Book What Impact Does a Collaborative Reading Comprehension Program Have on Emerging Literacy Skills of Preschool Students

Download or read book What Impact Does a Collaborative Reading Comprehension Program Have on Emerging Literacy Skills of Preschool Students written by Jeannette E. Janson and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My research study and following paper resulted from working in a collaborative preschool setting involving Early Childhood Special Education, Head Start, and Early Childhood Family Education. I noticed there were different philosophies on what appropriate preschool literacy activities should be. One program had instituted programming teaching preschoolers to read letters of the alphabet and identify their sound. One program emphasized writing skills. My program involved Developmentally Delayed students who were not ready for either type of activity. My review of literature provided evidence that improved dialogic reading between a child and adult is one of the most effective ways to improve some emergent literacy skills. My literature review also established that rhyming, vocabulary building, and alliteration are learning activities that are predictive of a child's future literacy skills. The purpose of my study was to examine whether dialogic reading between a child and parent would help increase emergent literacy skills of rhyming, vocabulary and alliteration at the Early Childhood level. My study consisted of six preschool children. A pretest and a post test were done in a preschool setting. Dialogic reading took place in the home between a parent and child for six weeks. Book packets with guide sheets were used. The results indicated parents enjoyed the dialogic reading and activities. The post test showed a small gain in rhyming, alliteration and vocabulary skills.

Book Making the Most of Shared Reading in Preschool

Download or read book Making the Most of Shared Reading in Preschool written by Katherine A. Beauchat and published by ProQuest. This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preschool educators, especially those serving an at-risk population, have an awesome responsibility to provide best practice in emergent literacy skill development. A preschool child's success in this domain is important to success in kindergarten and potentially throughout their academic career. As the preschool workforce represents a unique population of educators, each individual with powerful personal knowledge, beliefs, and practices in the area of language and literacy, a unique professional development approach is required to address these differences and provide guided support. An Innovation Configuration (IC) tool, specifically created for the context of shared storybook reading, is one way to accomplish this goal. The use of this tool allows the preschool teacher to identify the essential components of storybook reading, reflect upon their current level of implementation, and take gradual steps along the continuum toward the goal--ideal implementation of shared storybook reading. Taken together, the IC tool may provide preschool educators with both knowledge and implementation of best practice in early literacy and language development. It is through this knowledge and implementation of best practice that early childhood educators provide preschool children a foundation for literacy success.

Book An Adapted Shared Storybook Reading Program Implemented in Inclusive Preschool Classrooms

Download or read book An Adapted Shared Storybook Reading Program Implemented in Inclusive Preschool Classrooms written by Andrea Noel-Hahn Golloher and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pathways to Literacy reading program (Lee, Mims, & Browder, 2011) has been demonstrated to be effective at increasing both engagement and comprehension during shared storybook reading for students with exceptional needs. To date, research on Pathways to Literacy has been limited to students in early elementary school rather than preschool, which is when shared reading is usually emphasized as part of the general education curriculum. In these investigations, the reading program has been administered in one-on-one instructional settings, often in special education classrooms. No existing research has examined the ability of participating students to generalize newly learned skills to novel adapted books. The current study seeks to add to the literature by investigating the use of the Pathways to Literacy reading program in inclusive preschool settings. Three questions were addressed. First, using a multiple baseline design across three students, the question of whether or not the reading program remained effective for the target student when introduced in this new setting was asked. Second, whether or not the target students were able to generalize their skills in the areas of engagement, listening comprehension, and communication was addressed via the introduction of novel adapted books. Finally, teachers' perceptions of the reading program were explored. Of particular interest were questions related to what changes they would recommend so that the reading program can be used in this new setting. Results suggest that the Pathways to Literacy reading program was effective in increasing both engagement and listening comprehension and communication for the targeted preschool students and these skills generalized to novel adapted books. Pre- and post-intervention interviews suggest that the teachers found the goals, procedures, and outcomes of the Pathways to Literacy reading program were generally appropriate for preschool students.

Book Preventing Reading Difficulties in Young Children

Download or read book Preventing Reading Difficulties in Young Children written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1998-07-22 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While most children learn to read fairly well, there remain many young Americans whose futures are imperiled because they do not read well enough to meet the demands of our competitive, technology-driven society. This book explores the problem within the context of social, historical, cultural, and biological factors. Recommendations address the identification of groups of children at risk, effective instruction for the preschool and early grades, effective approaches to dialects and bilingualism, the importance of these findings for the professional development of teachers, and gaps that remain in our understanding of how children learn to read. Implications for parents, teachers, schools, communities, the media, and government at all levels are discussed. The book examines the epidemiology of reading problems and introduces the concepts used by experts in the field. In a clear and readable narrative, word identification, comprehension, and other processes in normal reading development are discussed. Against the background of normal progress, Preventing Reading Difficulties in Young Children examines factors that put children at risk of poor reading. It explores in detail how literacy can be fostered from birth through kindergarten and the primary grades, including evaluation of philosophies, systems, and materials commonly used to teach reading.
