Book Human Dimensions of the Saskatchewan Forest Habitat Project

Download or read book Human Dimensions of the Saskatchewan Forest Habitat Project written by Bonita Lynn McFarlane and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Saskatchewan Forest Habitat Project (SFHP) was undertaken to help integrate timber and wildlife management objectives into forest management practices in the Weyerhaeuser Saskatchewan Limited Forest Management License Agreement (FMLA) area. Habitat supply models, which use the concept of indicator species, were developed for six of the approximately 250 species of birds and mammals found in the FMLA area. An important component of assessing the viability of the SFHP is determining its impacts on stakeholders. A study was undertaken to examine two user groups (wildlife viewers and moose hunters), their use of the FMLA area, and the potential impact of habitat supply models on their activities. Mail surveys were used to collect information on wildlife use, attitudes toward wildlife, and viewing and hunting preferences. Both groups were similar in terms of some socioeconomic characteristics, attitudes toward wildlife, and reasons for participating, but differed in terms of the factors that detracted from their wildlife experiences. The Weyerhaeuser FMLA area is important for viewing and hunting activities. However, simply managing for species and their habitat may not meet the demands of these users. Incorporating an experience-based management framework with habitat supply models may be necessary to meet their needs.

Book The Capacity for Wonder

Download or read book The Capacity for Wonder written by William Lowry and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The national parks of North America are great public treasures, visited by 300 million people each year. Set aside to be kept in relatively natural condition, these remarkable places of forests, rivers, mountains, and wildlife still inspire our "capacity for wonder." Today, however, the parks are threatened by increasingly difficult problems from both inside and outside their borders. This book, enriched with personal anecdotes of the author's trips throughout the parks of North America, examines changes in the park services of the United States and Canada over the past fifteen years. William Lowry describes the many challenges facing the parks—such as rising crime, tourism, and overcrowding, pollution, eroding funding for environmental research, and the contentious debate over preservation versus use—and the abilities of the agencies to deal with them. The Capacity for Wonder provides a revealing comparison of the U.S. National Park Service (NPS) and the Canadian Parks Service (CPS). The author explains that, while the services are similar in many ways, the priorities of these two agencies have changed dramatically in recent years. Lowry shows how increasing conflicts over agency goals and decreasing institutional support have make the NPS vulnerable to interagency disputes, reluctant to take any risks in its operations, and extremely responsive to political pressures. As a result, U.S. national parks are now managed mainly to serve political purposes. Lowry illustrates how in the 1980s politicians pushed the NPS to expand private uses of national parks through development, timber harvesting, grazing, and mining, while environmental groups push the NPS in the other direction. Over the same period, the CPS enjoyed a clarification of goals and increased institutional supports. As a result, the CPS has been able to decentralize its structure, empower its employees, and renew its commitment to preservation. Lowry considers several proposals to change the institutions governing the parks. His own recommendations are more in line with proposals to revitalize public agencies than with those that suggest replacing them with private enterprise, state agencies, or endowment boards. Lowry concludes that preserving nature should be the primary, explicit goal of the park services, and he calls for a stronger commitment to that goal in the United States.

Book Field Guide to the Ecosites of Saskatchewan s Provincial Forests

Download or read book Field Guide to the Ecosites of Saskatchewan s Provincial Forests written by M. S. McLaughlan and published by . This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The forest ecosystems of Saskatchewan are represented at the site level with 81 ecosites that span Saskatchewan's four ecozones: Taiga Shield, Boreal Shield, Boreal Plain and Prairie. Field sampling provided the raw data upon which the ecosite classification was built. Nearly 1700 semi-permanent relevés were established in 69 of the province's 80 forested ecodistricts. Each relevé provided information about the cover-abundance and growth form of each plant encountered, forest mensuration data, and soil and site characteristics. The ecosite classification provides summaries of the site attributes for each ecosite within the four ecozones; it also illustrates the relationship among the ecosites, within an ecozone, through a two-way matrix of moisture and species richness values. This ecosystem classification facilitates better integration of forest management disciplines by providing a common ecosystem language that forms an explicit operational framework for resource managers. Brief descriptions and ecological interpretations are also provided for each ecosite and usually include significant features and/or a statement about the possible successional trajectory for the ecosite in the absence and presence of disturbance."--Document.

Book Boreal Forests and Global Change

Download or read book Boreal Forests and Global Change written by Michael J. Apps and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 565 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boreal forests form Earth's largest terrestrial biome. They are rich in ecosystem and landscape diversity, though characterized by relatively few plant species, as compared to other forested regions. The long term viability and sustainability of boreal forests is influenced by many factors. They are subject to interruptions at intervals by large-scale natural disturbances, and increasingly by human activities. Boreal ecosystem development is typically a slow process; hence rapid changes in the global environment may invoke complex responses. Many industrial nations border, or lie within, boreal regions, deriving much of their economic wealth and culture from the forests. The response of boreal forests to changes in the global environment - whether caused by direct human activity or by indirect changes such as the anticipated changes in climate - are therefore of considerable international interest, both for their policy implications and their scientific challenges. This book which contains almost 50 peer-reviewed papers from a world-wide group of experts assembled under the auspices of IBFRA, the International Boreal Forest Research Association, covers topics which will stimulate further research and the development of constructive policies for improved management and conservation of global boreal forest resources.
