Book Greenlanders Whales and Whaling

Download or read book Greenlanders Whales and Whaling written by Richard A. Caulfield and published by Dartmouth College Press. This book was released on 2000-09-26 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whaling has been central to the life of Greenland's Inuit peoples for at least 4000 years, but political, economic, technological, and regulatory changes have altered this ancient practice. Richard A. Caulfield reveals these impacts first by analyzing Home Rule and its success in Greenland, and then by looking at whaling's place in the contemporary Greenlandic economy and its evolving co-management regime. What emerges from his investigation is an intricate web connecting traditions of indigenous peoples, the promises and pitfalls of co-management, the influence of international whaling policies, the complexities of sustainability, and the power of culturally determined views shaping relationships between humans and their environment. Caulfield finds that controversy over whaling often arises from conflicting idea systems, rather than disagreement over biological resource management. Understanding the ways Greenlanders and outside interests have defined and negotiated these conflicts "gives us more than just an insight into how indigenous peoples are coping with a changing world," he writes. "It also provides us with a sense of the challenges we face as well."

Download or read book Whaling and International Law written by Malgosia Fitzmaurice and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-03 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whales are regarded as a totemic symbol by some nations and as a natural marine resource by others. This book presents a complex picture of legal problems surrounding the interpretation of the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling and the role of its regulatory body, the International Whaling Commission. Contemporary whaling is about the competing interests of whaling nations (which are in the minority), non-whaling nations (which are in the majority) and indigenous peoples. Whales are covered by many international conventions, which has led to a very fragmented legal situation and does not necessarily ensure that whales are protected. This is one of the paradoxes of the contemporary international legal regime which are explored in this book. The book also examines the contentious issue of the right of indigenous peoples to whaling and questions whether indigenous whaling is very different from commercial practices.

Book Whaling on Martha s Vineyard

Download or read book Whaling on Martha s Vineyard written by Thomas Dresser and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2018 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Martha's Vineyard became an integral part of the whaling industry at the beginning of the eighteenth century and inspired a lasting romantic enthusiasm for life on the open ocean. From shorewhaling to daring voyages into the Atlantic, Pacific and Arctic Oceans, the insular whaling community offered a tempting path for many young Vineyarders to rise from cabin boy to captain. Local businesses were enticed by the potential profit from whaling voyages, and many reaped generous rewards from successful whale oil harvests. Through memoirs, music and memorabilia, author Thomas Dresser recounts this dramatic history of the bygone era of whaling on Martha's Vineyard.

Download or read book Whaling in Maine written by Charles H. Lagerbom and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2020-06-29 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of American whaling is most frequently associated with Nantucket, New Bedford and Mystic. However, the state of Maine also played an integral part in the development and success of this important industry. The sons of Maine became whaling captains, whaling crews, inventors, investors and businessmen. Towns along the coast created community-wide whaling and sealing ventures, outfitted their own ships and crewed them with their own people. The state also supplied the growing industry with Maine-built ships, whale boats, oars and other maritime supplies. For more than two hundred years, the state forged a strong and lasting connection with the American whaling industry. Author and historian Charles Lagerbom reveals why Maine should rightly take its place alongside its more well-known New England whaling neighbors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like most of us, William Hagelund sees whales through compassion-ate eyes now, and marvels at the boom times of BC's whaling industry when he and a host of legendary old harpooners hunted down the great sperm and humpback herds off Vancouver Island without a trace of remorse. But those barnacled old mariners, whether they be seen as heroes or villains, were fascinated students of their prey and their story brings one close to the world of the great cetaceans. Whalers No More, the history of the west coast whaling industry, is an epic chapter in the history of whales and men, and Hagelund relates it in a warm and personal manner. The colourful and fascinating text is illustrated with photos and maps.

Book Twentieth Century Shore Station Whaling in Newfoundland and Labrador

This book was released on 2005-04-28 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern shore-station whaling on Canada's eastern shores developed with the spread of Norwegian-dominated whaling from local areas where stocks that had been depleted by new hunting technologies to more productive locations in the North Atlantic and elsewhere. Twentieth-Century Shore-Station Whaling in Newfoundland and Labrador adds to a growing number of regionally specific case studies that collectively illustrate the complex nature of the history of global whaling. Dickinson and Sanger further demonstrate how participants in the industry were instrumental in developing other whaling initiatives, including those in British Columbia.
