The Book owes its origin to a small cause. A few years ago a sermon was preached at St. Martin's, in which some account was given of the history of the Church and its ornaments. It aroused considerable interest, and as some members of the con gregation expressed a desire to, see the information in print, Mr. Baker kindly_undertook the publication of a leaflet, which should serve as a guide for visitors, containing a brief summary of the different points to be noticed in the fabric of the Church, &c. It was felt, however, that there was so much more to be said on the subject, and so much interesting material to draw from in the Churchwardens' Accounts, Vestry Books, and documents in the Church Chests, that Mr. Baker consented to do a further service, and collect and record all that he thought would be of value to those who desired to know more of the history which gathered round their Parish Church. The result is now given to the reader in the following pages. To the writer, the Book, which is the outcome of many hours of research, has been a labour of love, but he would not wish it to be regarded as more than a collection of Notes. As such, however, it is a veritable mine of wealth, from which a great deal of interesting and valuable information can be drawn. Mr. Baker deserves our warmest thanks for placing so many facts within our reach, and helping us to realise something of the part which our old Church and Parish have played in the history of this City and Country. Of this Territory, must recognize the fact that, whatever permanent success it may have attained, and whatever in uence it may have exerted upon the Mormon community, have been mainly through the school work of the church. Utah owes her better civilization, her culture in American Principles, and her broader thought, to the Christian schools, established along with the planting of the churches. The Methodist Church opened its first mission school in Salt Lake City, September 12, 1870, with an enrollment of twenty-eight pupils. It gained rapidly in favor and in uence in the city, and for a time its permanent success seemed assured. By reason of untoward circum stances it lost its prestige and reached a very low ebb. During the past year, however, a renewed effort has been made to establish it on a perma nent basis, and make it the central school of the church for the Territory. A new and vigorous policy. Is now being pursued to accomplish this end. The success of the school thus far during the present year, through the untiring energy of the Principal, Rev. T. B. Hilton, A. M., and the. Faithful work performed by his associate teachers, is very gratifying. There has been a continued increase in the number of pupils in attend ance, a higher degree of efficiency attained, and a growing Confidence in the community in its ultimate success. It is the purpose of the church to develop this school into a Uni versity. As tributary to this, Seminaries have been established at Ogden, Tooele, Beaver and Provo, where new and permanent improvements in school buildings have been made during the present year. Edmund at Bury: I, the Library, II, the Church The two Essays contained in this volume have both of them grown out of papers read by me before the Cambridge Antiquarian Society. The circumstances which led me to write them are sufficiently set forth, I think, in the opening paragraphs of each: but I should like to take the present opportunity of explaining to my readers the reasons for the form in which the second of the two Essays appears here, and of anticipating certain criticisms which might reasonably be passed on it. It should by rights have been furnished with copious references to the Appendix which follows (and overshadows) it. But the truth is that this Appendix is in its present form an afterthought. I had originally intended to print only the new materials which I had discovered in the Register at Douai and in the manuscript at the College of Arms: but it became evident that extracts from the gesta Sacristarum would have to be added; and then that quotations from Jocelin de Braekelond were indispensable: and, not to make a long story of it, I ultimately decided to present my readers with the whole of the materials that lay before myself, and so to enable them to check the conclusions I had arrived at, by their own independent study of the documents I had used. Again, the issuing of the second Essay together with the first, as an "octavo publication," instead of allowing it to appear as an ordinary Communication, was another afterthought. It was not discussed until part of the text had been printed off. To me it seems a very happy idea, and I am very grateful to those who suggested and carried out the change. This fact will explain satisfactorily, I hope, the occurrence of some repetitions in the second Essay of facts alluded to in the first.
