Book Ecology of Freshwater and Estuarine Wetlands

Download or read book Ecology of Freshwater and Estuarine Wetlands written by Darold P. Batzer and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2014-12-06 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition of this important and authoritative survey provides students and researchers with up-to-date and accessible information about the ecology of freshwater and estuarine wetlands. Prominent scholars help students understand both general concepts of different wetland types as well as complex topics related to these dynamic physical environments. Careful syntheses review wetland soils, hydrology, and geomorphology; abiotic constraints for wetland plants and animals; microbial ecology and biogeochemistry; development of wetland plant communities; wetland animal ecology; and carbon dynamics and ecosystem processes. In addition, contributors document wetland regulation, policy, and assessment in the US and provide a clear roadmap for adaptive management and restoration of wetlands. New material also includes an expanded review of the consequences for wetlands in a changing global environment. Ideally suited for wetlands ecology courses, Ecology of Freshwater and Estuarine Wetlands, Second Edition, includes updated content, enhanced images (many in color), and innovative pedagogical elements that guide students and interested readers through the current state of our wetlands.

Book Aquatic and Wetland Vascular Plants of the Northern Great Plains

Download or read book Aquatic and Wetland Vascular Plants of the Northern Great Plains written by Gary Eugene Larson and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 692 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A taxonomic treatment of aquatic and wetland vascular plants has been developed as a tool for identifying over 500 plant species inhabiting wetlands of the northern Great Plains region. The treatment provides dichotomous keys and botanical descriptions to facilitate identification of all included taxa. Illustrations are also provided for selected species. Geographical ranges and habitat preferences are described for each species, and a map is provided for each plant showing its documented occurrences by counties within the region. Additional information provided with species descriptions includes common name(s), flowering/fruiting periods, and nomenclatural synonyms. A glossary of botanical terms is also provided.

Book Southern Forested Wetlands

Download or read book Southern Forested Wetlands written by Michael G. Messina and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-09-18 with total page 710 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1998, Southern Forested Wetlands is an up to date, one source compendium of current knowledge on the wetland ecology of America’s southern forests. This book presents both the ecological and management aspects of these important ecosystems. The book was compiled by members of the Consortium for Research on southern forested wetlands, and was a collaboration of those working to conserve, study, and manage these economically and environmentally influential areas. The book covers geographic ranges from West Virginia to Florida, to Texas and inland north to Arkansas and Tennessee. It also addresses specific wetland types, including deep-water swamps, major and minor alluvial flood plains, pocosins and Carolina bays, mountain fens, pond cypress swamps, flatwoods wetlands, and mangroves.

Book Forest Service Programs Authorities and Relationships

Download or read book Forest Service Programs Authorities and Relationships written by Ervin G. Schuster and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Forest and Rangeland Renewable Resources Planning Act (RPA) of 1974, as amended, directs the Forest Service to prepare and update a renewable resources assessment that would include "a description of Forest Service programs and responsibilities , their interrelationships, and the relationship of these programs and responsibilities to public and private activities." The first description was part of the RPA Assessment document in 1979. The second was published as an independent support document in 1989. This third description is organized around major Forest Service programs within the National Forest System, State and Private Forestry, and Research and Development. Programs and responsibilities within International Programs, Law Enforcement and Investigations, Capital Improvement and Maintenance, along with Senior, Youth, and Volunteer Programs, are also discussed. Each section discusses major program areas, legal authorizations, administrative and organizational considerations, and relationships within the Forest Service and with outside organizations. A listing of major legislative authorities is provided."

Book Restoration of Aquatic Ecosystems

Download or read book Restoration of Aquatic Ecosystems written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aldo Leopold, father of the "land ethic," once said, "The time has come for science to busy itself with the earth itself. The first step is to reconstruct a sample of what we had to begin with." The concept he expressedâ€"restorationâ€"is defined in this comprehensive new volume that examines the prospects for repairing the damage society has done to the nation's aquatic resources: lakes, rivers and streams, and wetlands. Restoration of Aquatic Ecosystems outlines a national strategy for aquatic restoration, with practical recommendations, and features case studies of aquatic restoration activities around the country. The committee examines: Key concepts and techniques used in restoration. Common factors in successful restoration efforts. Threats to the health of the nation's aquatic ecosystems. Approaches to evaluation before, during, and after a restoration project. The emerging specialties of restoration and landscape ecology.

Book Five Hydrologic Studies

Download or read book Five Hydrologic Studies written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service Center for Forested Wetlands Research has conducted or cooperated in studies designed to improve understanding of fundamental hydrologic and biogeochemical processes that link aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Five of these studies are discussed here. The first is based on observations made on long-term experimental watersheds established in the 1960s on the Forest Service Santee Experimental Forest in South Carolina. It quantifies the soil moisture dynamics, flow regimes, and water chemistry of low-gradient forested wetlands. The second study is being conducted in cooperation with North Carolina State University. It is a long-term project aimed at quantifying the effects of various water management and silvicultural management practices on hydrology and water quality at the Weyerhaeuser Company's managed pine forest in Carteret County, North Carolina. The third study is a long-term ecosystem study on MeadWestvaco's Coosawhatchie River bottomland hardwood site in South Carolina. It addresses questions related to public concerns about the need for protection, restoration, and sustainable management of forested wetlands. The fourth study, which was conducted between 1997 and 2000, examined the hydrology and water quality of intensively managed short-rotation woody crop plantations on International Paper's Trice experimental forest in the upper Coastal Plain of South Carolina. A fifth study was conducted between 1996 and 2004 at MeadWestvaco's Carolina bay site in the South Carolina upper Coastal Plain; it assessed the surface-water and ground-water interactions between Carolina bays and their surrounding uplands. Recommendations are provided for using knowledge gained through these and other studies as a basis for expanding needed hydrologic research with collaborators to address four major areas of water-related issues in the Southeast."--P.
