Book What is this thing called Knowledge

Download or read book What is this thing called Knowledge written by Duncan Pritchard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is knowledge? Where does it come from? What kinds of knowledge are there? Can we know anything at all? This lucid and engaging introduction grapples with these central questions in the theory of knowledge, offering a clear, non-partisan view of the main themes of epistemology. Both traditional issues and contemporary ideas are discussed in sixteen easily digestible chapters, each of which conclude with a useful summary of the main ideas discussed, study questions, annotated further reading and a guide to internet resources. Each chapter also features text boxes providing bite-sized summaries of key concepts and major philosophers, and clear and interesting examples are used throughout. The book concludes with an annotated guide to general introductions to epistemology, a glossary of key terms, and a summary of the main examples used in epistemology, This an ideal first textbook in the theory of knowledge for undergraduates coming to philosophy for the first time. The third edition has been revised and updated throughout and features two new chapters, on religious knowledge and scientific knowledge, as part of a whole new section on what kinds of knowledge there are. In addition, the text as a whole has been refreshed to keep it up to date with current developments.

Book The Social Studies Curriculum

Download or read book The Social Studies Curriculum written by E. Wayne Ross and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third edition of The Social Studies Curriculum thoroughly updates the definitive overview of the primary issues teachers face when creating learning experiences for students in social studies. By connecting the diverse elements of the social studies curriculum—history education, civic, global, and social issues—the book offers a unique and critical perspective that separates it from other texts in the field. This edition includes new work on race, gender, sexuality, critical multiculturalism, visual culture, moral deliberation, digital technologies, teaching democracy, and the future of social studies education. In an era marked by efforts to standardize curriculum and teaching, this book challenges the status quo by arguing that social studies curriculum and teaching should be about uncovering elements that are taken for granted in our everyday experiences, and making them the target of inquiry.

Book What is History and Other Late Unpublished Writings

Download or read book What is History and Other Late Unpublished Writings written by Eric Voegelin and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the most significant pieces of unpublished writing completed by Eric Voegelin during an important time of his career. Spanning the period from the early 1960s to the late 1970s, these selections supplement the body of work Voegelin published after the appearance of the first three volumes of Order and History in 1956 and 1957. The five texts included here are "What Is History?" "Anxiety and Reason," "The Eclipse of Reality," "The Moving Soul," and "The Beginning and the Beyond." In their introduction to the volume, Thomas A. Hollweck and Paul Caringella place these writings in their proper context and discuss the ways in which they reveal clues to the evolution of Voegelin's thought. In "What Is History?" Voegelin considers the development of a transcendent structure of history while simultaneously rejecting the notion that history can have a universal meaning. "Anxiety and Reason" focuses on Voegelin's critically important theory of historiogenesis, which links events in pragmatic history with legendary and mythical events leading back to the beginning of the cosmic order. In "The Eclipse of Reality," Voegelin presents a critique of modernity by analyzing the work of Sartre, Schiller, Comte, and others. "The Moving Soul"--a "thought experiment" inspired by a remark Henry Margenau makes in The Nature of Physical Reality--attempts to reformulate the connections between physics and myth. The most important of these essays is "Me Beginning and the Beyond." Here Voegelin meditates on the universality of experience formed by the tension of existence under God. Publication of these previously unpublished writings will enable scholars to trace the genesis of many of the concerns that occupied Voegelin during a period in which the conception of his main work was undergoing frequent and perhaps fundamental changes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been observed that the traditions, philosophies and beliefs that enjoy historical longevity are not those that remain static and unchanging, but rather those that evolve and adapt to meet the needs of different or changing societies. And that truth, of course, can be extended to religions and spiritualities that by necessity must remain relevant to peoples’ lives or become intellectual museum pieces. With topics ranging from CyberWitches to Activism, from Web Weaving to Urban Witchcraft, from the Arts to Kitchen and Solitary Witchcraft and more, What is Modern Witchcraft? considers contemporary developments in the ancient craft and discusses a number of questions and issues that are frequently raised today. What is Modern Witchcraft? is edited by Trevor Greenfield and features essays from Morgan Daimler, Annette George, Irisanya Moon, Rebecca Beattie, Philipp J. Kessler, Amie Ravenson, Rachel Patterson, Mélusine Draco, Dorothy Abrams, Arietta Bryant and Mabh Savage.

Book What We Know about Teaching Teenagers A Guide for Teachers Parents and Administrators

Download or read book What We Know about Teaching Teenagers A Guide for Teachers Parents and Administrators written by Dr. Richard A. NeSmith and published by Applied Principles of Education & Learning. This book was released on 2021-03-07 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What we know about teaching Teenagers", 2019 I would like to thank Dr. Richard NeSmith for helping me know more about what goes through teenagers’ minds and grow into a better teacher. Dr. NeSmith’s 28-plus years of teaching experience and careful study of biology, developmental and cognitive psychology make him one of the best experts in the field. His book explains the difficulties students have learning at school and reflects on how to overcome them, promoting a better understanding of the changes going on in teenagers’ lives as well as an elementary understanding of what causes pain points in the brain of the adult-in-the-making. Above all, Dr. NeSmith reminds us that teenagers are individuals, with their personality, strengths, weaknesses, and their ways of showing love and concern. The book has been carefully researched and will make you aware of the cognitive-emotional interactions going on inside the mind of preadolescents to improve your teaching strategies. It is such a privilege to teach and take teenagers from childhood to adulthood. Whether you are a parent, a teacher, or a school administrator you will find in this book strategies to facilitate learning and encourage lifelong learning. =========================================================================== A research-based book addressing brain-based learning and how secondary age students best learn and how teachers can best teach to meet those needs. American public education is on life support like never before. Why? The shift from LEARNING to standardized testing, ticking boxes for administrators, and watering down curricula are some of the reasons. This synthesis of brain-based research emphasizes how students best learn. It is NOT a checklist, it is a strategy that empowered teachers can utilize to improve student learning. But, knowing how teens think enables teachers to know HOW TEENS best LEARN. --Dr. Richard NeSmith
