Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The West Coast region is made up of three states, California, Oregon, and Washington, well-known for their natural beauty. Their coastal location invited early settlement, and the region’s natural wonders are arguably matched by its many manmade ones. The Golden Gate Bridge and the streetcars rolling up and down the hills of San Francisco evoke times past, and the Space Needle in Washington is a testimony to human ingenuity. With a true mix of cultures brought to the area by enormous opportunities there, the West Coast has many large cities and a thriving economy. Yet the people in the region value the outdoors and spend time swimming, surfing, biking, hiking, and skiing. Readers will gain a comprehensive view of the region and how geographic features shape human settlement and culture.

Book Sea Level Rise for the Coasts of California Oregon and Washington

Download or read book Sea Level Rise for the Coasts of California Oregon and Washington written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tide gauges show that global sea level has risen about 7 inches during the 20th century, and recent satellite data show that the rate of sea-level rise is accelerating. As Earth warms, sea levels are rising mainly because ocean water expands as it warms; and water from melting glaciers and ice sheets is flowing into the ocean. Sea-level rise poses enormous risks to the valuable infrastructure, development, and wetlands that line much of the 1,600 mile shoreline of California, Oregon, and Washington. As those states seek to incorporate projections of sea-level rise into coastal planning, they asked the National Research Council to make independent projections of sea-level rise along their coasts for the years 2030, 2050, and 2100, taking into account regional factors that affect sea level. Sea-Level Rise for the Coasts of California, Oregon, and Washington: Past, Present, and Future explains that sea level along the U.S. west coast is affected by a number of factors. These include: climate patterns such as the El Niño, effects from the melting of modern and ancient ice sheets, and geologic processes, such as plate tectonics. Regional projections for California, Oregon, and Washington show a sharp distinction at Cape Mendocino in northern California. South of that point, sea-level rise is expected to be very close to global projections. However, projections are lower north of Cape Mendocino because the land is being pushed upward as the ocean plate moves under the continental plate along the Cascadia Subduction Zone. However, an earthquake magnitude 8 or larger, which occurs in the region every few hundred to 1,000 years, would cause the land to drop and sea level to suddenly rise.

Book West Coast Wild

Download or read book West Coast Wild written by Deborah Hodge and published by West Coast Wild. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This stunning nature alphabet book explores the fascinating ecosystem of the Pacific West Coast -- a magnificent area that combines an ancient rainforest, a rugged beach and a vast, open ocean, and where whales, bears, wolves, eagles and a rich variety of marine species thrive in an interconnected web of life. Author Deborah Hodge has spent more than forty years on the west coast, frequently visiting the Pacific Rim region, and she knows it intimately. From A to Z she describes in vivid language the rainforest, ocean and beach, and a great variety of animals that a child might see walking along the shore -- from tiny sea jellies to inquisitive sandpipers to leaping orcas. Illustrator Karen Reczuch brings her remarkable talent to the book, and has created image after image that is simply breathtaking. The text and art have been carefully checked for scientific accuracy. The book also includes a note about the Pacific West Coast and suggestions for exploring the region and further reading.

Book Nature and Science on the Pacific Coast

Download or read book Nature and Science on the Pacific Coast written by American Association for the Advancement of Science. Pacific Coast Committee and published by . This book was released on 1915 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Pacific Coast region of the United States contains many distinctive natural features and much unique material for scientific research. Many of the problems presented here are peculiar to the West, but in their larger aspects they have a significant bearing upon fundamental questions of world-wide concern both in the field of natural science and in the relation of these problems to the affairs of men. However interesting western materials may be, the traveler wishing to know of them has little time for study, and sources of information which might be used are frequently scattered and inaccessible. Recognizing the need for ready information on nature and science in the West, the Pacific Coast Committee of the American Association for the Advancement of Science has considered it desirable in this year of the two expositions celebrating the opening of the Panama Canal to bring together in hand-book form concise data upon matters of general interest for the use of travelers in this region. A special committee was appointed to assemble the material and to enlist the assistance of men well informed upon the subjects to be discussed. The descriptions contained in this book have been prepared with care by specialists, and the volume is addressed to all travelers in the West who wish to know the significant features of the land through which they pass."-- c taken from Introductory Note, page v.
