Book excerpt: Every summer the population of college-age kids explodes in Southern California. Some come for opportunities on movie lots and recording studios. Others migrate for summer jobs at Disneyland or Knott's Berry Farm. A few are simply on vacation. Most arrive in the chaotic land of tinsel, fruits, and nuts to hit the beaches and party. Fraternity brothers Robert, Kevin, and Benjamin return to Disneyland for a second summer. Working at Carnation Plaza Gardens, friendships are made with Tammy, a grunion hunter and powder skier from Utah, Dave, a volleyball player and mountain climber from Kansas, and Jed Bob, a rockabilly guitarist and "slap-back" bass player from Texas. Extracurricular activities include beer drinking at the French Quarter in Anaheim, bodysurfing at "The Wedge" in Newport Beach, and side trips to Tijuana, Catalina, and Hollywood. Most of the kids pack light, but a few make room for heavy baggage, including their own demons of obsession, deception, and manipulation. Aston, a former First Lady Astronaut Trainee in Albuquerque, is one of the young people with lots of baggage, including a working "hit list" of six names. She along with her best friend Leslie, an Eastern Airlines stewardess and American River whitewater guide, run into Robert, Kevin, and Benjamin at lunch in Big Sur. They meet again at Disneyland, where the girls are taking a break from surfing the pilings at the pier in Huntington Beach. During their time together, there is no mention of Aston's list or the name at the top of the list----President of the United States John F. Kennedy.

Book West of the Revolution An Uncommon History of 1776

Download or read book West of the Revolution An Uncommon History of 1776 written by Claudio Saunt and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2014-06-16 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This panoramic account of 1776 chronicles the other revolutions unfolding that year across North America, far beyond the British colonies. In this unique history of 1776, Claudio Saunt looks beyond the familiar story of the thirteen colonies to explore the many other revolutions roiling the turbulent American continent. In that fateful year, the Spanish landed in San Francisco, the Russians pushed into Alaska to hunt valuable sea otters, and the Sioux discovered the Black Hills. Hailed by critics for challenging our conventional view of the birth of America, West of the Revolution “[coaxes] our vision away from the Atlantic seaboard” and “exposes a continent seething with peoples and purposes beyond Minutemen and Redcoats” (Wall Street Journal).

Book Dudeville

    Book Details:
  • Author : J.D. Kleinke
  • Publisher : Belgrave House
  • Release : 2017-11-13
  • ISBN : 194781222X

Download or read book Dudeville written by J.D. Kleinke and published by Belgrave House. This book was released on 2017-11-13 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imagine Huck Finn "lighting out for the territories" 150 years later, this time as a late-30s corporate dropout turned backcountry snowboarder and mountain climber. Dudeville is a coming-of-middle-age adventure story, set in and all around small-town Colorado during the outdoor sports explosion of the 1990s. Inspired by a wide and wild range of influences -- from Thoreau, Whitman, Muir and Twain, to Jack Kerouac, Edward Abbey and Warren Miller -- Dudeville is equal parts extreme sports tale, male bonding romp, and reluctant love story, a sensuous, lyrical, exuberant exploration of the American West. Dudeville's author, J.D. Kleinke, was a serious health care guy in Baltimore until he discovered snowboarding, hang gliding, jam bands, and the raw spiritual power of life above treeline . . . and moved to Colorado. He is the author of three books about medicine in America, including Catching Babies, a novel about the culture of maternity care and childbirth. He has also been involved in the formation, management, and governance of several health care companies and non-profit organizations. His work has appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and dozens of medical and business publications. He lives with his wife in Half Moon Bay, California, and Portland, Oregon. From Dudeville: "From this summit, the horizon seesaws open into an electric blue dream of Colorado sky. The adolescent swagger and brawn of the Rockies is nothing like the stooped and rounded hills back east. Spiked with mammoth formations of rock and ice, this vast, continental cacophony is the very roof of the world, pushed skyward by geologic time while collapsing under its own weight. I drop in, and surf off the wind-scoured edge, working the margin between transcendent bliss and utter catastrophe, a controlled fury exploding from my core into arcing snowboard turns as I crisscross the fall-line and dissolve into gravity..."
