world of science.
