Book excerpt: When the author and his wife first met, life was a big blank canvas ready to be painted. After a trip down the aisle, the purchase of the first home together and the adoption of a dog to test the waters before wading into the pool of parenthood, life started to become more about to-do lists and conformity. Their big dreams together began to start with the phrase Someday we will With time no longer on their side, someday became today when they decided to leave everything behind and move 3,963 miles to London, England, to learn more about the world, themselves, their marriage, and what can happen when you find the courage to take a chance and do something great. On the surface, Wearing Wellies: A Year of Life & Love in London is the story of chasing lifelong dreams of queuing for Wimbledon tickets, greeting friends with kisses on both cheeks, close and personal encounters with the Queen, weekend trips to Paris, Italian cooking schools, and walks through the Cotswolds while wearing wellie boots with a dog named Sydney. But the story is really about life-changing relationships that the author and his wife make along the way with new friends who did not dress like them, sound like them, or think like them.

Book excerpt: Cat in Wellies is a pantomime script written in a way that any amateur dramatic society or group of friends can perform, whatever their age, size or skills level. No prior experience is needed in order to have fun, and if you have fun performing it, then any audience watching will have fun too. The pantomime is based on a French literary tale written at the close of the seventeenth century by Charles Perrault and commonly known as Puss in Boots. The original version of this well known story has several twists and the authors have added a few more in making sure that the cast list is flexible enough for a variable number of actors, although they remain faithful to the original French tale most of the time...

Book Elizabeth the Queen

Download or read book Elizabeth the Queen written by Sally Bedell Smith and published by Random House. This book was released on 2012-01-10 with total page 721 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • This “excellent, all-embracing” (The New York Times) biography of Queen Elizabeth II is a magisterial study of the woman known only from a distance—and a captivating window into her decades-long reign. From the moment of her ascension to the throne in 1952 at the age of twenty-five, Queen Elizabeth II was the object of unparalleled scrutiny. But through the fog of glamour and gossip, how well did we really know the world’s most famous monarch? Drawing on numerous interviews and never-before-revealed documents, acclaimed biographer Sally Bedell Smith pulls back the curtain to show in intimate detail the public and private lives of Queen Elizabeth II, who led her country and Commonwealth through the wars and upheavals of the last twentieth and twenty-first centuries with unparalleled composure, intelligence, and grace. In Elizabeth the Queen, we meet the young girl who suddenly becomes “heiress presumptive” when her uncle abdicates the throne. We meet the thirteen-year-old Lilibet as she falls in love with a young navy cadet named Philip and becomes determined to marry him, even though her parents prefer wealthier English aristocrats. We see the teenage Lilibet repairing army trucks during World War II and standing with Winston Churchill on the balcony of Buckingham Palace on V-E Day. We see the young Queen struggling to balance the demands of her job with her role as the mother of two young children. Sally Bedell Smith brings us inside the palace doors and into the Queen’s daily routines—the “red boxes” of documents she reviewed each day, the weekly meetings she had with twelve prime ministers, her physically demanding tours abroad, and the constant scrutiny of the press—as well as her personal relationships: with her husband, Prince Philip, the love of her life; her children and their often-disastrous marriages; her grandchildren and friends.

