Book What Civilization Owes to the Church Classic Reprint

Download or read book What Civilization Owes to the Church Classic Reprint written by William Quinn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-02-26 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from What Civilization Owes to the Church At her very foundation Our Divine Savior gave to her these very definite charges: the diffusion among all nations of the teaching of Christianity; the preservation of the treasure of the Faith; the maintaining in honor before men the beauty of Christian revelation; the inclining of men's wil'ls to the observance of a lofty moral law. These were the commissions. Given to the Church in the beginning: a stupendous program, guaranteed against failure by Him who gave it. To bring men's minds into conformity with God's mind by right thinking, and men's hands into conformity with God's law by right acting - which alone is supernatural religion - this was the work of the Church. Book Civilization Before and After Christianity

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Civilization Before and After Christianity: Two Lectures Delivered in St. Paul's Cathedral, at the Tuesday Evening Services, January 23rd 30th, 1872 The first set was delivered by Mr. Gregory, in answer to the question, "Are we better than our Fathers?" and in them he considered the comparative distribution of wealth among different ranks of English society, now and in the seventeenth century, the relative positions of rich and poor, and the ties by which various classes of the community are bound together, at the two eras. In the next course. Dr. Liddon examined the assumption, often boldly made, that Christianity is on the decline, in its political, intellectual, social, and moral aspects. The third was by Bishop Claughton, on the Ethics of Mahomedanism and Buddhism, as compared with the Ethics of Christianity. My interrupted set came next, and Professor Lightfoot was to have finished the series by some lectures on early Christian life. Book Notes on St Martin s Church and Parish Classic Reprint

Download or read book Notes on St Martin s Church and Parish Classic Reprint written by Thomas H. Baker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on St. Martin's Church and Parish My friend, Mr. Baker, has asked me to write a few words of introduction to the Notes which he has compiled on St. Martin's Church. The Book owes its origin to a small cause. A few years ago a sermon was preached at St. Martin's, in which some account was given of the history of the Church and its ornaments. It aroused considerable interest, and as some members of the con gregation expressed a desire to, see the information in print, Mr. Baker kindly_undertook the publication of a leaflet, which should serve as a guide for visitors, containing a brief summary of the different points to be noticed in the fabric of the Church, &c. It was felt, however, that there was so much more to be said on the subject, and so much interesting material to draw from in the Churchwardens' Accounts, Vestry Books, and documents in the Church Chests, that Mr. Baker consented to do a further service, and collect and record all that he thought would be of value to those who desired to know more of the history which gathered round their Parish Church. The result is now given to the reader in the following pages. To the writer, the Book, which is the outcome of many hours of research, has been a labour of love, but he would not wish it to be regarded as more than a collection of Notes. As such, however, it is a veritable mine of wealth, from which a great deal of interesting and valuable information can be drawn. Mr. Baker deserves our warmest thanks for placing so many facts within our reach, and helping us to realise something of the part which our old Church and Parish have played in the history of this City and Country. Nothing could be easier than to suggest the lengthening or shortening of passages and the addition or substitution of other selections. No two schol ars could agree as to what is absolutely best for a volume of the kind; and those who have cooperated in its preparation can only hope that it may in some degree contribute to an understanding of the spirit of ancient Hellas and add to the interest in her culture. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Utah Review, Vol. 1: March, 1882 Whoever has thoughtfully considered the relations that the Christian church sustains to _the peculiar civilization of this New West, and its antagonism to the religious despotism. Of this Territory, must recognize the fact that, whatever permanent success it may have attained, and whatever in uence it may have exerted upon the Mormon community, have been mainly through the school work of the church. Utah owes her better civilization, her culture in American Principles, and her broader thought, to the Christian schools, established along with the planting of the churches. The Methodist Church opened its first mission school in Salt Lake City, September 12, 1870, with an enrollment of twenty-eight pupils. It gained rapidly in favor and in uence in the city, and for a time its permanent success seemed assured. By reason of untoward circum stances it lost its prestige and reached a very low ebb. During the past year, however, a renewed effort has been made to establish it on a perma nent basis, and make it the central school of the church for the Territory. A new and vigorous policy. Is now being pursued to accomplish this end. The success of the school thus far during the present year, through the untiring energy of the Principal, Rev. T. B. Hilton, A. M., and the. Faithful work performed by his associate teachers, is very gratifying. There has been a continued increase in the number of pupils in attend ance, a higher degree of efficiency attained, and a growing Confidence in the community in its ultimate success. It is the purpose of the church to develop this school into a Uni versity. As tributary to this, Seminaries have been established at Ogden, Tooele, Beaver and Provo, where new and permanent improvements in school buildings have been made during the present year. Book On the Abbey of S Edmund at Bury

