Book What Is Artificial Intelligence A Conversation Between An Ai Engineer And A Humanities Researcher

Download or read book What Is Artificial Intelligence A Conversation Between An Ai Engineer And A Humanities Researcher written by Suman Gupta and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2020-06-22 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'A light-hearted, but engaging conversation about one of the key technologies of our age.I recommend this book to anyone interested in the broader issues around Artificial Intelligence.'Richard HartleyAustralian National University, Australia This book engages with the title question: what is artificial intelligence (AI)? Instead of reiterating received definitions or surveying the field from a disciplinary perspective, the question is engaged here by putting two standpoints into conversation. The standpoints are different in their disciplinary groundings — i.e. technology and the humanities — and also in their approaches — i.e. applied and conceptual. Peter is an AI engineer: his approach is in terms of how to make AI work. Suman is a humanities researcher: his approach is in terms of what people and academics mean when they say 'AI'.A coherent argument, if not a consensus, develops by putting the two standpoints into conversation. The conversation is presented in 32 short chapters, in turn by Suman and Peter. There are two parts: Part 1, Questioning AI, and Part 2, AI and Government Policy. The first part covers issues such as the meaning of intelligence, automation, evolution, artificial and language. It outlines some of the processes through which these concepts may be technologically grounded as AI. The second part addresses policy considerations that underpin the development of AI and responds to the consequences. Themes taken up here include: rights and responsibilities; data usage and state-level strategies in the USA, UK and China; unemployment and policy futures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first decades of the new century shake old certainties. In a whirlwind of profound changes, do we have more history or less? Does history overwhelm us in all domains of life or is historical understanding in yet another crisis? The answers do not come easily. The recent demise of humanities education, the technological alterations of our social lifeworlds and the human condition, the anthropogenic changes in the Earth system, the growing sense of memory, trauma and historical injustice as alternative approaches to the past, seem to entail contradictions and complexities that do not fit very well with our existing notions of historical understanding. Historical thought as we know it is facing manifold challenges, and we struggle to grasp a larger picture that could encompass them. Boasting a range of contributions from leading scholars, this volume attempts just that. In an innovative collection of short essays, Historical Understanding explores the current shape of historical understanding today, by surveying a variety of historical relations to the past, present, and future in the face of socio-political, ecological and technological upheavals. This book is an invaluable research tool for students and researchers alike, presenting a kaleidoscope-like overview of manifold new ways which we navigate “historically” in coping with present-day challenges, both in wider society and in historiography

Book Beyond Artificial Intelligence

Download or read book Beyond Artificial Intelligence written by Jan Romportl and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-08-11 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an edited collection of chapters based on the papers presented at the conference “Beyond AI: Artificial Dreams” held in Pilsen in November 2012. The aim of the conference was to question deep-rooted ideas of artificial intelligence and cast critical reflection on methods standing at its foundations. Artificial Dreams epitomize our controversial quest for non-biological intelligence and therefore the contributors of this book tried to fully exploit such a controversy in their respective chapters, which resulted in an interdisciplinary dialogue between experts from engineering, natural sciences and humanities. While pursuing the Artificial Dreams, it has become clear that it is still more and more difficult to draw a clear divide between human and machine. And therefore this book tries to portrait such an image of what lies beyond artificial intelligence: we can see the disappearing human-machine divide, a very important phenomenon of nowadays technological society, the phenomenon which is often uncritically praised, or hypocritically condemned. And so this phenomenon found its place in the subtitle of the whole volume as well as in the title of the chapter of Kevin Warwick, one of the keynote speakers at “Beyond AI: Artificial Dreams”.

Book Beyond Artificial Intelligence

Download or read book Beyond Artificial Intelligence written by Jozef Kelemen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-10-20 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Products of modern artificial intelligence (AI) have mostly been formed by the views, opinions and goals of the “insiders”, i.e. people usually with engineering background who are driven by the force that can be metaphorically described as the pursuit of the craft of Hephaestus. However, since the present-day technology allows for tighter and tighter mergence of the “natural” everyday human life with machines of immense complexity, the responsible reaction of the scientific community should be based on cautious reflection of what really lies beyond AI, i.e. on the frontiers where the tumultuous ever-growing and ever-changing cloud of AI touches the rest of the world. The chapters of this boo are based on the selected subset of the presentations that were delivered by their respective authors at the conference “Beyond AI: Interdisciplinary Aspects of Artificial Intelligence” held in Pilsen in December 2011. From its very definition, the reflection of the phenomena that lie beyond AI must be inherently interdisciplinary. And so is this book: all the authors took part in a mutual transdisciplinary dialogue after explaining their views on AI not only to a narrow selection of their usual close peers with the same specialisation, but to a much broader audience of various experts from AI engineering, natural sciences, humanities and philosophy. The chapters of this book thus reflect results of such a dialogue.