Book The Queen s English

  • Pages : 119 pages

Download or read book The Queen s English written by Christopher J. Moore and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2011-08-18 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From "chips" and "crumbs" to "spending a penny," The Queen's English is your indispensable guide to surviving and thriving in the tricky byways of the English language, which has shown many a poor soul the way out for little more than twanging a vowel, splitting an infinitive or, crime of all crimes, saying dinner instead of tea. With The Queen's English there's no need to become "flummoxed" ever again. This must-have A to Z guide uncovers the quintessential meanings behind more than 100 familiar words and phrases of the distinctively British lexicon, including: By hook or by crook (adv. phrase): It is good to find a phrase in common use that goes back as far as this one, and which appears (though not entirely proven) to link back to England's feudal past. In medieval times when the peasantry were not allowed to cut down trees, they were permitted nonetheless to gather firewood from loose or dead branches which could be obtained using "hook" (bill hook, a traditional cutting tool) or "crook," a staff with a curved end. No doubt the desperate peasant often exceeded the strict use of these tools, and so the sense is to achieve something by whatever means possible. The first recorded use of the phrase is from the fourteenth century. Gazump (vt.): Usually so proud of their reputation for playing fair, the English have a curious blind spot when it comes to buying and selling houses. To "gazump" is to raise the price of a piece of real estate after the sale has been agreed but before the contract is signed, usually on the pretext that the owner has received a higher offer elsewhere. The original buyer is then forced to raise their offer or the property goes to the higher bidder. This unethical but not illegal practice appeared first with the spelling "gazoomph" and was derived from an older and more general term "gazumph" (or gezumph) for the various kinds of swindling that go on at dishonest auctions. In a nutshell (adv. phrase): "Oh God, I could be bounded in a nutshell and count myself a King of infinite space..." cries Hamlet in Shakespeare's tragic play. But the meaning of the expression, namely, to put much into a small space, goes way back to classical times, to Pliny's Natural History where he writes: "Cicero records that a parchment copy of Homer's poem The Iliad was enclosed in a nutshell (in nuce)." In Shakespeare's own time, a Bible is said to have been produced that could fit into a nutshell, and that curiosity may have come to the playwright's notice. People like us (np.): Often abbreviated to PLU, this phrase is used by those of a certain social class to approve of others as acceptable by birth and station, and originates in the 1940s milieu typified by the artistic, wayward, and eccentric Mitford sisters, daughters of the second Baron Redesdale. We get a flavor of the attitude where Nancy Mitford, in a letter to her sister Jessica (August 28, 1957), declared that "People Like Us are never killed in earthquakes ...." Nancy refined the art of social class distinctions in her book Noblesse Oblige with a list of subtle differences in vocabulary first defined as U (upper class) and non-U (aspriring middle class) by the sociolinguist Alan Ross in 1954. So if you ever wanted to know what it means to be a "meat-and-potatoes man," a "lame duck," or to be in a "pretty pickle," stop "umming and erring" and read this fascinating collection "straightaway."

Book Just One More Time

Download or read book Just One More Time written by Jeffery Hayton and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2012-01-05 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just one more time is an account of life in late 20th century rural Britain. It is presented as a collage of poetry, describing ordinary, every day events and images in a thoughtful, occasionally thought provoking and often humorous way. It is biographic in layout, written in three parts, so the reader can catch his breath! Part One: As we grow. Describes images and events of baby as he develops into, first through childhood and then through his teenage years. Watching, copying and mimicking is what baby does best. Actual events begin to play more of a role through childhood, and interactions with others become more important to the teenager. Part Two: Before its too late. Reveals the attitude of the adult, always rushing to get things done! The young adult is enthusiastic, rebellious finding fault in many aspects of local and national government policy, which in his view is found wanting. Such as in his view towards the control of the individual, environmental pollution, statesmanship and seeming war mongering and mankinds inability to cope with helping the developing world and control the News power barons and bankers and financiers. The mature adult may continue on his various crusades, but mellows as he takes on the responsibility of raising a family, and sees that the way things are organized, still have their faults, but begins to accept the world for what it is. The older adult is free from family dependency, and develops a realistic if somewhat cynical view on life, but is opinionated amongst his peer group. Part Three: The older adult becomes elderly and more and more pre-occupied with preparations to pass into the next world, if it exists! Memories become more important than events and sometimes interactions. But dont take it too seriously, enjoy the poetry and keep smiling!

Book Cultures of the Countryside

Download or read book Cultures of the Countryside written by Veronica Sekules and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultures of the Countryside examines the relationship between the museum and the micro-cultures of the countryside. Offering an exploration of museums and heritage projects in the UK that have attempted to introduce new ways of engagement between localities, objects, and people, this book considers how museums, heritage initiatives, and art projects have dealt with pressing local and global socio-political issues relating to the environment and rural life, including changing demographics and rural practices, local environmental concerns, and global climate activism. Providing a thorough examination of the representation of competing histories, visions and politics, Sekules asks whether museums and heritage projects can engage actively in shaping cultures, as well as reflecting them. At the core of the analysis is an examination of the findings from a project in the UK’s East Anglia, ‘The Culture of the Countryside’, from which emerged themes closely bound to different countryside landscapes, peoples and heritage. Aimed at practitioners and students alike, Cultures of the Countryside provides a unique insight into the roles of the museum and heritage projects in rural and environmental issues in the recent past, whilst also offering perspectives and recommendations for the future.
