Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Frontier in American History In republishing these essays in collected form, it has seemed best to issue them as they were originally printed, with the exception of few slight corrections of slips in the text and with the omission of occasional duplication of language in the different essays. A considerable part of whatever value they may posses arises from the fact that they are commentaries in different periods on the central theme of the influence of the frontier in American history. Consequently they may have some historical significance as contemporaneous attempts of a student of American history, at successive transitions in our development during the past quarter century to interpret the relations of the present to the past. Grateful acknowledgement is made to the various societies and periodicals which have given permission to reprint the essays. Various essays dealing with the connection of diplomatic history and the frontier and others stressing the significance of the section, or geographic province, in American history, are not included in the present collection. Neither the French nor the Spanish frontier is within the scope of the volume. The future alone can disclose how far these interpretations are correct for the age of colonization of the frontier and free land. Download or read book The Last American Frontier Classic Reprint written by Frederic Logan Paxson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Last American Frontier I Have told here the story of the last frontier within the United States, trying at once to preserve the picturesque atmosphere which has given to the "Far West" a definite and well-understood meaning, and to indicate those forces which have shaped the history of the country beyond the Mississippi. In doing it I have had to rely largely upon my own investigations among sources little used and relatively inaccessible. The exact citations of authority, with which I might have crowded my pages, would have been out of place in a book not primarily intended for the use of scholars. But I hope, before many years, to exploit in a larger and more elaborate form the mass of detailed information upon which this sketch is based. My greatest debts are to the owners of the originals from which the illustrations for this book have been made; to Claude H. Van Tyne, who has repeatedly aided me with his friendly criticism; and to my wife, whose careful readings have saved me from many blunders in my text. This book was released on 2018-02-25 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Way to the West, and the Lives of Three Early Americans Boone Crockett Carson The customary method in writing history is to rely on chronological sequence as the only con meeting thread in the narrative. For this reason many books of history are but little more than loosely bound masses of dates and events that bear no philosophical connection with one another, and therefore are not easily retained in the grasp of the average mind. History, to be of service, must be remembered. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Plain Story of American History Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Plain Story of American History Classic Reprint written by John Spencer Bassett and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Plain Story of American History MY purpose in writing this book is expressed in the title. I wish that it may be a plain story of the achievement of human beings in that part of the Western Hemisphere which is now the United States of America. To relate the main facts clearly and broadly, rather than to describe many detailed occurrences, has been constantly in my mind. The story here presented may be taken as an introduc tion for a wider study of our history. It has been my aim to use simple but strong language, and to place the emphasis of the book on human actions. But much attention has been given to social history, and in two chapters the outlines of American government have been presented. I hope the book will prove neither hard nor easy for pupils. If it is received as a straightforward story, drawing forth the earnest efforts of capable pupils and making for the suc cess of faithful teachers, it will be a source of pleasure for the author, repaying him for many days and nights of careful study of our national history. More especially, I wish that the book may serve, along with many other excellent works of similar scope, to give to the American youth a better appreciation of the glorious history of their native land, and to create in them a warmer purpose to serve their country and promote its progress. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Heart of the West: An American Story Partisanship and Sectionalism are now with us the monsters that stand in the way of truth, and, for a time at least, the walls and thorny hedges that divide parties should be cleared away, and the great field of truth laid open for full and just examination. Old errors should be fully understood and admitted, in order that present errors may be abated; and this should be done in a spirit of lofty candor, and a sacred regard for truth in every point of political history. Starting with the known and incontro vertible facts, the unknown deeps of error may be sounded if not explored, and their secrets revealed, and the super ficial bombast of mere partisan literature give place to the clear light of that accurate and faithful history which alone is valuable as a guide; that lamp of experience that may guide our feet, and whose light is always truly te flected and increased by Revelation. This book was released on 2017-05-23 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Changing West, and Other Essays I trust that Professor Larson will permit me to add that his friends and associates desired to bring out this book in honor of his election to the vice presidency, and his forth coming elevation to the presidency, of the American His torical Association. When, about a year and a half ago, I ventured to suggest to him the idea of bringing together in book form some of his essays, I was well aware of the fact that his previously published works were mainly in the field of English and early Norse history, but I also knew of his deep interest in the story of the Norwegians in America, and I expressed the hope that he would focus his attention Upon that subject. He took kindly to the suggestion and the result is the present volume. The norwegian-american Historical Association feels honored in being permitted to sponsor the book, and in doing so it offers its congratula tions to Professor Larson not only upon the high distinction that has come to'him at the hands of the national historical organization but also upon the many and important con tributions that he has made to American historiography. Book American Antiquities and Discoveries in the West Classic Reprint