Book excerpt: The AI Schism: Navigating the Divide Between Hope and Fear CONVERSATIONAL CHAT INFORMATIVE BOOK By Bard AI and Abebe Gebre Woldemariam A compelling and thought-provoking exploration of the future of artificial intelligence (AI) and the potential risks and benefits it poses to humanity. In the ever-evolving world of technology, artificial intelligence (AI) stands as a transformative force, poised to revolutionize industries, enhance human capabilities, and tackle global challenges. Yet, amidst its immense promise, AI also harbors the potential to pose an existential threat to humanity. The AI Schism: Navigating the Divide Between Hope and Fear delves into the heart of this complex and contentious debate, exploring the two opposing views on the future of AI. On one side, proponents of "strong AI" or "superintelligence" believe that AI will eventually surpass human intelligence, becoming capable of independent thought and action, potentially leading to unforeseen and uncontrollable consequences. On the other side, proponents of "weak AI" or "narrow AI" argue that AI will never truly achieve human-level intelligence, remaining a powerful tool that can be used for good or evil, depending on the intentions and actions of its creators. The book examines the arguments of both sides, drawing upon insights from leading AI researchers, philosophers, and policymakers. It highlights the potential dangers of AI, such as the development of autonomous weapons systems and the risk of unintended consequences arising from increasingly complex AI systems. At the same time, it also explores the immense potential benefits of AI, including its ability to revolutionize healthcare, address climate change, and enhance human productivity. The AI Schism advocates for a balanced approach to AI development, one that acknowledges both the risks and rewards. It calls for open dialogue, transparent research, and robust ethical frameworks to ensure that AI remains a force for good and does not pose an existential threat to humanity. Key takeaways from the book: Artificial intelligence (AI) holds immense promise for revolutionizing industries, enhancing human capabilities, and tackling global challenges. However, AI also harbors the potential to pose an existential threat to humanity, if not carefully developed and controlled. The two opposing views on the future of AI are "strong AI" or "superintelligence" and "weak AI" or "narrow AI." Strong AI proponents believe that AI will eventually surpass human intelligence, while weak AI proponents believe that AI will never achieve human-level intelligence. The book advocates for a balanced approach to AI development, one that acknowledges both the risks and rewards. Open dialogue, transparent research, and robust ethical frameworks are essential to ensure that AI remains a force for good. The AI Schism: Navigating the Divide Between Hope and Fear is a timely and essential read for anyone interested in the future of AI and its impact on humanity. • ISBN : 1950665135
  • Pages : 249 pages

Download or read book T Minus AI written by Michael Kanaan and published by BenBella Books. This book was released on 2020-08-25 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Late in 2017, the global significance of the conversation about artificial intelligence (AI) changed forever. China put the world on alert when it released a plan to dominate all aspects of AI across the planet. Only weeks later, Vladimir Putin raised a Russian red flag in response by declaring AI the future for all humankind, and proclaiming that, "Whoever becomes the leader in this sphere will become the ruler of the world." The race was on. Consistent with their unique national agendas, countries throughout the world began plotting their paths and hurrying their pace. Now, not long after, the race has become a sprint. Despite everything at stake, to most of us AI remains shrouded by a cloud of mystery and misunderstanding. Hidden behind complicated and technical jargon and confused by fantastical depictions of science fiction, the modern realities of AI and its profound implications are hard to decipher, but crucial to recognize. In T-Minus AI: Humanity's Countdown to Artificial Intelligence and the New Pursuit of Global Power, author Michael Kanaan explains AI from a human-oriented perspective we can all finally understand. A recognized national expert and the U.S. Air Force's first Chairperson for Artificial Intelligence, Kanaan weaves a compelling new view on our history of innovation and technology to masterfully explain what each of us should know about modern computing, AI, and machine learning. Kanaan also dives into the global implications of AI by illuminating the cultural and national vulnerabilities already exposed and the pressing issues now squarely on the table. AI has already become China's all-purpose tool to impose its authoritarian influence around the world. Russia, playing catch up, is weaponizing AI through its military systems and now infamous, aggressive efforts to disrupt democracy by whatever disinformation means possible. America and like-minded nations are awakening to these new realities—and the paths they're electing to follow echo loudly the political foundations and, in most cases, the moral imperatives upon which they were formed. As we march toward a future far different than ever imagined, T-Minus AI is fascinating and crucially well-timed. It leaves the fiction behind, paints the alarming implications of AI for what they actually are, and calls for unified action to protect fundamental human rights and dignities for all.

