Book What People Believe When They Say That People Believe

Download or read book What People Believe When They Say That People Believe written by Todd Jones and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2010-10-26 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In modern life, we often hear people say things like, 'Catholics don't believe in using birth control.' There are many reasons that we want to know what groups of people (such as Catholics) are thinking and doing. But it's hard to understand which social situations are being described by such statements. It's also difficult to understand what speakers believe when they make such statements (even when the speakers are social scientists.) In this work, cognitive scientist and philosopher Todd Jones looks at the different things that social scientists and ordinary speakers mean when they make statements ascribing beliefs or actions to groups, rather than individuals. Such statements are often denigrated as mere stereotypes or generalizations. Yet they are also used by people to strategize about what actions to take, and even for social scientific explanations. In this work, Jones takes a detailed look at the different things these kinds of statements about groups can mean, and the various social structures they correspond to. He also looks at how such statements can and can't be used to successfully explain the behavior of individuals or groups. While many people broadly dismiss such statements about groups, Jones gives a careful discussion of the problems and possibilities such statements have.

Book 50 Popular Beliefs That People Think Are True

Download or read book 50 Popular Beliefs That People Think Are True written by Guy P. Harrison and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on 2012-01-03 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “What would it take to create a world in which fantasy is not confused for fact and public policy is based on objective reality?" asks Neil deGrasse Tyson, science popularizer and author of Astrophysics for People in a Hurry. "I don't know for sure. But a good place to start would be for everyone on earth to read this book." Maybe you know someone who swears by the reliability of psychics or who is in regular contact with angels. Or perhaps you're trying to find a nice way of dissuading someone from wasting money on a homeopathy cure. Or you met someone at a party who insisted the Holocaust never happened or that no one ever walked on the moon. How do you find a gently persuasive way of steering people away from unfounded beliefs, bogus cures, conspiracy theories, and the like? This down-to-earth, entertaining exploration of commonly held extraordinary claims will help you set the record straight. The author, a veteran journalist, has not only surveyed a vast body of literature, but has also interviewed leading scientists, explored "the most haunted house in America," frolicked in the inviting waters of the Bermuda Triangle, and even talked to a "contrite Roswell alien." He is not out simply to debunk unfounded beliefs. Wherever possible, he presents alternative scientific explanations, which in most cases are even more fascinating than the wildest speculation. For example, stories about UFOs and alien abductions lack good evidence, but science gives us plenty of reasons to keep exploring outer space for evidence that life exists elsewhere in the vast universe. The proof for Bigfoot or the Loch Ness Monster may be nonexistent, but scientists are regularly discovering new species, some of which are truly stranger than fiction. Stressing the excitement of scientific discovery and the legitimate mysteries and wonder inherent in reality, this book invites readers to share the joys of rational thinking and the skeptical approach to evaluating our extraordinary world.

Book Do You Really Believe What You Say You Believe

Download or read book Do You Really Believe What You Say You Believe written by Rodney Hobson and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2019-02-21 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Christian's growth is dependent on what they say they know regarding Christ and what they say they believe about Christ and the application of those beliefs in their circumstances. The Bible is filled with examples of men and women who believed in God and Christ, yet struggled to believe what they heard, read, and said they believed. Abraham and Sarah, Zechariah, Jesus disciples, Paul, and others had issues of believing what they heard or what was written in scripture. What does it mean when a person says, "I believe in God?" How does unbelief affect what a Christian believes? Does what a person believes limit their ability to produce the truths of Christ and its results in their lives? This book is written to explore the challenges of believing the Word of God and learning how to produce the results of those beliefs in their lives.

We must be skeptical of these beliefs, and not accept them as real or true just because they feel true. #2 Paranormal and supernatural beliefs, which are things that exist or occur outside the natural world, are not necessarily tied to intelligence or education. Most people in the United States and throughout the world are supernatural/paranormal believers. #3 It is our duty as humans to speak out against irrational belief, as it is a chronic crisis that burdens us century after century. #4 It is important to be skeptical of claims, and to always remember that the burden of proof is on those who make the claim. Be on guard against stealth beliefs, which are partial truths that swell to include paranormal elements once you let them inside your head.

This book was released on 2009-11-06 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To Believe or not To Believe: The Social and Neurological Consequences of Belief Systems An in-depth look at how we limit our conscious evolution by maintaining rigid belief systems that no longer serve us and are lacking any logic or reason considering today’s advances in physics, neuroscience, and recent archaeological fi nds. Neuroscience has shown that people who meditate have much higher brain coherence than people who don’t; this balance is thought to be the gateway for spiritual enlightenment, which could be viewed as a bioneurological event. Through a better understanding of reality and our relationship to it, humankind will be able to see through the veils of illusion that keep us in constant confl ict with one another. Included are interviews with Dr. Bruce Lipton, Dr. Joe Dispenza, Dr. Andrew Newberg, Fred Alan Wolf, Neale Donald Walsch, Lynne McTaggart, Gary Zukav, Amit Goswami, Shakti Gawain, Dan Millman, Byron Katie, Alberto Villoldo, PhD, Drunvalo Melchizedek, Peter Russell, Timothy Freke, and Rollin McCraty of HeartMath. Book Why We Believe What We Believe

