Book Werner Schuster

Download or read book Werner Schuster written by René Harather and published by Hirmer Verlag GmbH. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Werner Schuster was a doctor long before he became an artist--but it was a childhood fascination with photography that drove him to study radiology in the first place, so it's only fitting that he should now be one of the most versatile and interesting artists working with x-ray photography today. This volume presents full-color reproductions of Schuster's photographs along with those of other photographers, from the pioneering x-ray creators of 1895 to present-day artists working in the medium. An essay by René Harather tells the history of x-ray photography and highlights the most important developments and proponents of the genre since its discovery. The second part of the book turns to Schuster's work, showing how he has expanded the boundaries of the medium and made creative use of the interplay between traditional and x-ray photography. A fascinating look at a stunning marriage of art and science, X-Ray is the first comprehensive representation of the history of x-ray photography.

Book Large scale dam removal and ecosystem restoration

Download or read book Large scale dam removal and ecosystem restoration written by Rebecca McCaffery and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-09-20 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rivers are vital ecosystems that support aquatic and terrestrial biodiversity and several ecosystem services, including food, water, culture, and recreation. After centuries of building dams on rivers across the world, dam removal projects are now on the rise due to obsolescence, reservoir sedimentation, insufficient return on investment, or river restoration and conservation priorities. Most dam removal projects have focused on smaller structures (< 10 m in structural height), but larger structures have also started to be removed in increasing numbers as practitioners, river managers, conservationists, and the public have gained more experience with the practice. Recent estimates suggest that only a small fraction of dam removals have been scientifically studied, and include mostly small dams and short time scales. Documenting the long-term ecological outcomes of large dam removal (i.e. >10 m tall) represents a new frontier in dam removal research: projects are more recent and provide an opportunity to understand the complex ecological changes that occur with these transformative restoration projects. Here, we aim to collate a diverse array of papers on long-term dam removal research projects involving larger dams (>10 m) to synthesize the issues, outcomes, tools, and experimental designs used to study large dam removal projects from physical, biological, and ecological perspectives. With this collection, we aim to showcase diverse global projects on ecosystem responses to large dam removal; collect perspectives from different disciplines, fields, and geographies; and synthesize the current state of knowledge in this area. We expect that this Research Topic will be informative to ongoing, long-term ecological restoration and monitoring projects related to dam removal as well as to upcoming large dam removal projects. We welcome contributions from all disciplines addressing the physical, ecological, and ecosystem responses to large-scale dam removal. Contributions could include original research in a specific discipline or area, case studies, or synthesis papers that address one or more of these topics in a transdisciplinary approach. Contributors could address any of the following major topics as related to outcomes of large dam removal, alone or in combination: Freshwater, estuarine, and marine aquatic biota; River and reservoir geomorphology; Terrestrial and riparian vegetation; Wildlife; Sedimentation; and Modelling. We would like contributors to highlight key results in their area of study, cross-disciplinary insights, and lessons learned that could inform ongoing monitoring and research efforts in current projects as well as upcoming large dam removals.

Book The No Salt Lowest Sodium International Cookbook

Download or read book The No Salt Lowest Sodium International Cookbook written by Donald A. Gazzaniga and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2007-11-13 with total page 672 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a serious heart problem caused Don Gazzaniga to give up his career in communications, he was warned to keep to a diet with very little salt or other sodium. Undaunted, he discovered a way to continue enjoying the meals he loved and still keep his sodium level far below what most cardiologists feel they can expect from their patients. The idea has led to three published books found on the kitchen shelves of thousands of grateful families dealing with congestive heart failure. First came a large general cookbook. It was followed by a baking book, and then a book of recipes for light meals and snacks. What could be next? Before Don's illness, he and his wife, Maureen, traveled a lot. Don's job took him all over the globe. And wherever they went, they sought out that country's traditional dishes. When the light-meals book was finished, Don was looking for yet another low-sodium cookbook idea. He and Maureen pulled out their collection of recipes, did their magic of making them very low on sodium, and voilà! The No-Salt, Losest-Sodium International Cookbook is a delicious and healthy treat for the entire family.

Book Grand Canyon to Hearst Ranch

Download or read book Grand Canyon to Hearst Ranch written by Elizabeth Austin and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-02-21 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finalist for the 2020 WILLA Literary Award, Creative Nonfiction Inspired by her first breathtaking trip in the Grand Canyon, Harriet Hunt Burgess dedicated her life to saving land for future generations. Beginning in the 1970s, she persevered through four decades—overcoming daunting obstacles and taking extraordinary risks—to conserve hundreds of thousands of acres of land in the American West.Without Burgess, iconic and irreplaceable landscapes like the Lake Tahoe region and the California coast would be much different today. As Harriet Burgess once explained, “The land we save is our legacy. It’s what we give to our children.” The Grand Canyon was the catalyst for Harriet’s conservation mission and the spark for Grand Canyon to Hearst Ranch. Author Elizabeth Austin has interwoven her own exhilarating and life-changing dory trip through the depths of the Grand Canyon with the compelling story of Harriet’s early life and five of her most significant conservation achievements as founder-president of the American Land Conservancy.
