Book excerpt: This book explores the life and ministry of John Wesley from the perspective of Murray Bowen's Extended Family Systems Theory and to a lesser extent from Alfred Adler's concept of family constellation. Throughout the book, the author uses concepts drawn from these theories to explore significant historical and pivotal events in the life of John Wesley. Beginning with family events prior to his birth, the author also explores his early family constellation, influential themes, factors shaping his ministry, and various relational issues, including his relationships with Sophy Hopkey, Grace Murray, and his marriage to Mary Vazeille. It concludes by drawing lessons from Wesley's life pertinent to today's ministers.

  • ISBN : 0826415121
  • Pages : 160 pages

Download or read book John Wesley written by Ralph Waller and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2003-05-08 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: May 2003 is the 300th anniversary of the birth of John Wesley. This is a beautifully written biography intended for a general audience. While not at all hagiographical, the book leads one to admire Wesley immensely. He traveled throughout the British Isles more than anyone in history. Reviled early on during his plein air evangelical crusades, he became deeply loved in old age by all sectors of the population. While the book has a slightly British cast to it (which is unavoidable given the extent of Wesley's travels throughout Britain), it gives adequate coverage to his period in the American colonies.

Book Susanna Wesley

    Book Details:
  • Author : Susanna Wesley
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 1997-06-26
  • ISBN : 0199879451
  • Pages : 529 pages

Download or read book Susanna Wesley written by Susanna Wesley and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1997-06-26 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Susanna Wesley, long celebrated in Methodist mythology as mother of the movement's founders, now takes place as a practical theologian in her own right. This collection of her letters, spiritual diary, and longer treatises (only one of which was published in her lifetime) shows her to be more than the nurturing mother of Wesleyan legend. It also reveals her to be a well-educated woman in conversation with contemporary theological, philosophical, and literary works. Her quotations and allusions include Locke, Pascal, and Herbert, as well as a number of now forgotten theologians. In some of her work, one can distinguish doctrinal and spiritual leanings, such as Arminianism and Christian perfection, that would later find wide expression in the spread of Methodism. Further, her writings demonstrate her readiness, for conscience's sake, to stand up to the men in her life--father, husband, and sons---and the three incarnations of English Protestantism they represented: respectively, Puritanism, the Established Church, and the new Methodist movement. Tracing these incidents in her letters and diaries, a reader can begin to understand how spirituality, even an otherwise conservative one in rather restrictive times, can serve to empower the voice of women.

Book Samuel Wesley and the Crisis of Tory Piety 1685 1720

Download or read book Samuel Wesley and the Crisis of Tory Piety 1685 1720 written by William Gibson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-02-25 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Samuel Wesley and the Crisis of Tory Piety, 1685-1720 uses the experiences of Samuel Wesley (1662-1735) to examine what life was like in the Church of England for Tory High Church clergy. These clergy felt alienated from the religious and political settlement of 1689 and found themselves facing the growth of religious toleration. They often linked this to a rise in immorality and a sense of the decline in religious values. Samuel Wesley's life saw a series of crises including his decision to leave Dissent and conform to the Church of England, his imprisonment for debt in 1705, his shortcomings as a priest, disagreements with his bishop, his marriage breakdown and the haunting of his rectory by a ghost or poltergeist. Wesley was also a leading member of the Convocation of the Church during the crisis years of 1710-14. In each of these episodes, Wesley's Toryism and High Church principles played a key role in his actions. They also show that the years between 1685 and 1720 were part of a 'long Glorious Revolution' which was not confined to 1688-9. This 'long Revolution' was experienced by Tory High Church clergy as a series of turning points in which the Whig forces strengthened their control of politics and the Church. Using newly discovered sources, and providing fresh insights into the life and work of Samuel Wesley, William Gibson explores the world of the Tory High Church clergy in the period 1685-1720.

Book A Biographical History of the Wesley Family

Download or read book A Biographical History of the Wesley Family written by John Dove and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Biographical History of the Wesley Family: More Particularly Its Earlier Branches The eventful and important Life of the venerable Founder of Arminian Methodism has been frequently laid before the Public; but there is reason to believe that the history of his Paternal and Maternal Ancestors is only partially known, even amongst the members of the Methodist Society. The late Dr. Adam Clarke, published in 1822, "Memoirs of the Wesley Family" in a large octavo volume, but which, on account of the introduction of a vast quantity of extraneous and unnecessary matter, is not well adapted for general circulation. The Price also prevented many from purchasing it. On these grounds the Compiler of the following Work is of opinion, that a condensed, and well arranged Memoir of the Wesley Family, at a moderate price, and written "with special reference to general readers," was still wanting.