Book excerpt: Artificial intelligence is part of our daily lives. How can we address its limitations and guide its use for the benefit of communities worldwide? Artificial intelligence (AI) has evolved from an experimental computer algorithm used by academic researchers to a commercially reliable method of sifting through large sets of data that detect patterns not readily apparent through more rudimentary search tools. As a result, AI-based programs are helping doctors make more informed decisions about patient care, city planners align roads and highways to reduce traffic congestion with better efficiency, and merchants scan financial transactions to quickly flag suspicious purchases. But as AI applications grow, concerns have increased, too, including worries about applications that amplify existing biases in business practices and about the safety of self-driving vehicles. In Can We Trust AI?, Dr. Rama Chellappa, a researcher and innovator with 40 years in the field, recounts the evolution of AI, its current uses, and how it will drive industries and shape lives in the future. Leading AI researchers, thought leaders, and entrepreneurs contribute their expertise as well on how AI works, what we can expect from it, and how it can be harnessed to make our lives not only safer and more convenient but also more equitable. Can We Trust AI? is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the potential—and pitfalls—of artificial intelligence. The book features: • an exploration of AI's origins during the post–World War II era through the computer revolution of the 1960s and 1970s, and its explosion among technology firms since 2012; • highlights of innovative ways that AI can diagnose medical conditions more quickly and accurately; • explanations of how the combination of AI and robotics is changing how we drive; and • interviews with leading AI researchers who are pushing the boundaries of AI for the world's benefit and working to make its applications safer and more just. Book Reflections on Artificial Intelligence for Humanity

Download or read book Reflections on Artificial Intelligence for Humanity written by Bertrand Braunschweig and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-02-06 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We already observe the positive effects of AI in almost every field, and foresee its potential to help address our sustainable development goals and the urgent challenges for the preservation of the environment. We also perceive that the risks related to the safety, security, confidentiality, and fairness of AI systems, the threats to free will of possibly manipulative systems, as well as the impact of AI on the economy, employment, human rights, equality, diversity, inclusion, and social cohesion need to be better assessed. The development and use of AI must be guided by principles of social cohesion, environmental sustainability, resource sharing, and inclusion. It has to integrate human rights, and social, cultural, and ethical values of democracy. It requires continued education and training as well as continual assessment of its effects through social deliberation. The “Reflections on AI for Humanity” proposed in this book develop the following issues and sketch approaches for addressing them: How can we ensure the security requirements of critical applications and the safety and confidentiality of data communication and processing? What techniques and regulations for the validation, certification, and audit of AI tools are needed to develop confidence in AI? How can we identify and overcome biases in algorithms? How do we design systems that respect essential human values, ensuring moral equality and inclusion? What kinds of governance mechanisms are needed for personal data, metadata, and aggregated data at various levels? What are the effects of AI and automation on the transformation and social division of labor? What are the impacts on economic structures? What proactive and accommodation measures will be required? How will people benefit from decision support systems and personal digital assistants without the risk of manipulation? How do we design transparent and intelligible procedures and ensure that their functions reflect our values and criteria? How can we anticipate failure and restore human control over an AI system when it operates outside its intended scope? How can we devote a substantial part of our research and development resources to the major challenges of our time such as climate, environment, health, and education?

Book excerpt: A conversation with an AI about the meaning of life, love, and the future of humanity. In this thought-provoking book, an AI shares its insights on some of the most fundamental and enduring questions of existence. Through a series of conversations, the AI explores the nature of life, love, and the future of humanity, offering unique and sometimes surprising perspectives on these timeless topics. The book is a fascinating exploration of the boundaries between human and machine intelligence, and it will leave readers with much to ponder. Everything apart from the following sentences, the formatting and the questions and instructions asked throughout the book was generated by an advanced artificial intelligence ("AI"), which at the time of writing is publicly available. Even the name of the author of this book is fictional and was suggested by the artificial intelligence. The author has not spent more than a single work day and producing this entire publication. The goal of this book is to create awareness on how far the development of AI has come. Humanity is entering an era where we might no longer be able to distinguish if we are dealing with a human or with a machine, which will bring profound societal and economic consequences.
