They believed in my ability to use simple words to help many people understand and empathize with those afflicted with this devastating illness. Through sharing and listening to others, I now know that mental illness has no boundaries. In my book, I give glimpses into what it's like to live with mental illness. By the end of my journey, I found my way out with hope and a calm mind. Volunteer and reach out to someone you know who is suffering, visit them and remind them they are not forgotten. When supporting someone with any illness, small actions can have a powerful effect.

Book excerpt: To err is human. Yet most of us go through life assuming (and sometimes insisting) that we are right about nearly everything, from the origins of the universe to how to load the dishwasher. In Being Wrong, journalist Kathryn Schulz explores why we find it so gratifying to be right and so maddening to be mistaken. Drawing on thinkers as varied as Augustine, Darwin, Freud, Gertrude Stein, Alan Greenspan, and Groucho Marx, she shows that error is both a given and a gift—one that can transform our worldviews, our relationships, and ourselves.

Book Talking to Strangers

Download or read book Talking to Strangers written by Malcolm Gladwell and published by Little, Brown. This book was released on 2019-09-10 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malcolm Gladwell, host of the podcast Revisionist History and author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Outliers, offers a powerful examination of our interactions with strangers and why they often go wrong—now with a new afterword by the author. A Best Book of the Year: The Financial Times, Bloomberg, Chicago Tribune, and Detroit Free Press How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to one another that isn’t true? Talking to Strangers is a classically Gladwellian intellectual adventure, a challenging and controversial excursion through history, psychology, and scandals taken straight from the news. He revisits the deceptions of Bernie Madoff, the trial of Amanda Knox, the suicide of Sylvia Plath, the Jerry Sandusky pedophilia scandal at Penn State University, and the death of Sandra Bland—throwing our understanding of these and other stories into doubt. Something is very wrong, Gladwell argues, with the tools and strategies we use to make sense of people we don’t know. And because we don’t know how to talk to strangers, we are inviting conflict and misunderstanding in ways that have a profound effect on our lives and our world. In his first book since his #1 bestseller David and Goliath, Malcolm Gladwell has written a gripping guidebook for troubled times.

Bored to death with the mundane rituals and routines of priestly life, he studies centuries old church policies and doctrines and asks the question....do they line up with biblical doctrine? Thus begins his quest for truth, leading to a life-changing decision that threatens to destroy close and supportive relationships. As if that wasn’t enough, a chance encounter with an African American Protestant female with her own issues, will dramatically reshape the course of their lives and set them on a collision course with their respective families. But his decision to accept the challenge to spearhead an organization of ex-priests explodes into an international initiative and proves to be his boldest move yet. Described as a ‘modern day Martin Luther’ by some, Fr. Vanos and this organization embarks on an extraordinary journey, one that threatens the boundaries of family relations, and ultimately...challenges Rome on an international platform, continuing in the sequel The Silent Majority, (available now at on-line book stores, and www.westbowpress.com.)

Book Factfulness

  • Author : Hans Rosling
  • Publisher : Flatiron Books
  • Release : 2018-04-03
  • ISBN : 125012381X
  • Pages : 353 pages

Download or read book Factfulness written by Hans Rosling and published by Flatiron Books. This book was released on 2018-04-03 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER “One of the most important books I’ve ever read—an indispensable guide to thinking clearly about the world.” – Bill Gates “Hans Rosling tells the story of ‘the secret silent miracle of human progress’ as only he can. But Factfulness does much more than that. It also explains why progress is so often secret and silent and teaches readers how to see it clearly.” —Melinda Gates "Factfulness by Hans Rosling, an outstanding international public health expert, is a hopeful book about the potential for human progress when we work off facts rather than our inherent biases." - Former U.S. President Barack Obama Factfulness: The stress-reducing habit of only carrying opinions for which you have strong supporting facts. When asked simple questions about global trends—what percentage of the world’s population live in poverty; why the world’s population is increasing; how many girls finish school—we systematically get the answers wrong. So wrong that a chimpanzee choosing answers at random will consistently outguess teachers, journalists, Nobel laureates, and investment bankers. In Factfulness, Professor of International Health and global TED phenomenon Hans Rosling, together with his two long-time collaborators, Anna and Ola, offers a radical new explanation of why this happens. They reveal the ten instincts that distort our perspective—from our tendency to divide the world into two camps (usually some version of us and them) to the way we consume media (where fear rules) to how we perceive progress (believing that most things are getting worse). Our problem is that we don’t know what we don’t know, and even our guesses are informed by unconscious and predictable biases. It turns out that the world, for all its imperfections, is in a much better state than we might think. That doesn’t mean there aren’t real concerns. But when we worry about everything all the time instead of embracing a worldview based on facts, we can lose our ability to focus on the things that threaten us most. Inspiring and revelatory, filled with lively anecdotes and moving stories, Factfulness is an urgent and essential book that will change the way you see the world and empower you to respond to the crises and opportunities of the future. --- “This book is my last battle in my life-long mission to fight devastating ignorance...Previously I armed myself with huge data sets, eye-opening software, an energetic learning style and a Swedish bayonet for sword-swallowing. It wasn’t enough. But I hope this book will be.” Hans Rosling, February 2017.

Download or read book Don t Be a Jerk written by Brad Warner and published by New World Library. This book was released on 2016-02-15 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Shōbōgenzō (The Treasury of the True Dharma Eye) is a revered eight-hundred-year-old Zen Buddhism classic written by the Japanese monk Eihei Dōgen. Despite the timeless wisdom of his teachings, many consider the book difficult to understand and daunting to read. In Don’t Be a Jerk, Zen priest and bestselling author Brad Warner, through accessible paraphrasing and incisive commentary, applies Dōgen’s teachings to modern times. While entertaining and sometimes irreverent, Warner is also an astute scholar who sees in Dōgen very modern psychological concepts, as well as insights on such topics as feminism and reincarnation. Warner even shows that Dōgen offered a “Middle Way” in the currently raging debate between science and religion. For curious readers worried that Dōgen’s teachings are too philosophically opaque, Don’t Be a Jerk is hilarious, understandable, and wise.

Book excerpt: Aren and his fellow angels stopped Lucifer and the angels who chose to follow him from invading Heaven. The Father then cast them into the deepest and darkest part of the Earth. In the mean time, God the Father restored the Earth and built a garden called Eden. He has assigned different angels to do different tasks. One of the tasks is to take care of the beings the Father created. He calls them humans. Lucifer managed to get to the Earth's surface. He made his way to where the humans live, the garden of Eden. He leads the humans away from God the Father and as a result, they get banished from the garden. This is when they the angels serving the Father discover Kryvo, one of the angels who fought against Lucifer, has gone missing. God the Father gives Aren a mission: find Kryvo and bring him back to Heaven. This mission will force Aren to examine the real motivation behind serving the Father as well as answering an important question: did he pick the wrong side in the conflict between Lucifer and God the Father?
