Book Implications of the California Wildfires for Health Communities and Preparedness

Download or read book Implications of the California Wildfires for Health Communities and Preparedness written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2020-10-01 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: California and other wildfire-prone western states have experienced a substantial increase in the number and intensity of wildfires in recent years. Wildlands and climate experts expect these trends to continue and quite likely to worsen in coming years. Wildfires and other disasters can be particularly devastating for vulnerable communities. Members of these communities tend to experience worse health outcomes from disasters, have fewer resources for responding and rebuilding, and receive less assistance from state, local, and federal agencies. Because burning wood releases particulate matter and other toxicants, the health effects of wildfires extend well beyond burns. In addition, deposition of toxicants in soil and water can result in chronic as well as acute exposures. On June 4-5, 2019, four different entities within the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine held a workshop titled Implications of the California Wildfires for Health, Communities, and Preparedness at the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at the University of California, Davis. The workshop explored the population health, environmental health, emergency preparedness, and health equity consequences of increasingly strong and numerous wildfires, particularly in California. This publication is a summary of the presentations and discussion of the workshop.

Book A Canyon Trilogy

Download or read book A Canyon Trilogy written by Chi Varnado and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The crime fiction novelist presents his first novella, A Lapse of Memory, based on his short story of the same name. When the mafia wants a mark eliminated, they turn to contract killer James Randall, a.k.a. Richard Johnson, and he usually delivers in spades. But Randall is aging and has developed the early stages of Alzheimer's. When a hit goes horribly wrong, he finds himself on the run, pursued by his former employers. Gritty, mesmerizing, A Lapse of Memory excites us with the chase, while also providing a back-story of a time long gone by. Himself in search of a lost past, the emotionally complex Randall is determined to evade his pursuers. But can he any longer differentiate friend from foe? Can he search out the secrets of his past as the present slips away? The novella is ripe with inventive incidents, is evocative of the present as well as the physical atmosphere of the 1950's, and offers a number of interesting characters. As usual in Curry's work, the presence of the sea and the city is keenly felt and connected to the psychological action of the story.

Book excerpt: Hot, dry offshore winds, known as Santa Ana Winds in Southern California, coupled with long-term abnormally dry conditions across the area, set the stage for one of the more costly natural disasters in California history. During late Oct. into early Nov. 2003, 14 wind driven wildfires swept across Southern California. They killed 22 people, destroyed 3,600 homes, charred nearly 740,000 acres of land, & caused more than $2 billion in property damage. Due to the magnitude of this event, the Nat. Weather Service formed a service assessment team to examine the forecast & warning services provided to land managers, fire control personnel, emergency planners, media & the public. The team produced this Service Assessment Report. Illustrations.

Book excerpt: The definitive firsthand account of California’s Camp Fire, the nation’s deadliest wildfire in a century, Paradise is a riveting examination of what went wrong and how to avert future tragedies as the climate crisis unfolds. “A tour de force story of wildfire and a terrifying look at what lies ahead.”—San Francisco Chronicle (Best Books of the Year) On November 8, 2018, the people of Paradise, California, awoke to a mottled gray sky and gusty winds. Soon the Camp Fire was upon them, gobbling an acre a second. Less than two hours after the fire ignited, the town was engulfed in flames, the residents trapped in their homes and cars. By the next morning, eighty-five people were dead. As a reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle, Lizzie Johnson was there as the town of Paradise burned. She saw the smoldering rubble of a historic covered bridge and the beloved Black Bear Diner and she stayed long afterward, visiting shelters, hotels, and makeshift camps. Drawing on years of on-the-ground reporting and reams of public records, including 911 calls and testimony from a grand jury investigation, Johnson provides a minute-by-minute account of the Camp Fire, following residents and first responders as they fight to save themselves and their town. We see a young mother fleeing with her newborn; a school bus full of children in search of an escape route; and a group of paramedics, patients, and nurses trapped in a cul-de-sac, fending off the fire with rakes and hoses. In Paradise, Johnson documents the unfolding tragedy with empathy and nuance. But she also investigates the root causes, from runaway climate change to a deeply flawed alert system to Pacific Gas and Electric’s decades-long neglect of critical infrastructure. A cautionary tale for a new era of megafires, Paradise is the gripping story of a town wiped off the map and the determination of its people to rise again.
