Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A century of dealmaking and government misdeeds forms the backdrop of this entertaining account of sternwheelers, iron horses and mountain roads. Battling factions of rail builders crossed many a line in the sand as they carved up both the land and the spoils of industry. Did both federal and provincial politicians wittingly sabotage road-construction programs to the benefit of the rail barons? Were Cornelius Van Horne, Major A.B. Rogers and Andrew McCulloch fully deserving of the accolades bestowed on them? Was railway man J.J. Hill a genius or an opportunist? R.G. Harvey has applied a keen mind and deft pen to uncover skulduggery in politics and critical routing errors by the early surveyors and engineers who "carved their western paths." In turn he has exposed new scars and wrinkles to add to historic portraits otherwise untainted.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of British Columbia's transportation systems north of the Canadian National Railway's mainline may not be well known--but it certainly is colourful. Continuing the story he began in the first volume of Carving the Western Path, R.G. Harvey describes the development of river, road and rail routes that crossed the northern two-thirds of BC. This was a land of dreams and schemes that seemed to feed on each other. It started with the Collins Overland Telegraph, a communication link that was to connect Europe and America in the 1860s. Though this plan collapsed with the success of the trans-Atlantic cable, the telegraph surveyors established patterns for future roads and settlement. They also sparked the Omineca gold rush. It was a land full of larger-than-life characters, including: Charles Hays, who dreamed of a major seaport at Prince Rupert but died on the Titanic before he could realize his vision. Charles Bedaux, who in the 1930s carved his 416-mile path into the northern Rockies. Railway promoters Warburton Pike, Sir Edward Phillipps-Wolley, William Mackenzie and Donald Mann, who got gifts of land and money but couldn't always meet their promises. Their stories mingle with those of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway, the Alaska Highway, the White Pass and Yukon Railway and those of the sternwheelers, fur traders, gold miners and other adventurers who were drawn to this last frontier.

Download or read book The Metta Way the Western Path of Lovingkindness written by George Hondruk and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2024-02-21 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offering a recap of the tumultuous times and events citizens have lived through since Korea, The Metta Way: the Western Path of Lovingkindness, by author George Hondruk, shares how we can arrive together at a new spiritual framework for life on this planet, through an enlightened democracy and the Metta-Seva Way. Hondruk narrates the story of his life and times, woven within the seminal events of the Cold War, Civil Rights, his sexual naivete and confusion about what manhood should be, the war in Indochina, the peace movement, his retreat to normalcy, his stirring of spirit, the opioid epidemic, and the major figures of those times with whom he interacted. He tells how he discovered the Metta-Seva Way, a better way of living with lovingkindness as the base thought and emotion, with selfless service following naturally. Hondruk identifies it as our successful species survival tool. The Metta Way: the Western Path of Lovingkindness delivers the message that equality comes through diversity and inclusion and is both the history and destination of democracy, America, and all of us.

  • Pages : 256 pages

Download or read book The Western Path written by Peter Goodchild and published by . This book was released on 2021-08-30 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Goodchild's The Western Path is a witty and profound manual of how to get through the end of the world as we know it. Fossil fuels are running out and people will not stop breeding. The West lacks the vigor to live due to the self-injected poison of multiculturalism, globalism and open borders. Thus the end of comfort and leisure is nigh, and lacking a readily available propellant, the good times will literally stop rolling. The post-oil earth will be apocalyptic in terms of the sheer collapse of infrastructure, services and communications. "Back to the Stone Age" will cease to be a mere hollow phrase. Hunting, gathering, and - above all - farming will become the order of the day once more. Drawing from real-life experience, the author lays out in meticulous detail, referencing both the finances and work involved, what it takes to detach yourself from the rat race and set up a humble abode in Mother Nature's bosom and live off its bounty, all before the coming cataclysm that will wipe away the fatuous complexities of a society gone mad. Learning to struggle against everyday nuisances without modern-day amenities will be trying for most and only very few determined and true survival-minded individualists will manage to eke out an existence for themselves and their offspring.

Arranged schematically, the book uses the inherent structure of the chakra system as a map upon which to chart our Western understanding of individual development. Each chapter focuses on a single chakra, starting with a description of its characteristics and then exploring its particular childhood developmental patterns, traumas and abuses, and how to heal and maintain balance.

Book The China Path and its Original Meaning

Download or read book The China Path and its Original Meaning written by Han Qingxiang and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-19 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the fundamental issues of Marxism in the 21st century and explores its contributions through the explanatory framework of the unity of continuity and stages, spatial and temporal analysis, and the dialectical relationship of universality and particularity of Marxist historical development. Marxism in the 21st century is a concept closely related to the historical changes of capitalism and the historical shift of the centre of the socialist movement. Marxism in the 21st century should be developed on the basis of the continuation of the fundamental position, value orientation, ideals and beliefs, basic principles and methodological principles of Marxism. This book explores the logic of the development of modernisation in contemporary China and the world, the communication and interaction between contemporary China and the world, and the coexistence of socialism and capitalism. It also examines the relationship between the adaptation of Marxism to the Chinese context, Marxism in contemporary China and in the 21st century. The book also discusses Xi Jinping's Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, which provides a scientific theoretical system for interpreting the contemporary world and could become the core theoretical form of Marxism in the 21st century. The book will be essential reading for students and scholars of Marxism, Chinese studies and modernisation theory.

