Book excerpt: West Deptford Township was officially incorporated on March 1, 1871, when it was separated from the much larger Deptford Township. Pioneers, drawn by fertile land and proximity to waterways and major cities, discovered that this small acreage of land was perfect for farming. These family farms grew into small family-owned businesses, attracting others wishing to begin homesteads and other companies. As time went on, clusters of family farms were transformed into small communities. Neighborhoods such as Verga, Colonial Manor, Thorofare, and Greenfields emerged. Today, West Deptford, a prideful community, is a blend of the old and new. Old family farmhouses stand proudly next to new developments. West Deptford features images and stories from many township residents.

Book excerpt: Located just outside Philadelphia, Deptford Township has progressed from a sleepy agricultural community to an important Gloucester County town in the last century. Known mainly for its pig farms and ice production in its early days, Deptford remained rural until after World War II, when residential building exploded and local malls, movie theaters, restaurants, and other commercial development put the community on the map. Deptford Township explores this area's history with tales of Revolutionary War scout and hero Jonas Cattell, who was born and buried in Deptford, and the Clement Oak, under which the Lenni Lenape held council meetings. Locally, the logo of a hot-air balloon celebrates North America's first aerial flight, which took place in 1793, when Jean Pierre Blanchard traveled fifteen miles from Philadelphia to land forty-six minutes later in a clearing on Clements Bridge Road. Also included are images of Deptford Day and the notorious honey hunt, a fundraiser held for the Almonesson fire department in the 1930s and 1940s.

Book excerpt: From the bestselling author of The Ascent of Money and The Square and the Tower “A dazzling history of Western ideas.” —The Economist “Mr. Ferguson tells his story with characteristic verve and an eye for the felicitous phrase.” —Wall Street Journal “[W]ritten with vitality and verve . . . a tour de force.” —Boston Globe Western civilization’s rise to global dominance is the single most important historical phenomenon of the past five centuries. How did the West overtake its Eastern rivals? And has the zenith of Western power now passed? Acclaimed historian Niall Ferguson argues that beginning in the fifteenth century, the West developed six powerful new concepts, or “killer applications”—competition, science, the rule of law, modern medicine, consumerism, and the work ethic—that the Rest lacked, allowing it to surge past all other competitors. Yet now, Ferguson shows how the Rest have downloaded the killer apps the West once monopolized, while the West has literally lost faith in itself. Chronicling the rise and fall of empires alongside clashes (and fusions) of civilizations, Civilization: The West and the Rest recasts world history with force and wit. Boldly argued and teeming with memorable characters, this is Ferguson at his very best.

Book excerpt: Avoid cheap photocopies that are difficult to read and have poor image quality! FamLoc is the only publisher to properly republish local history books. "History of Deptford" covers the old Parish of Deptford, which included New Cross and part of Brockley. Originally published in 1884, this FamLoc edition has made changes to format and punctuation, but the prose has been faithfully retained, other than changes to a handful of typographical errors and the very few instances where clarity was required. Deptford is steeped in history, and this new edition of Dews' "History of Deptford" is invaluable for family historians, local historians, as well as those with Deptford connections who wish to know more about the town and its surrounding area.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Told alternately, by Colleen, an idealistic young white teacher; Frank, a black high school football player; and Evelyn, an experienced black teacher, Freedom Lessons is the story of how the lives of these three very different people intersect in a rural Louisiana town in 1969. Colleen enters into the culture of the rural Louisiana town with little knowledge of the customs and practices. She is compelled to take sides after the school is integrated—an overnight event for which the town’s residents are unprepared, and which leads to confusion and anxiety in the community—and her values are tested as she seeks to understand her black colleagues, particularly Evelyn. Why doesn’t she want to integrate the public schools? Frank, meanwhile, is determined to protect his mother and siblings after his father’s suspicious death—which means keeping a secret from everyone around him. Based on the author’s experience teaching in Louisiana in the late sixties, this heartfelt, unflinching novel about the unexpected effects of school integration during that time takes on the issues our nation currently faces regarding race, unity, and identity.