Download or read book American Antiquities and Discoveries in the West Classic Reprint written by Josiah Priest and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Antiquities and Discoveries in the West Although the subject of the Antiquities of America is every where surrounded with its mysteries; on which account, we have been compelled to wander widely in the field of conjecture, from which it is not impossible but we may have gathered and presented some original and novel opinions. We have felt that we are bound by the nature of the subject, to treat wholly on those matters which relate to ages preceding the discovery of America by Columbus; as we apprehend that no subject connected with the history of the continent since, can be entitled to the appellation of Antiquities of America. If we may be permitted to judge from the liberal subscription this work has met with, notwithstanding the universal prejudice against subscribing for books, we should draw the conclusion, that this curious subject, has not its only admirers within the pales of antiquarian Societies, which are composed of the wealthiest and most talented men of the age. If it is pleasing as well as useful to know the history of one's country, if to feel a rising interest as its beginnings are unfolded-its sufferings-its wars-its struggles-and its victories delineated-why not also, when the story of its antiquities, though of a graver and more majestic nature, are attempted to be rehearsed? The traits of the ancient nations of the old world are every where shown by the fragments of dilapidated cities, pyramids of stone, and walls of wondrous length; but here are the wrecks of empire, whose beginnings it would seem, are older than any of these, which are the mounds and works of the west, towering aloft as if their builders were preparing against another flood. We have undertaken to elicit arguments, from what we suppose evidence, that me first inhabitants who peopled America, came on by land, at certain places, where it is supposed once to have been united with Asia, Europe, and Africa, but has been torn asunder by the force of earthquakes, and the Irruptions of the waters, so that what animals had not passed over before this great physical rupture, were forever excluded; but not so with men, as they could resort to the use of boats. Book Rise of the New West 1819 1829 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rise of the New West 1819-1829 In a way the west is simply a broader east, for up to the end of the period covered by this volume most of the grown men and women in the west came across the mountains to found new homes the new-englander in western New York; the Penn sylvanian diverging westward and southwestward; the Virginian in Kentucky; the north-carolinian in Tennessee and Missouri and, along with the South Carolinian and Georgian, in the new southwestern states; while north of the Ohio River the principal element up to 1830 was southern. To describe such a movement and its effects, Pro fessor Turner has the advantage to be a descendant Of new-yorkers, of New England stock, but native to the west, and living alongside the most complete collection of materials upon the west which has ever been brought together - the Library of the Wisconsin State Historical Society. His point of View is that the west and east were always interdependent, and that the rising power of the western states in na tional affairs was a wholesome and natural outcome of forces at work for half a century. The trans formation of the west from a rude and boisterous frontier to a group of states, soon rivalling their parent communities in population and wealth, was not unlike the process through which Massachusetts and Pennsylvania and Virginia passed as colonies, except that the inland people accepted Ideals and standards originally English, but worked out and put into shape by their colonist fathers. Neither the French nor the Spanish frontier is within the scope of the volume. The future alone can disclose how far these interpretations are correct for the age of colonization which came gradually to an end with the disappearance of the frontier and free land. It alone can reveal how much of the courageous, creative American spirit, and how large a part of the historic American ideals are to be carried over into that new age which is replacing the era of free lands and of measurable isolation by consolidated and complex industrial development and by increasing resemblances and connections between the New World and the Old. But the larger part of what has been distinctive and valuable in America's contribution to the history of the human spirit has been due to this nation's peculiar experience in extending its type of frontier into new regions; and in creating peaceful societies with new ideals in the successive vast and differing geographic provinces which together make up the United States. Directly or indirectly these experiences shaped the life of the Eastern as well as the Western States, and even reacted upon the Old World and influenced the direction of its thought and its progress. This experience has been fundamental in the economic, political and social characteristics of the American people and in their conceptions of their destiny. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American History Through Historical NovelsThe exciting pages of American history have not always seemed as exciting or as colorful in history textbooks as they have in the hundreds of historical novels which have been writ ten by many of America's best writers. The facts stand out clearly in the best histories and they are often illuminated by the comments and interpretations of the historians; but the historical novel makes learning easy and provides considerable entertainment at the same time.In the conclusion to his book, The Historical N ovel in America, Professor Ernest E. Leisy of Southern Methodist University says: Historical novels have interpreted many phases of the national history. On their broad canvas have been displayed the contests with the aborigines for the possession of a conti nent, the conflict with the mother country for independence, the onward push to Western frontiers, the strife between North and South, and the final occupation of all the land. NO other literary form has more acceptably expressed for the majority of readers the nation's origins, its development, its ideals, and its meaning.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
