Book U S Security Policies in the Western Pacific

Download or read book U S Security Policies in the Western Pacific written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The security environment, issues, and challenges facing the United States today in the Western Pacific are growing more complex. There is no direct single threat as there was during the Cold War in the form of Soviet-backed communism. The Cold War increasingly divided the region into two camps. However, there was a key, variable, shifting element in this situation: China, which turned against the Soviet Union, played off Moscow and Washington, and then shifted decisively into the U.S.-led coalition in the 1980s. China remains a key variable in today's security environment, but there are other elements in Western Pacific security that have joined it: North Korea as an emerging nuclear weapons state, Japan's enlarging security role, Islamic terrorism in Southeast Asia, and volatile political attitudes toward the United States in countries once thought to be reliable allies.

Book Asia Pacific Security Dynamics in the Obama Era

Download or read book Asia Pacific Security Dynamics in the Obama Era written by S Mahmud Ali and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-08-06 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the critical changes to the Asia-Pacific security architecture emerging in the context of shifts in the global order as the Obama Administration’s major strategic innovation and likely legacy unfold. The author reviews the state of the international security system during the Obama presidency, recording the Administration’s Asia-Pacific inheritance, and tracing its efforts to chart a collaborative course aimed at retaining US primacy amidst strategic turbulence. While security discourses are coloured by relative US ‘decline’ and China’s ‘rise,’ the book points out the competitive-cooperative complexity of interactions, with symbiotic economic ties moderating rivalry. Focusing on the military-security cutting edge of Sino-US dynamics, the narrative outlines the dangers posed by extreme nationalist dialectics in an interdependent milieu. It examines the policies of Japan, Australia, India and Russia towards the evolving Sino-US diarchy, while recording Washington’s and Beijing’s contrasting approaches to these allies and possible adversaries. The book concludes with observations on the loss of definition and clarity as the system evolves with multiple actors bidding for influence, and the need for statesmanship as the systemic fulcrum moves from the Atlantic to the Pacific. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of International Politics, Asian Politics, American Politics, International Security and International Relations.

Book The New Pacific Community in the 1990s

Download or read book The New Pacific Community in the 1990s written by Young Jeh Kim and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the end of the Cold War and the subsequent new regional alignments, American foreign policy and influence in the Asia-Pacific region face a major turning point. In this book ten North American specialists from various disciplines reconceptualize the forces shaping the New Pacific Community: international politics as a by-product of peaceful cooperation; the changing role of the military; the political economy as a determinant of human rights; environmental and demographic issues; and culture as an evolutionary and dynamic phenomenon in the lives of new immigrants as they make their way in American society.
