The sabre will be the ordinary Ames blade, of trie present United States pattern, to be issued as sharp as a razor from the factory. It will be worn in a scabbard of simple black or brown leather, kept soft and supple and without any wooden lining. Near the mouth of the scabbard will be an outside sheath, to hold a small, flat tablet of soapstone with a wooden handle to act as a whetstone. The sabre will al ways be drawn slowly and individually before exercise, and returned in the same way after it. It will be worn in a frog at the waistbelt, like the infantry sword, and not slung. In dismounted fighting it will be taken out of this frog and left on the stddle in the same bucket provided for the oarbine when mounted. At every halt after a longmarch, and every evening and morning, the sabre will be drawn and tested. If not sharp enough to cut hairs from the head or shave some ff the bare arm, it must bo carefully whetted until it will do so. Dismounted snries shall never mount guard with sabres drawn. Either they shall carry carbines, leaving the sabre in quarters, or they shall take it from the frog and carry it sheathed, and at a port (vide post). The point, whether bare or sheathed, shall never be allowed to rest on the ground. Inspections of sabres and pistols shall be held daily, to keep both weapons in condition. Officers should constantly impress on their commands the value of sharp sabres which will gash, even in the hands of a child, if kept like razors, and cut men in half at the waist in the hands of soldiers of ordinary strength. ALTHOUGH the sphere of cavalry on the battlefield has undoubtedly been much narrowed, it is a question whether its use in the other operations of a campaign is not likely to be much enlarged in the future. The great power which the new firearms give to the mounted riflemen have increased their effectiveness so materially as to enable them to be usefully employed far oftener than under the old system. The railway, telegraphic, and other communications of an army are so important, and so essential to be preserved, that a force of horsemen are as necessary to guard them as they are useful to threaten and attack those of the enemy. A large force of mounted riflemen, accompanied by a few pieces of artillery, can almost live on the country, and by the rapidity and secrecy of their movements, can avoid and escape large bodies, while, from their armament and fighting capacity, they can either attack smaller forces or defend themselves if assailed. At the opening of a campaign these horsemen should be sent on as outposts or advanced guards. They should be under a general of cavalry, and should be instructed to push boldly on in an impenetrable line, strong but flexible. This belt of horsemen, self-reliant, able to defend or to attack, not to be checked by small parties of infantry under cover, should sweep forward, feeling the whole country on the way, and moving on until the enemy's advanced posts are struck. Once this is done the touch should never be lost. A firm pressure should force back the weak points, a stern resistance should hold in check the strong points, and without much risk, the position and strength of the enemy should be pretty well ascertained. It could not have waged war without them. While the Army’s reliance on draft horses to pull artillery, supply wagons, and field kitchens is now generally acknowledged, D. R. Dorondo’s Riders of the Apocalypse examines the history of the German cavalry, a combat arm that not only survived World War I but also rode to war again in 1939. Though concentrating on the period between 1939 and 1945, the book places that history firmly within the larger context of the mounted arm’s development from the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 to the Third Reich’s surrender. Driven by both internal and external constraints to retain mounted forces after 1918, the German Army effectively did nothing to reduce, much less eliminate, the preponderance of non-mechanized formations during its breakneck expansion under the Nazis after 1933. Instead, politicized command decisions, technical insufficiency, industrial bottlenecks, and, finally, wartime attrition meant that Army leaders were compelled to rely on a steadily growing number of combat horsemen throughout World War II. These horsemen were best represented by the 1st Cavalry Brigade (later Division) which saw combat in Poland, the Netherlands, France, Russia, and Hungary. Their service, however, came to be cruelly dishonored by the horsemen of the 8th Waffen-SS Cavalry Division, a unit whose troopers spent more time killing civilians than fighting enemy soldiers. Throughout the story of these formations, and drawing extensively on both primary and secondary sources, Dorondo shows how the cavalry’s tradition carried on in a German and European world undergoing rapid military industrialization after the mid-nineteenth century. And though Riders of the Apocalypse focuses on the German element of this tradition, it also notes other countries’ continuing (and, in the case of Russia, much more extensive) use of combat horsemen after 1900. However, precisely because the Nazi regime devoted so much effort to portray Germany’s armed forces as fully modern and mechanized, the combat effectiveness of so many German horsemen on the battlefields of Europe until 1945 remains a story that deserves to be more widely known. Dorondo’s work does much to tell that story.