Download or read book Why We Believe What We Believe written by Andrew Newberg and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2006-09-12 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WHY DO YOU BELIEVE THE THINGS YOU BELIEVE? Do you remember events differently from how they really happened? Where do your superstitions come from? How do morals evolve? Why are some people religious and others nonreligious? Everyone has thoughts and questions like these, and now Andrew Newberg and Mark Waldman expose, for the first time, how our complex views emerge from the neural activities of the brain. Bridging science, psychology, and religion, they demonstrate, in simple terminology, how the brain perceives reality and transforms it into an extraordinary range of personal, ethical, and creative premises that we use to build meaning, value, spirituality, and truth into our lives. When you come to understand this remarkable process, it will change forever the way you look at the world and yourself. Supported by groundbreaking research, including brain scans of people as they pray, meditate, and even speak in tongues, Newberg and Waldman propose a new model for how deep convictions emerge and influence our lives. You will even glimpse how the mind of an atheist works when contemplating God.Using personal stories, moral paradoxes, and optical illusions, the authors demonstrate how our brains construct our fondest assumptions about reality, offering recommendations for exercising your most important muscle in order to develop a more life-affirming, flexible range of attitudes. You'll discover how to: Recognize when your beliefs are altered by others Guard against mental traps and prejudicial thinking Distinguish between destructive and constructive beliefs Cultivate spiritual and ethical ideals Ultimately, we must always return to our beliefs. From the ordinary to the extraordinary, they give meaning to the mysteries of life, providing us with our individual uniqueness and the ability to fill our lives with joy. Most important, though, they give us inspiration and hope, beacons to guide us through the light and dark corners of the soul

Has a conspiracy theory ever turned out to be true? The Psychology of Conspiracy Theories debunks the myth that conspiracy theories are a modern phenomenon, exploring their broad social contexts, from politics to the workplace. The book explains why some people are more susceptible to these beliefs than others and how they are produced by recognizable and predictable psychological processes. Download or read book Know What You Believe written by Team Impact Christian University and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-01-22 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is very important to know what we mean when we say "I believe". Especially when we say, "I believe in God." How does that differ from the heathen viewpoint or the viewpoint of other faiths? What do they mean when they say, "We believe in God"? How does that differ from our declaration? It is vital to know WHAT we believe and why we believe it so that we are not left at the mercy of cults and human philosophy. It is not enough just to declare, "I believe in God" and then to be selective about WHAT we believe. We have to believe the whole counsel of God as revealed in the Holy Bible. "There is only one God, brethren, and we learn about Him only from sacred Scriptures. It is, therefore, our duty to become acquainted with what Scripture proclaims and to investigate it's teaching thoroughly. The Early Church believed this and penned a brief statement of faith called "THE APOSTLES' CREED" during the 6th Century AD. It is an excellent summary of the Christian faith based on the scriptures in a series of twelve short statements of faith. Its purpose is to ground believers in their faith. Written statements of faith became necessary in the early days of the church because of the rise of heresies as people made an attempt to "explain" God. Baptism candidates were asked to accept the simple rule of faith as their personal confession. These creeds are not a formula, but a confession of faith declared as an expression of faith in an act of commitment to God and the surrender of the will and mind to Biblical doctrine. God is not looking for "feathery" Christians, blown about by every wind of doctrine", at the mercy of men and their philosophies. He requires that we be firmly anchored in Christ. Our faith is firmly based on a solid, well-laid foundation - The Word of God. Christians are required to read the Bible, think about and meditate on its great truths and apply them in our lives. A firm, unshakeable faith will be the result, causing us to become PILLARS in the Temple of our God. A tree that is constantly being replanted never thrives. "He can no more grow in Godliness, who is unsettled, than a bone can grow in a body out of joint" - Matthew Henry. The Bible is our anchor, our lamp, and powerful armor to protect us against the deceitful doctrines of demons. It tells us the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth about God. It is essential that we believe the record because God will only accept worship that is in accord with His Will and Word. Read the story of David and the Ark in 2 Samuel 6:6,7 (compare 1 Chronicles 13:9,10). God said: "Do not touch the Ark". It seemed like the right thing to do in the circumstances, but it was not acceptable to God. We have to believe what God says about Himself and about His Will. We do not have to understand, only believe and obey. The Apostles' Creed was written to ground Christians in their faith An Early Church statement of faith is based on Peter's confession recorded in Matthew 16:16 "Simon Peter answered and said, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." Specifically written to ground believers in their faith, it reads as follows: 1. I believe in God the Father Almighty; Maker of heaven and earth. 2. And in Jesus Christ His only (begotten) Son our Lord; 3. Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary; 4. Suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; 5. The third day He rose from the dead; 6. He ascended into heaven; and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; 7. From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead; 8. I believe in the Holy Ghost; 9. The holy catholic (universal) church; the communion of saints; 10. The forgiveness of sins; 11. The resurrection of the body (flesh); 12. And the life everlasting.

Book A Faith for Skeptics

Download or read book A Faith for Skeptics written by John H. Heidt and published by . This book was released on 2003-10 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Setting Yourself Free to Believe We do not live in an age of disbelief but in an age of doubt. After many years in the parish ministry, John H. Heidt has found that few people do not have some kind of belief in God. But a great many people—inside and outside the church—are uneasy about believing too much or too strongly. They take all sorts of other things in life for granted, but when it comes to religion they are skeptics. This book is written for all those who would like to believe in something definite but are afraid to do so. It does not try to argue anyone into belief, but sets out to convince the reader that it is all right to believe—and specifically to believe in the traditional teachings of Christianity.

Book excerpt: This second book of the Real Magic series continues to explore the ancient Hermetic Teachings as “A mental art—the art of using consciousness itself as the tool for creating changes in consciousness.” What does the Hermetic axiom “as above, so below” really mean? The relationship between macrocosm (above) and microcosm (below) is the key to the Hermetic Teachings. Macrocosm refers to the Eternal Reality of Light; the realm of God. Microcosm is its reflection; a fragmentation of Light; the world of human existence and human ego. The core of the Hermetic Teachings for centuries has been focused on transforming the fragmented body of Light in human consciousness and uniting below with above.
