Book What Is Religion And Other New Articles and Letters Classic Reprint

Download or read book What Is Religion And Other New Articles and Letters Classic Reprint written by Lyof N. Tolstoi and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-20 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from What Is Religion? And Other New Articles and Letters Religion 18 studied by this class of men not as some thing which we know through our inner experience, but as an external phenomenon, a disease as it were to which some people are subject, and which we can understand only in its external symptoms. Religion, according to some of these men, has sprung from the spiritualization of all the phenomena of nature (animism). According to others, from the idea of the possibility of communicating with departed ancestors. According to others again, from the fear of the powers of nature. And as science has proved - the scientists of our day further argue - that trees and stone cannot be animated, and deceased ancestors are no longer con scious of what the living do, and the phenomena of nature are explicable by natural causes, therefore the necessity for religion and for all those restraints which people impose upon themselves as the result of religious beliefs has disappeared. In the opinion of scientists there once existed a period of unenlightenment - the religious period. This was outlived by mankind long ago, but occasional atavistic symptoms remain. Then there came the metaphysical period, which also has been outlived. And now, we, the enlightened genera tions, live in the scientific period, - of positive science, - which replaces religion and leads mankind to a lofty degree of development which it could never have attained whilst it submitted to superstitious religious teaching. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from What Is Religion? And Other New Articles and Letters Always in all human societies, at a certain period of their existence a time comes when their religion begins to diverge from its fundamental meaning, then diverges more and more, loses this fundamental meaning, and finally crystallizes into permanently established forms; - when its influence upon the life of men grows weaker and weaker. At such periods, the educated minority, though no longer believing in the existing religious teaching, still pretend to believe, finding this religion necessary for holding the masses in the established order of life; whilst the masses, although adhering by the force of inertia to the established religion, are no longer guided in their lives by religious demands, but only by popular customs and state laws. So it has been, many times, in many human communities. But what is now taking place in our Christian Society has never before occurred. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Articles of Religion: As Amended, Supplemented, and Explained Of course everybody knows that the creed is not a substitute for the Bible. It is an aid, a guide in the study of the Scriptures, just as a textbook is a guide in the study 'of nature. The Book is the ultimate authority in religious truth, just as nature is the final source of information concerning her secrets. The utility, not to sav necessity, of a complete statement of the articles of faith must be too obvious for doubt. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New and True Religion What folly to waste our time and cudgel our brains over matters of speculative belief, when we may be sure that He will dispose of us according to His ideas, and not according to ours! And what blasphemy to attempt to measure His designs with our puny intellects! Book Religion Theology and Morals Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-07-23 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religion, Theology and Morals, Vol. 1 of 2 Materials for this work have been abundant too abun dant for easy selection. Mr. Scott wrote prolifically on the many branches of the general subject of this collection. The work of elimination has been a long one even longer than the work of collecting the articles. Many of Mr. Scott's best articles are put aside, because repetitive of others. The ones herein chosen seem the most expressive of the Editor's mind and the most permanent in their subject matter. The com piler has taken few or no liberties with the text. It was found necessary to change the headings of most of the articles, so as to make them accord with the subject arrangement. Fre quently, passages have been eliminated that were repetitiveof other parts of the text. For it will be borne in mind that Mr. Scott wrote day by day, in relation to current matters, without thought that his work would be incorporated in a posthumous book. Had he written according to the plan of a book, he would have followed a consistent development of his theme, that now cannot be fully attained; yet we believe the arrangement will be considered by readers as an orderly and satisfactory sequence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Articles of Religion: To Which Is Added a Series of Documents, From A. D. 1536 to A. D. 1615; Together With Illustrations From Contemporary Sources HE SE Chapters are intended to supply a want which has been long and keenly felt by Theo logical Students both at home and in far-distant branches of the Anglican Communion. The idea of undertaking such a work is traceable to suggestions of the late Archbishop Laurence, who complained that while the doctrine Of the Articles, abstractedly considered, was evolved and harmonized in a suc cession of able treatises, no regular attempt was made in any Of those treatises to illustrate the framing of the Formulary itself, by placing 'it distinctly in connection with the kindred publications of an earlier and later date, and by expounding it as the peculiar product and reflection Of the Befor mation-movement. Book Worship and Order Classic Reprint

Download or read book Worship and Order Classic Reprint written by A. J. B. Beresford Hope and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Worship and Order I have all my life been an interested student of ecclesiastical and ecclesiological questions, so I ventured to publish in the quiet days of 1861 a book upon 'the English Cathedral of the Nineteenth Century, ' considered both as abuilding and as an - institution, and in 1874, at a time of great excitement, to bring out 'worship in the Church of England.' But I had been both before and after these dates, and down to the present day, a writer on the class of questions with which those books are concerned, as well in shorter articles and letters to newspapers, as in essays of the longer sort contri buted to reviews, and in papers read at the annual Church Congresses. The belief had grown up in my mind that the course of events was calling upon me to supplement my former books -with further matter, brought together in the solid shape of a volume. So upon turning back to the various essays which I had published, some with and others without my name, I satisfied myself that by grouping a selection of Congress papers and longer review-articles with regard to their subjects more than to their chronology, I could construct in a somewhat consecutive form a collection which should connect and supplement my former publications. Book The Foundations of Religion Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Foundations of Religion Classic Reprint written by Stanley A. Cook and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Foundations of Religion This little book is based upon the application of psycho logy and psychological methods to the comparative and historical study of religions and religious material. No writer on the subject of Religion can avoid what to every reader will be sins of commission and sins of omission. He can only write as the subject presents itself to him at the time, with the recognition that a less imperfect knowledge and a greater attention to the work of others would have increased whatever value his own work may have. Moreover, in his desire to em phasize certain points that seem to him essential, he is doubtless ignoring or dealing too inadequately with points that to others may seem more essential. This little book aims merely at introducing the reader to certain fundamental aspects of the vast subject of Religion; it does not concern itself with the value of any particular religion, or with what may be called the Foundations of Theology. It seeks to deal with the subject quite generally, though, it is hoped, in a way that may interest and stimulate. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religion and Science: The Letters of Alpha on the Influence of Spirit Upon Imponderable The following pages, mostly compiled from the letters Of Alpha, written for the Boston Daily Transcript, and quotations from distinguished writers upon the subjects therein treated, are intended to place before the world, in a concise form, some of the many logical arguments easily understood by the common mind, against the advance ment of Atheism apparent in late scientific teachings. The intention of the author is further to Show that life forces in matter may be accounted for much earlier than the present claims of scientists, even Without giving them separate independence of' motion, or a conscious exist ence, except through spirit emanating from Deity. In the choice Of quotations the author has abstained from the use of sectarian dogmas, and to a certain extent has brought in the expressed views of different writers of many religious denominations, Who speak for themselves. The arguments are intended, so far as they go, to Show that Material as well as Mental and Social Science, is dependent upon spirit for its active creative force, and that the latter originates with God alone; that illustra tive Science, as taught at the present day, when properly demonstrated, by no means disproves the immortality of the soul, its accountability to God, or the necessities of a religious life, but on the contrary in all its lessons points to a perfect harmony between Religion and Science, and a.
