Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Westward to the Far East: A Guide to the Principal Cities of China and Japan "Westward to the Far East" is intended to supply general information in a concise form to those who may be desirous of visiting Japan and China, as well as to serve as a guide to those visiting those portions of the Orient by the Canadian Pacific Route. It is not an elaborately descriptive work, nor is it a mere bald statement of times, distances and measurements. It indicates the chief points of beauty and interest along the route and in Japan and China, dealing at sufficient length with each subject to satisfy the casual observer, and referring those who desire more detailed information to the several sources from which that may be obtained. It is intended to tell the possible traveller what there is to be seen and the actual traveller how to see it. It should be, if its author's good intention is fulfilled, interesting to the one and useful to the other. It is the result of personal observation and enquiry prompted by the desire to acquire the knowledge most useful to a tourist, and while being a trustworthy guide to those travelling in the countries referred to, will teach others a great deal about China and Japan which they cannot fail to be interested in knowing. Those who have made up their minds to take this enjoyable trip will, of course, require information - which being subject to change is not found in the guide book - concerning sailings of steamships, baggage allowances, tickets, connections and so forth, for which application should be made to one or other of the Canadian Pacific Railway Company's Agents. And such intending travellers will probably like to have the companion, "The New Highway to the Orient," a handsomely illustrated pamphlet, which tells of the journey across the continent, and which the agents of the company will furnish with pleasure to any one desirous of reading it. Book Western Visions of the Far East in a Transpacific Age 1522 1657

Download or read book Western Visions of the Far East in a Transpacific Age 1522 1657 written by Christina H. Lee and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-17 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing to bear the latest developments across various areas of research and disciplines, this collection provides a broad perspective on how Western Europe made sense of a complex, multi-faceted, and by and large Sino-centered East and Southeast Asia. The volume covers the transpacific period--after Magellan's opening of the transpacific route to the Far East and before the eventual dominance of the region by the British and the Dutch. In contrast to the period of the Enlightenment, during which Orientalist discourses arose, this initial period of encounters and conquest is characterized by an enormous curiosity and a desire to seize--not only materially but intellectually--the lands and peoples of East Asia. The essays investigate European visions of the Far East--particularly of China and Japan--and examine how and why particular representations of Asians and their cultural practices were constructed, revised, and adapted. Collectively, the essays show that images of the Far East were filtered by worldviews that ranged from being, on the one hand, universalistic and relatively equitable towards cultures to the other extreme, unilaterally Eurocentric.

Book Around the World Due West to the Far East Classic Reprint

Download or read book Around the World Due West to the Far East Classic Reprint written by Robert Stuart Macarthur and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-16 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Around the World, Due West to the Far East This volume would have appeared sooner but for a disastrous fire which necessitated delay; but it has been thought wise to allow the text to remain as it was originally written. The author indulged in some rather bold prophecies regard ing the relation of Hawaii to the United States, and also touching other matters; and it is strangely interesting to see how literally history has fulfilled these predictions. If the reader can get any part of the enjoy ment out of this trip which the writer had in making the journey, investigating historical facts, and recording his Observations, the reader will not have read, nor the writer have traveled and written, in vain.
