Book Inherited Memories

Download or read book Inherited Memories written by Firdous Azim and published by Zubaan. This book was released on 2020-09-30 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2015 the Goethe-Instituts in Kolkata (India) and Dhaka (Bangladesh) began a collaborative project entitled ‘Inherited Memories’. The project began with a key question that grew out of discussions on memory and history: was there such a thing as a ‘culture of remembrance’ in India, something akin to the Erinnerungskultur in Germany? The question was asked specifically in relation to the Partition of India in 1947: why was it that such a major historical event found little reflection in public memory? Soon, other questions came up: why was it, for example, that whatever memorialising existed was largely in the West, in Punjab, and the Bengal region, which had lived through two partitions and a war that could be likened to a third partition, was given such little attention? At the time these discussions began, many, perhaps most, of the survivors of the 1947 Partition were no longer alive and their memories therefore lost to us. It is often said that memory jumps a generation, so a decision was taken to talk across borders with the children and grandchildren of Partition refugees in the Bengal region, to look at how memory is passed down, what is retained or lost, and how it is owned and shared by subsequent generations. This book, which comprises interviews from both Bangladesh and West Bengal, is the result of these discussions. Guided by a committed and engaged group of writers from both countries, the book explores, through the stories of ancestors the memories people carried with them, the things they never forgot, the yearnings that did not go away, the journeys that remained unfinished, and those that were accomplished. Through these, it examines how history simultaneously looks so similar and so different from either side.

Book Good Girls Wicked Witches

Download or read book Good Girls Wicked Witches written by Amy M. Davis and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2007-02-20 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An in-depth view of the way popular female stereotypes were reflected in—and were shaped by—the portrayal of women in Disney’s animated features. In Good Girls and Wicked Witches, Amy M. Davis re-examines the notion that Disney heroines are rewarded for passivity. Davis proceeds from the assumption that, in their representations of femininity, Disney films both reflected and helped shape the attitudes of the wider society, both at the time of their first release and subsequently. Analyzing the construction of (mainly human) female characters in the animated films of the Walt Disney Studio between 1937 and 2001, she attempts to establish the extent to which these characterizations were shaped by wider popular stereotypes. Davis argues that it is within the most constructed of all moving images of the female form—the heroine of the animated film—that the most telling aspects of Woman as the subject of Hollywood iconography and cultural ideas of American womanhood are to be found. “A fascinating compilation of essays in which [Davis] examined the way Disney has treated female characters throughout its history.” —PopMatters

Book excerpt: A must-read for anyone who has ever rolled their eyes skyward and asked, “Hey God, is there like a road map to life?” Srinagar was dressed in her autumn best. Like blushing brides, the trees were clothed in bright red, their graceful limbs swaying eagerly forth in the wind, and then, as if suddenly recalling their modesty, holding back just a bit. Neerja’s grandmother was busy in the kitchen. The smell of pickles enticed the chubby little girl and she walked in to watch the elderly woman create magic with her wrinkled hands. Every now and then, she would steal a piece of sour green mango, flick it into the air and catch it in her mouth. The taste was heaven… pure heaven. “Oh nani, I love you!” Neerja sighed. “This is the greatest treasure you could ever give me!” “Oh, no, my little one”, replied her grandmother, beating masalas into a bowl to marinate the cut raw mango pieces. “Raw mangoes are not the greatest treasure.” “I give up Nani! Tell me, tell me now, what is the greatest treasure?” Equal parts humorous and soul-stirring, the deeply personal and disturbingly honest I Inspire reveals how the human spirit is much, much bigger than anything it endures. Neerja Malik, a double cancer survivor, works with cancer patients to spread awareness. She was instrumental in setting up the Apollo Cancer Support Group at the Apollo Specialty Hospital, Chennai. She is also the trustee of the NGO ‘Sankalp’ that works at providing free education to the girls. Megha Bajaj is the acclaimed author of Thank You, Cancer!, Apurva Vichar and Yes I can Write. She also writes for Life Positive, Reader’s Digest, Robin Age, The Hindu, infinithoughts and many more. Megha is the founder of Wonder of Words (WOW), which is into online writing and healing workshops.

And with this posting on Craigslist, so begins Nani Power's journey to learn traditional Indian cooking in the most ancient of ways — woman to woman. Welcomed warmly into the homes of strangers, Power meets women of all ages and backgrounds, and from them learns the skills that were passed on to them from their own mothers. Power takes the reader into a culture, a cuisine, and the female psyche, with recipes and stories from each chapter revealing the struggle of modern women, both American and of Indian descent, searching for identity and a definition of what it means to be a woman today. The recipes shared in this collection are far from ordinary; they are treasured family recipes from vegetarian homes in India — from homemade cheese cubes in a rich cilantro and almond curry to coconut–stuffed okra and luscious potato–curry dumplings. Power's recipes and stories pave the road to understanding a culture that is at the same time ancient and so very much part of our modern world.

Book excerpt: Love is an energy; Energy is dynamic. If it moves, you will soon find that it is no longer love, it has become meditation, it has become prayer. Herein lies the whole path of tantra—that if love is properly developed, if the attitude of love is carefully looked after, it becomes a prayer. It ultimately becomes the highest experience of righteousness. When a person feels the energy of that love only for the first time. So, it becomes a strange mystery to that person. Because there the intellect does not do its work because the intellect cannot understand that mystery at all. For that we must open those doors of the heart, opening of which every living being is afraid. Because the more freedom that door gives you. The same amount of secrets completely engulfs you in themselves. You are like that hunter where you are hunting your own prey and away then you feel cheated. Because our mind cannot open or solve this fiber web. He will try to understand it as intellectually as possible. The more he will get entangled in it.
