Download or read book Moving Beyond Words written by Gloria Steinem and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2012-05-15 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essays from the New York Times–bestselling author who inspired the film The Glorias, a “woman who has told the truth about her life and ours” (Los Angeles Times). With cool humor and rich intellect, Gloria Steinem strips bare our social constructions of gender and race, explaining just how limiting these invented cultural identities can be. In the first of six sections, Steinem imagines how our understanding of human psychology would be different in a witty reversal: What if Freud had been a woman who inflicted biological inferiority on men (think “womb envy”)? In other essays, she presents positive examples of people who turn gendered stereotypes on their heads, from a female bodybuilder to Mahatma Gandhi, whose followers absorbed his wisdom that change starts at the bottom. And in some of the most moving pieces, Steinem reveals some of her own complicated history as a writer, woman, and citizen of the world. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Gloria Steinem including rare images from the author’s personal collection.

His totally unique and groundbreaking approach to losing weight is backed by solid, cutting edge obesity research from over four years of full-time investigation of the roles of biochemistry, neurobiology, quantum physics and human consciousness in weight-loss. The result is a method that defies "common sense wisdom" and yet achieves dramatic lasting benefits. Celebrity obesity survivors like Muhammad Ali's daughter Khaliah and Robin Moran, star of The Discovery Channel's show Super Obese, are strong advocates of Jon's Weightloss approach, which has also been featured on A Current Affairand Today/Tonightin Australia as well as on numerous radio shows and newspaper articles internationally. In addition to telling Jon's own story of his amazing transformation, the book reveals why diets don't work and explains a truly unique and revolutionary diet-free way to lose weight. It's based on the fact that your body has an internal logic that determines how fat or thin you will be at any given time. The way to lose weight is not to struggle or to force yourself to lose weight but to understand this internal logic and work with it so that your body wants to be thinner. When your body wants to be thinner, weightloss is inevitable and becomes automatic and effortless. You simply crave less food, you crave healthier foods, your metabolism speeds up and you become very efficient at burning fat, just like a naturally thin person. And that's the real transformation - to transform yourself into a naturally thin person, so that you can eat whatever you want whenever you want and still be thin, fit and vibrantly healthy.

Book Speech and Song at the Margins of Global Health

Download or read book Speech and Song at the Margins of Global Health written by Steven P. Black and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2019-09-13 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Speech and Song at the Margins of Global Health tells the story of a unique Zulu gospel choir comprised of people living with HIV in South Africa, and how they maintained healthy, productive lives amid globalized inequality, international aid, and the stigma that often comes with having HIV. By singing, joking, and narrating about HIV in Zulu, the performers in the choir were able to engage with international audiences, connect with global health professionals, and also maintain traditional familial respect through the prism of performance. The focus on gospel singing in the narrative provides a holistic viewpoint on life with HIV in the later years of the pandemic, and the author’s musical engagement led to fieldwork in participants’ homes and communities, including the larger stigmatized community of infected individuals. This viewpoint suggests overlooked ways that aid recipients contribute to global health in support, counseling, and activism, as the performers set up instruments, waited around in hotel lobbies, and struck up conversations with passersby and audience members. The story of the choir reveals the complexity and inequities of global health interventions, but also the positive impact of those interventions in the crafting of community.

Book Privatization and the New Medical Pluralism

Download or read book Privatization and the New Medical Pluralism written by Anita Chary and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2015-09-17 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Privatization and the New Medical Pluralism is the first collection of its kind to explore the contemporary terrain of healthcare in Guatemala through reflective ethnography. This volume offers a nuanced portrait of the effects of healthcare privatization for indigenous Maya people, who have historically endured numerous disparities in health and healthcare access. The collection provides an updated understanding of medical pluralism, which concerns not only the tensions and exchanges between ethnomedicine and biomedicine that have historically shaped Maya people’s experiences of health, but also the multiple competing biomedical institutions that have emerged in a highly privatized, market-driven environment of care. The contributors examine the macro-structural and micro-level implications of the proliferation of non-governmental organizations, private fee-for-service clinics, and new pharmaceuticals against the backdrop of a deteriorating public health system. In this environment, health seekers encounter new challenges and opportunities, relationships between the public, private, and civil sectors transform, and new forms of inequality in access to healthcare abound. This volume connects these themes to critical studies of global and public health, exposing the strictures and apertures of healthcare privatization for marginalized populations in Guatemala.