Book Resurrecting Empire

  • Author : Rashid Khalidi
  • Publisher : Beacon Press
  • Release : 2010-07-01
  • ISBN : 080700314X
  • Pages : 248 pages

Download or read book Resurrecting Empire written by Rashid Khalidi and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2010-07-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Begun as the United States moved its armed forces into Iraq, Rashid Khalidi's powerful and thoughtful new book examines the record of Western involvement in the region and analyzes the likely outcome of our most recent Middle East incursions. Drawing on his encyclopedic knowledge of the political and cultural history of the entire region as well as interviews and documents, Khalidi paints a chilling scenario of our present situation and yet offers a tangible alternative that can help us find the path to peace rather than Empire. We all know that those who refuse to learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Sadly, as Khalidi reveals with clarity and surety, America's leaders seem blindly committed to an ahistorical path of conflict, occupation, and colonial rule. Our current policies ignore rather than incorporate the lessons of experience. American troops in Iraq have seen first hand the consequences of U.S. led "democratization" in the region. The Israeli/Palestinian conflict seems intractable, and U.S. efforts in recent years have only inflamed the situation. The footprints America follows have led us into the same quagmire that swallowed our European forerunners. Peace and prosperity for the region are nowhere in sight. This cogent and highly accessible book provides the historical and cultural perspective so vital to understanding our present situation and to finding and pursuing a more effective and just foreign policy.

Book Diverse Development Paths and Structural Transformation in the Escape from Poverty

Download or read book Diverse Development Paths and Structural Transformation in the Escape from Poverty written by Martin Andersson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-04-21 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume analyzes the experiences of developing countries in Asia, Latin America, and Sub-Saharan Africa, and examines how they might catch up. Based on growth performance across the developing world over the last five decades, it offers a thorough account of the possibilities to engage in such processes in an increasingly globalized world. Together, the chapters highlight the diversity and variation of development pathways and provide valuable lessons and implications for how to approach this difficult question. The book shows the importance of acknowledging that the process of development is dynamic and that the possibilities for catch up are situation dependent. At the same time it makes clear that without structural change, and in particular agricultural transformation, sustained catch up is unlikely to happen. The volume demonstrates how analysis of current growth processes in developing countries can be enriched by paying closer attention to the multifaceted nature of both economic backwardness and successful pathways to escape it.

Download or read book The Continuous Path written by Samuel Duwe and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2019-04-16 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southwestern archaeology has long been fascinated with the scale and frequency of movement in Pueblo history, from great migrations to short-term mobility. By collaborating with Pueblo communities, archaeologists are learning that movement was—and is—much more than the result of economic opportunity or a response to social conflict. Movement is one of the fundamental concepts of Pueblo thought and is essential in shaping the identities of contemporary Pueblos. The Continuous Path challenges archaeologists to take Pueblo notions of movement seriously by privileging Pueblo concepts of being and becoming in the interpretation of anthropological data. In this volume, archaeologists, anthropologists, and Native community members weave multiple perspectives together to write histories of particular Pueblo peoples. Within these histories are stories of the movements of people, materials, and ideas, as well as the interconnectedness of all as the Pueblo people find, leave, and return to their middle places. What results is an emphasis on historical continuities and the understanding that the same concepts of movement that guided the actions of Pueblo people in the past continue to do so into the present and the future. Movement is a never-ending and directed journey toward an ideal existence and a continuous path of becoming. This path began as the Pueblo people emerged from the underworld and sought their middle places, and it continues today at multiple levels, integrating the people, the village, and the individual.

Also in Europe AI is in excellent shape, as witnessed by the large number of high quality papers in this publication. In comparison with ECAI 2004, there’s a strong increase in the relative number of submissions from Distributed AI / Agents and Cognitive Modelling. Knowledge Representation & Reasoning is traditionally strong in Europe and remains the biggest area of ECAI-06. One reason the figures for Case-Based Reasoning are rather low is that much of the high quality work in this area has found its way into prestigious applications and is thus represented under the heading of PAIS.

This book was released on 2023-04-04 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This discussion has been running with high intensity for half a year since the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Since then, the world is under the unclear threat by Russia. What can human do to deal with this problem? Based on a rigorous argument for the right of self-defense, this book proposes the establishment of a human freedom fund to activate the civil military rights that all human beings necessarily hold as a free person to build a new separation of powers system that can effectively check the usurped political forces of the powerful state. This new system of separation of three powers will allow all human beings to become modern "homo erectus," put an end to the historical fate of individual human lives and put an end to the possibility of various forms of alienated power enslaving human beings.