Download or read book On the Abbey of S Edmund at Bury written by Montague Rhodes James and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Abbey of S. Edmund at Bury: I, the Library, II, the Church The two Essays contained in this volume have both of them grown out of papers read by me before the Cambridge Antiquarian Society. The circumstances which led me to write them are sufficiently set forth, I think, in the opening paragraphs of each: but I should like to take the present opportunity of explaining to my readers the reasons for the form in which the second of the two Essays appears here, and of anticipating certain criticisms which might reasonably be passed on it. It should by rights have been furnished with copious references to the Appendix which follows (and overshadows) it. But the truth is that this Appendix is in its present form an afterthought. I had originally intended to print only the new materials which I had discovered in the Register at Douai and in the manuscript at the College of Arms: but it became evident that extracts from the gesta Sacristarum would have to be added; and then that quotations from Jocelin de Braekelond were indispensable: and, not to make a long story of it, I ultimately decided to present my readers with the whole of the materials that lay before myself, and so to enable them to check the conclusions I had arrived at, by their own independent study of the documents I had used. Again, the issuing of the second Essay together with the first, as an "octavo publication," instead of allowing it to appear as an ordinary Communication, was another afterthought. It was not discussed until part of the text had been printed off. To me it seems a very happy idea, and I am very grateful to those who suggested and carried out the change. This fact will explain satisfactorily, I hope, the occurrence of some repetitions in the second Essay of facts alluded to in the first. This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Double Doctrine of the Church of Rome The Church blessed the methods em ployed by those who really loved and served her; and all such would be considered not only permissible but laudable. What then was to become of the moral code, if ecclesiastical and moral duty clashed? The first is law, the second habit, was the reply. The moral habit is helpful doubtless to primitive simple folk, but it is dead and lifeless in itself, and often crushes the spirit. No great work was ever done by narrow moralists; for with that rule of life, we neither grow nor accomplish. Download or read book From Chaos to Catholicism Classic Reprint written by William George Peck and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From Chaos to Catholicism Students in all departments of intellectual, social and political life are beginning to assert that the long process of analysis, which for several centuries has controlled Western thought and activity, is now drawing rapidly to its close. Even amidst the disappointments of the Peace we cannot be insensible to the fact that an age is dying. Old things are passing away, and the storms and tumults of our time are the harbingers of some new creation. It may be that we are approaching a culmination in which it will be possible to combine, in a richer spiritual complex than has been known, some long dispersed factors of Christian civilization. The moment is one in which faith may be courageous. The most eager and inquiring of Christian men are feeling that in the perplexity and paralysis of the world there is a ground of hope. It seems that upon our rocking skies the Son of Man may come to create, if men so will, a new earth. It is the writer's firm conviction that if fire from God is needed to fuse the disintegrated life of society, it must fall first upon the altars of the Church. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Destiny of Man Proved From Reason: And the Infallibility of the Catholic Church Proved From Reason and History Give a br1ef refutation of such before I could enter on the subject. The immortality of the soul, the free-will of man and the eternally happy end for which God created him form the basis on which I had to build my arguments. After re futing the above mentioned errors, I showed that the means for arriving at the truths of supernatural revelation can neither be the Bible nor human reason. This naturally leads us to inquire whether God established a supreme and visible authority to govern and teach His church, and whether that supreme authority, ln 1ts official capacity, or ex cathedra, is infallible in teaching faith and morals. But before We come to consider this, it must be shown that Christ was on earth and founded a church, and that He is God as well as man; then we must have a clear conception of the essential ele ments of society in general. It is impossible to have a distinct idea of the church founded by Christ unless we under stand of what elements it is composed. We must, then.
